As announced in January, actor, stuntman and filmmaker Eric Jacobus is readying to launch the free online release of his 2006 martial arts comedy classic, Contour, beginning next month. The movie will premiere exclusively on Jacobus’s YouTube channel on April 19 at 7:00pm pacific standard time, with Jacobus joined by co-star Dennis Ruel in a live Q&A to celebrate the film’s twentieth anniversary since its 2004 production. Contour follows the small-time criminal Lawrence (Law) Young, who moonlights as a crotchety San Francisco tour guide. Ali Abbas Zafar is at the helm for the two-hander led by Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff. With their contrasting personalities and maverick methods, Bade Miyan and Chote Miyan need to overcome their differences and labor together to transport the offenders to impartiality and preserve the day. Queer protagonists are a rarity when it comes to certain genres, particularly regarding the kinds of films that sites like mine usually cover. I’ve even had conversations with mutuals about films like these over the years and some ideas they’ve had which sort of just sat on the shelf and were never fully realized. Monday was the official alert for Troma Entertainment Inc.’s latest production, The Power of Positive Murder!. Founding Troma exec and in-house creative Lloyd Kaufman is back in the director’s chair for the flick inspired by Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s “Crime and Punishment”. The heydays of Hong Kong cinema are no more. Instead, it is through physical media and receptive film festivals that the renowned genre will stand the test of time, recounting the surmounting efforts of directors capturing the industry’s envelope-pushing style of action and stunts, oftentimes to degrees that would never be accepted today. 1990 action thriller Fatal Termination is no exception, marking director Andrew Kam’s solo directorial outing after sharing the helm twice prior with The Enigmatic Case, and 1988’s The Big Heat. Reporters over at Variety did some good work in covering the fallout as well, and I kind of wonder if some long-term good could come from the film’s streaming release, even if at one point the director himself opined to the contrary in hopes of a theatrical opening. I wouldn’t have minded a big screen presentation myself. The seventh edition of the Overlook Film Festival is kicking off its four-day festivities on April 4. On Wednesday, the festival announced its full line-up of features and shortfilms, as well as immersive and live events. A previous version of the line-up was firstly announced earlier this month. The re-up now comes with late additions, including Nicolas Cage starrer Arcadian which arrives soon from RLJE Films, and Jang Jae-hyun’s new South Korean horror hit, Exhuma which hails in the states from Well Go USA. It also includes Saïd Belktibia’s Golshifteh Farahani starrer, Hood Witch which just screened for SXSW. Director and action stylist Kevin Le will soon have an audience to himself per this weekend’s festival screening of his newest short, Kings Of Triad: Uprising. The project is a prequel to a short Le and his team released last year dubbed Kings Of Triad with Le starring opposite Jae Phan (Battle B-Boy) in the story of a botched delivery that pits an up-and-coming gangster in a violent tête-à-tête against a young triad King and his soldiers.
