It’s been nearly a decade since actor and filmmaker Young A. Lee relocated from his bearings here in New York City to Taiwan. He’s done a few television shows since then, while also developing his own sci-fi property, Raze Of The Cyborg. Raze Of The Cyborg hails from Lee’s own independent production firm, Fluid Robot Studios, which is credited for the visual effects applied alongside Renavatio Studios for John Hsu’s multi-award winning 2019 survival horror, Detention, based on the 2017 RPG from Red Candle Games. Lee stars in Raze Of The Cyborg, playing an assassin who fuses his body with cybernetic implants to hunt down human traffickers and rescue his girlfriend. With baited breath, fans rejoiced when they learned of the return of actor Takeru Satoh as the famed ‘Battousai’ in Keishi Otomo’s newest live-action pivot, Rurouni Kenshin: The Final/The Beginning – a two part saga that ventures into the mystery of our titular reverse-bladed samurai’s scar, and his battles with a nefarious arms trader. On Friday morning, Japan offered the world it’s biggest glimpse yet with a short teaser which you can check out above. The new Kenshin tete-a-tete will open back-to-back on July 3 and August 7, respectively.

From what began as a 2003 comedy short to a cult series favorite a little over ten years ago as a Globes de Cristal favorite, actor Alexandre Astier is back and wearing multiple hats once more to shepherd his take on classic Arthurian folklore in Kaamelott – Premier Volet. Astier returns to the role of King Arthur, delivering an offbeat comedic adventure that sees Arthur hiding in Rome and plotting “his comeback to oppose the army of his former friend Lancelot”. French outlet SND unveiled the first teaser on Wednesday and a French theatrical release has been set for July 29.

Lest I go into too many specifics for those who haven’t yet seen the first, director Herman Yau is back in the saddle with Hong Kong-based distributor Universe teasing a summer sequel release of Andy Lau starrer, Shock Wave 2. This story follows the pursuits of a former bomb disposal expert caught in a web of intrigue as he’s framed for a number of bombings in the city, and forced on the run to clear his name. Lau is joined by actress Ni Ni, and bona fide actor Sean Lau.

Debut director Matthew Pope’s Blood On Her Name was especially of the more jovial feats for festivalgoers last year. Regrettably, I never got around to this title while it made the rounds for Yellow Veil Pictures at Fantasia, and eventually at Beyond Fest in Los Angeles for its U.S. premiere, but a release is definitely much closer now with with a day-and-date select theatrical and VoD rollout scheduled for February 28. The past decade has definitely seen its share of stalled franchises and even a few releaeses, and for varying reasons. China is no stranger to these occurences with seeming overproduction and heavy-handed censorship that has so often stifled these releases, and even in a few cases where confidence all but dissipates. The most definitive example of this that I can recall was the kibosh put almost instantaneously on Peng Zhang’s 2018 feature debut, Asura, which, if the rumors are correct, could finally make way to a streaming release in the mainland. Late Wednesday evening, IGN published the first official look at actor Michael B. Jordan in the new espionage thriller, Without Remorse, opening in theaters September 2020. The film hails from Paramount Pictures and centers on Jordan’s latest incarnation as Tom Clancy staple John Clark, origin story of John Clark, a Navy SEAL-turned-CIA ops officer whose mission of vengeance opens a door to an even darker, more dangerous conspiracy. With five directing credits between them, Lee Hae-jun and Kim Byeong-seo had their work cut out for them with their latest disaster epic, Ashfall – internationally titled for market appeal and for western audiences, particuarly in the U.S. where CJ Entertainment will eventually signal its own release stateside. The two round up a cast headed by Lee Byung-hun, Ha Jung-woo, Don Lee and Bae Suzy for the story of a seismologist who teams up with a rogue North Korean officer to help prevent a disaster following the sudden eruption of Baekdu Mountain, endangering the Korean peninsula. Jiao Zi’s animated summer blockbuster, Ne Zha, was a welcome feat for moviegoers. With a trilogy in the works on that end, a new team is getting behind another offering on the animated front with Legend Of Deification, another tale centric to the Fengshen Bang universe based on Chinese mythology teased at the end of Ne Zha. Cheng Teng and Li Wei are directing the animated follow-up spectacle with a new production team of their own. The story is based on Jiang Ziya who, on orders from the gods, gathered an army of people with special powers to overthrow the Shang kingdom, with Ne Zha serving as one of his generals. The new film will focus on Jiang Ziya in his own journey of self-rediscovery following the overthrow of the Shang Kingdom. Sahamongkol’s own Sia Jiang may not be putting out the popular action-packed, death-defying and stunt-loaded thrillers that drew fans in like bees to honey back in his Ong Bak and Chocolate heyday. Still, he’s kept himself notably busy since then and his latest endeavor, Necromancer, underscores this notion. This one brings aboard director Piyapan Choopetch (Mu Ex 1 and 2, Hashima Project), whose return here presents this project as maybe something of a reimagined effort from his 2005 film if my translations are correct.
