Late Legend Kurosawa’s THE MASQUE OF THE BLACK DEATH Resurrects In Huayi’s Slate

Acclaimed auteur Kurosawa Akira is making his posthumous return to the big screen amid Huayi Brothers Media’s latest announcement of its film slate. Among its titles is reported to be The Masque Of The Black Death, based on the intriguing short story work of Edgar Allan Poe which tells of a prince and his noblemen fending off an outside epidemic with an elaborate masquerade within their castle. The legendary award-winning filmmaker of such titles as Seven Samurai – the film that inspired many Western remakes thereafter as The Magnificent Seven, as well as Ran, Yojimbo and Kagemusha, began the script in 1975 and finished it before passing away in 1998. Huayi will be partnering with Chen Kuo-fu’s CKF Pictures for the film’s completion hopefully by 2020 while a director remains to be seen. For the most part, the slick visuals, stunning and stylish portrayals and designs inspired by Shirow Masumane’s original work and Oshii Mamoru’s treatment thereafter don’t offer much to protest offer and you can get a glimpse of that in a new featurette which released on Tuesday. Hopefully not too far off from an official teaser or trailer until its August release, the seventh and presumably final character poster arrived for Miike Takashi’s live-action adaptation of JoJo’s Bizzare Adventure. The poster showcases actor Iseya Yusuke who takes on the role of Kujo Jotaro, a stand user who initially appears in the Stardust Crusaders arc of the original manga by author Araki Hirohiko, and subsequently in the Diamond Is Unbreakable arc on which the film is based. Iseya is joined by lead actor Yamazaki Kento who plays Higashikata Josuke, a high school student who comes from a long line of users of Stands – entities that when summoned can momentarily exhibit unique abilities. I’ve actually taken a cautioned interest in director Rupert Sanders’s Ghost In The Shell. Really all that’s needed are for the reviews to come out but the protest over the film has quieted down some and I think it’s largely attributed to the overwhelming approval of what we’ve seen so far in trailers and posters. Granted, I’ll never get used to a non-Japanese character being given a Japanese surname and this film certainly tows the edge a bit. Personally if acclaimed anime auteur and GiTS vet Oshii Mamoru had something to say about this then I wish he’d say it…but who are we to twist his arm at this point. I very much enjoyed Rising Tiger Film’s debut milestone feature, Black Scar Blues, a crime noir with a dark twist, anti-hero tropes and semi-stylish action choreography that amplifies the tragic events that encompass the tale of a broken bond between two friends in the midst of the criminal underworld.
