The first poster and trailer are here for Dan Da Dan, the new supernatural romantic thriller fantasy anime acquired by GKIDS as of Tuesday. Fūga Yamashiro (Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!, The Heike Story) makes his directing debut on the animated series from a script by Hiroshi Seko. DAN DA DAN follows Momo, a high school girl from a family of spirit mediums, and her classmate Okarun, an occult freak. The two of them start talking after Momo rescues Okarun from getting bullied. However, an argument ensues between them – Momo believes in ghosts but denies aliens, and Okarun believes in aliens but denies ghosts. To make the mutual deniers believe in each other, Momo goes to an abandoned hospital known for its UFO sightings, and Okarun goes to a tunnel that is said to be haunted. In each place, they encounter overwhelming paranormal activity that transcends comprehension. Amid these predicaments, […]
I’ve still only just started catching up with Kengan Ashura lately, but I’m not rushing things. If anything, I’m more excited for what’s to come after consuming all of Baki and Baki Hanma in the last several months. Moreover, most recent teaser for upcoming crossover movie, Baki Hanma VS Kengan Ashura, is nothing short of exciting. The same can be said for the official trailer as well, as of its Sunday launch. The “BAKI” series has sold over 85 million copies, attracting readers with the intense duels of Baki Hanma as he seeks to surpass his father, the strongest creature in the world. “KENGAN ASHURA” follows Kazuo Yamashita and Ohma Tokita as they navigate the brutal world of Kengan matches, where corporate disputes are settled by betting on seasoned fighters. Toshiki Hirano, who directed both Baki series on Netflix is back at the helm, directing from a script by Atsuo […]
I’m currently in the midst of a serious anime catch-up on Netflix nowadays. Martial arts and fighting shows are par for the course here in my consumption, and come May 23, the syllabus will include Atsushi Ikariya’s new series, Garouden: The Way Of The Lone Wolf. On the run from his troubled past, Juzo is forced into competing in a deadly underground fighting tournament. Skilled in the respected martial art Takemiya-ryu, Juzo must navigate a path filled with formidable foes and his personal demons — all while dealing with a bounty of three million yen on his head and a detective on his trail. The show is based on Baku Yumemakura’s serial novel, and in its framework, enhances its fight action through capturing the movements of real martial artists via varying styles. Ryota Takeuchi heads up the V.O. cast which also lists Tetsu Inada, Shunsuke Takeuchi, Rintaro Nishi, Tessho Genda, […]
Fist Of The North Star is getting an animated reboot as announced by Warner Bros. Japan in time for the original manga’s 40th anniversary. The studio is says it will use the latest animation technology combined with an all-new cast and creators on the project according to the company’s press release. In 199x, world was engulfed in the blaze of nuclear war. With the Ocean drying up and Earth torn asunder, all life seems to be lost but humans survived stubbornly. However, what dominated the post-apocalyptic world was a seer violence. The remaining humanity was split in two groups: those who kill and take whatever they can and those who are exploited. When all hope seemed lost for the weak, a man in ragged cloth appears. He is Kenshiro, the rightful successor of the Hokuto Shinken martial arts with seven studs-like scars in a shape of the Big Dipper. His […]
Ryousuke Takahashi (Armored Trooper Votoms, Phoenix, Ozma) is directing an animated series rendition of the hit manga, The Fable, from Tezuka Productions. Mayumi Morita (Black Jack, Vampire Knight) is penning the series alongside Yuya Takashima who is also overseeing the series scripts, with key character designs by Hisama Kinoshita, Saki Hasegawa, and Junichi Hayama. The Fable animated series was announced in the 32nd issue of Kodansha’s Weekly Young Magazine according to Anime News Network‘s coverage via Comic Natalie. Katsuhisa Minami birthed the award-winning manga for Weekly Young Magazine back in 2014, which centers on an elite killer whose name and reputation strikes fear in the underworld. A number of things that could go wrong eventually do, however, when his employer remands him to an extenuating hiatus away from killing. Actor Junichi Okada took the mantle for two live-action films directed by Kan Eguchi in 2019 and 2021 from Shochiku. Those […]
After helping lead the trendy delinquent schoolgirl subgenre in film and TV in the key cast for the live-action Sukeban Deka franchise, it was in 1989 when actress and recording artist Yui Asaka became the face of another hit IP. Adapting Naoki Urasawa’s manga and tankubon publication for Toho, director Kazuo Yoshida’s feature adaptation of Yawara! centers on Yawara Inokuma, a humble schoolgirl with dreams of homemaking and falling in love, aspirations she’s forced to contend with her love for judo and the unwanted spotlight it earns her in the sports world after using it to singlehandedly foil a robbery. The film joined Asaka with a cast that also included Keiju Kobayashi in the role of Jigoro, Yawara’s legendary grandfather whose stubbornness supersedes him regularly in his attempts to set the stage for Yawara’s hopeful grand debut in the sports world. Actress Yorie Yamashita starred as Sayaka, the daughter of […]
The word is out as of Thursday with a teaser and casting announcement for Scott Pilgrim The Anime, a new animated series that takes from Universal’s 2010 live-action adaptation of the hit graphic novel, Scott Pilgrim VS The World. The series was announced last January, and hails from Netflix and Science SARU with actor Michael Cera returning to lead the voice cast line-up that includes the co-stars of the original, including Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Allison Pill, Aubrey Plaza, Anna Kendrick, Chris Evans, Satya Bhabha, Brandon Routh and many more. Plot details remain pending but as novel and film lore tell it, the story centers on a garage band member whose slacker status says nothing of his willingness to chase girls. His latest catch is a spontaneous woman named Ramona, ultimately tying himself to a fate that will have him challenged by her seven evil exes, forcing him to confront himself […]
