May 1, 2015 will see the release of Joss Whedon‘s upcoming blockbuster superhero sequel thriller, Marvel’s The Avengers 2, which is still in casting stages. Granted actor Robert Downey Jr. does not leave his place as Iron Man in the franchise, fans will get to see the ensemble cast return in addition to a few new actors.
Today,
The Wrap tells the public that actor
Aaron Taylor-Johnson, best known for his role as the lead in the brutal crimefighting action comedy films,
Kick-Ass and
Kick-Ass 2, is being tapped for the role of Quicksilver. The news comes as actor
Evan Peters (Never Back Down, Never Back Down 2) was reported for the same character in
X-Men: Days Of Future Past director Bryan Singer’s upcoming superhero follow-up to Matthew Vaughn’s film
X-Men: First Class.
In the story line, Quicksilver (a.k.a. Pietro Maximoff) is described as a mutant whose gene grants him the ability to travel at superhuman speeds. He is also Magneto’s son and the brother of Scarlet Witch (a.k.a. Wanda Maximoff), as well as a reformed villain of the X-Men and was once an Avenger. But according to a recent interview with Marvel Studios President
Kevin Feige over at
SuperHeroHype, the relationship between these character will not be established in the film
“We both have them.” He says.
“There’s a specific arrangement with those two characters that would allow us to use them with ‘Avengers,’ but not discuss or reference their mutant or Magneto-related lineage. They can use them as mutants and as Magneto’s relatives, but cannot have anything to do with ‘The Avengers.'”
It is currently not known who will play Scarlet Witch in either film, although actress Saoirse Ronan (Hanna, The Host) was one name mentioned in recent reports on “The Avengers 2”. In an interview with The Mary Sue in late May regarding having heard about the role and her interest in it, Ronan said “I have heard about it and yes, I would. Yeah, of course I would. I love Joss and I love those films, and I love his handle on them and how he portrayed these kinds of superheroes. I think it’s very different from what anyone else has done. So yeah, I’d love to be in it.”
Ronan currently stars with Alexis Bledel, Danny Trejo and James Gandolfini in the Geoffrey Fletcher film, Violet & Daisy, while Johnson is currently busy filming Godzilla for next year. Kick-Ass 2 comes out in theaters on August 16, 2013. X-Men: Days Of Future Past is due out in theaters on July 18, 2014.
