Actor Keanu Reeves is well underway dealing the bullets, blows and judo throws in Chad Stahelski’s John Wick: Chapter Two going into the weekend. In the meantime, news out of Berlin is reporting that the action star’s most recent casting, Rally Car, currently being shopped at EFM by IM Global, has been nabbed by Lionsgate for its U.S. release with plans to shoot in the U.S. and China.
Despite previous reports of
Harald Zwart‘s involvement,
Screendaily reports that Olivier
“Bryan Mills Jumps A Fence” Megaton will be directing the film which centers on a self-absorbed NASCAR driver who learns to win as part of a team upon reviving his career in a cross-China race with a young woman who aspires to be a racer herself. Jeremy Lott wrote the script based on a previous treatment by Stephen Hamel whose shared Comapny Films banner with Reeves will produce with Fundemental Films’s Mark Gao and Gregory Ouanhon, and with Gary Glushon executive producing.
“We are thrilled to be in business once again with Keanu Reeves, who is extraordinary in the John Wick franchise, and we believe Rally Car has tremendous potential to see Keanu in action once again, this time behind a steering wheel,” said Jason Constantine, president of acquisitions and co-productions at Lionsgate.
“Jeremy has done a great job with the screenplay featuring a multinational cast of characters and we’re happy to have Olivier directing another great movie for us.”
I emphasize that bit a lot about Taken 3 as an exemplary mark on one of the worst ways to approach action. Megaton did this earlier on Transporter 3 as well as Taken 2 and he wouldn’t be the only one out of EuropaCorp to treat action scenes so egregiously. As a fan AND critic, I’m hoping his take on Rally Car will change for some more smoother and less rickety editing and shots and I’m not alone on that department.
One other film on IM Global’s ticket is Matthew Ross’s romantic thriller, Siberia, which goes before cameras later this year with Reeves also starring.
