Revisiting Asami´s filmography, I came to the conclusion that Burnout Neo, must be one of her finest works, at least in terms of martial action, but also might be one of the most unknown and unfairly forgotten, which means that despairly needs to be reivindicated.
Produced by Zen Pictures, A movie company that produces every kind of different genres, from tokusatsus for kids and adults, to simply AV or action features like this one.We have a perfect action vehicle for Asami and Ayaka tanigaki, who teamed up as action heroines, playing, Misa and Lynn, two special agents from a special police unit known as “Garuda”, who has been assigned the risky mission to protect an important scientist, that has developed a an unique formula to develop a new source of energy, and who has been targeted by a dangerous group of North Korean spies.
A simple and plain plot that works as perfect justification for a 90 minutes action fest that recalls in style to Hong Kong subgenre from the 80´s known as “Girl with Guns” in which action heroines as Moon Lee, Sibelle Hu or Yukari Oshima, among others, had their heyday as action stars. Without a doubt, Asami is a worthy successor of them.
From an explosive opening action sequence, that flaws in some cheap CGI shootings, but mades it up with the brutal fighting, the film only goes in crescendo, with Asami and Ayaka opening their way through different scenarios, fighting like if they were part of a “beat em up” videogame, kicking some really serious asses, in imaginative and devastating fashion, under the action direction of Shigeki Hayase and his stuntmen group “RAL´C Action Group”. Hayase, a veteran in the business that has worked in the Hong Kong movie industry, it has been the action director who has better known how to exploit Asami´s skills as screen fighter, and in this small movie, he made her shine in every frame, with every punch and every kick, having as highlight a terrific duel against Hiro Asuka, the most important representative of Jeet Kune do in Japan. A really original duel in which the fate of the combatants is decided by a roll dice.
However, it would be unfair not to mention the excellent work of Ayaka Tanigaki as supportive buddy for Asami, who with her charisma overshadows her job, but she really delivered an incredible work, fighing and doing her stunts by herself.
The rythm and the pace of the film is incredibly fast, however there´s also a few moments of peace, so the audience can take a deserved break, that allows Asami asan actress to explore her talent for comedy, having some really funny moments that lightens the dark, though cartoonish, tone of the rest of the flick, meanhile we all prepare for the next bang.
The director, Kanzo Matsuura, delivers a product above the average quality for this kind of productions. Putting so much care in the action sequences and giving action fans a solid action spectacle that although its flaws, it has everything to please fans around the world.
So if you have a chance, don´t hesitate and give it a try!!!
The film can be purchased in Zen Pictures site, Amazon or Yes Asia and it had its international released edited in a DVD director´s cut, by Spanish distributor Trashorama
