GHAATH: Chhatrapal Ninawe’s Long-Hindered Marathi Crime Thriller Gets Vindication With First Poster Ahead Of 73rd Berlinale
Director Chhatrapal Ninawe’s Marathi-language crime thriller, Ghaath, is finally set to get its day at Berlinale, according to Variety’s Naman Ramachandran who also debuted the film’s poster for its world premiere.
The announcement comes after a long and hard-fought battle by Ninawe to get the film delivered, two years after then-producer Jio Studios pulled the film from screening at the 71st Berlinale after the film won the NFDC India WIP lab award. Ninawe documented this in accordance with the ensuing series of events in a social media post in which he accused Jio Studios (then-producer of the pic alongside Drishyam Films) of “blatant discrimination”, which you can read more about in our detailed report last May.
More on Ghaath below:
An unsparing psychological portrait of the civil war that has been raging in central India for over 50 years. Set in the middle of the jungle, we see what happens to perpetrators and victims whose lives are marked by a constant proximity to violence and death.
Platoon One Films has since acquired Jio Studios’ share of the film and now joins Drishyam Films in representing the film for its World Premiere at the 73rd Berlinale’s Panorama strand. Variety quotes Ninawe stating the following:
“It was a long, hard and adventurous journey, but I’m so honored to finally be premiering our film at the Berlinale, home to so many artists that have inspired us along the way. ‘Ghaath’ is a film about trust, betrayal and ambush. It is a thriller which goes deep into the jungles and deeper into the psyche of its characters. I’m grateful to Platoon One Films and Drishyam Films for having faith in our film, and I hope it finds its audience in Berlin, India and beyond.”
The 73rd Berlinale will officially announce its line-up in the next few days. Check out the poster below and visit the official website for more info.
