CONFESSION OF MURDER: Glen Powell To Produce Remake For Universal
Director Jung Byung-gil’s 2012 Showbox crime thriller, Confession Of Murder, is now the subject of remake potential as of Thursday’s reporting from Deadline’s Justin Kroll. Universal is said to have acquired the rights with Chris McBride tapped to pen the script.
The original film starred Jung Jae-young and Park Si-hoo in the twisty tale of a detective’s renewed chance to catch a killer, now freed due to statute of limitations, and confessing his crimes fifteen years later amid a buzzy book tour. Confession of Murder was Jung’s second film following Action Boys, his 2008 documentary on the Seoul Action School.
Prior to his last film, Carter, releasing on Netflix in 2022, Jung directed the 2017 actioner, The Villainess, starring Kim Ok-vin. It drew numerous rave reviews, as well as nominations and awards from various locations, including earning the Daniel A. Craft Award For Excellence in Action Cinema at the 16th New York Asian Film Festival. The movie also became influential in its dynamic action scenes, including the propulsive motorcycle action scene that inspired a similar scene in Chad Stahelski’s John Wick: Chapter 3 (2019).
Director Jean Markose’s Malayalam remake of the film came in 2014 with Angels, followed by Yu Irie’s own remake in 2017 as Memoirs Of A Murderer.
Barnstorm’s Glen Powell and Dan Cohen will be producing with Winged Tiger’s Naomi Funabashi and Rishi Rajani.
