BUMILANGIT CINEMATIC UNIVERSE: Indonesia Is All-In With Volume One Of Its New Superhero Big Screen Franchise
It was on Sunday at Plaza Senyan in Jakarta that Screenplay Films and comic brand Bumilangit announced its official raft of superhero characters to be featured in the first volume of the Bumilangit Cinematic Universe. The announcement comes in the days leading up to the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of Joko Anwar’s new movie, Gundala, starring Abimanya Arysatya.
That film leads with its title character among a litany of heroes and villains whose stories will now be translated for their big screen in a whole series of film adaptations by several directors by 2025. These also include titles Sri Asih, Godam & Tira, Si Buta Dari Gua Hantu, Patriot Taruna, Gundala Putra Petir, Mandala Golok Setan, and Patriot.

It’s also worth noting that The Night Comes For Us helmer Timo Tjahjanto has been habitually teasing fans with any number of posts, otherwise showing interest in helming at least one of the titles, Si Buta Dari Gua Hantu (a.k.a. The Blind Man Of The Ghost Cave) going back noticeably more than a year ago.
Perhaps we’ll hear more on these efforts before long. It’s an ambitious film slate for a nation that’s been mired in typical regional industry politics and downturn before its steady climb into fruition close to a decade ago. After notable successes with titles like 212 Warrior, and cult success with Valentine and The Golden Cane Warrior, and with up-and-coming Satria Dewa Gatotkaca, perhaps there’s room along the pantheon for a new face on superhero lore next to Marvel and DC.

[…] An adaptation was also in the works officially back in 2019 as Bumilangit rolled out the red carpet for a star-studded event announcing its big screen line-up, with Joe Taslim tapped for the lead role and with Timo Tjahjanto as the directing hopeful; Variety’s report by Felicia Melody makes no mention of Taslim or Tjahjanto, although the film’s IMDb page – as of this post – has Tjahjanto credited as writer and co-director. I’ll be sure to update this article or future posts should that change. […]
