Donnie Yen’s ‘John Wick’ Spin-Off Rolls Cameras Next Month
While Donnie Yen’s John Wick spin-off still doesn’t have a title, production will begin next month according to Deadline’s Anthony D’Alessandro. Yen will reprise his role from Chad Stahelski’s John Wick: Chapter 4 as blind assassin “Caine,” freed from his obligations with The High Table as seen in the previous film.
Yen will also exec produce as well as direct the film, which adds to his directing credits which date back to 1997’s Legend Of The Wolf, his freshman debut; A few of Yen’s more recent credits include 2023’s Sakra, and The Prosecutor. Actress Rina Sawayama, who plays daughter Akira to Hiroyuki Sanada’s Koji in John Wick: Chapter 4, will also return.
Mattson Tomlin penned the script with co-scribe Michael McGrale, with Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee producing next to 87Eleven Entertainment’s Stahelski, as well as John Saunders, and franchise star Keanu Reeves.
The “Caine” spin-off is only the next round for the John Wick franchise which took off in 2014 from Lionsgate via Summit, starring Reeves in the title role as widower assassin forced to kill his way back out of a world he thought he left for good after falling in love. Details on a fifth canon film remain pending on the franchise following Reeves’ brief return to the role in the Ana de Armas-led spin-off, Ballerina, from director Len Wiseman.
