ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK Taps Zack Snyder To Revamp For Studiocanal

Close to twenty years years since efforts began to try and revamp John Carpenter’s 1981 classic, Escape From New York, the word now is that Army Of The Dead and Rebel Moon helmer Zack Snyder will direct. The news comes several years after the long-gestating project last tapped Radio Silence to steer the flick.

The Picture Company’s own Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman are producing through their first look deal with Studiocanal who control the IP along with Carpenter. Set in 1997, the original featured Kurt Russell as outlaw war hero Snake Plissken, forced to infiltrate the dystopian walled prison city of New York and rescue the U.S. President or face death from an explosive device in his neck. Carpenter and Russell reunited for sequel, Escape From L.A., in 1996.

Snyder is also producing along with Deborah Snyder and Wesley Coller at Stone Quarry. Carpenter is also exec producing.
