I Just Debuted At Polygon. Check It Out!
I’ve been a creative for most of my life, although if you told me 20 or 30 years ago that I would find a place in online writing and journalism, I would’ve looked at you like you were smoking something.
Nowadays, though asthmatic as I may be, I’m more inclined to ask to share whatever you’re having, if any. Forty years into this life with an interest in the arts, I now come with at least fifteen years experience, writing for several small (and large) websites covering politics, and for the majority of that period, movies.
Alas, it was back in April that site co-contributor and freelance film critic Matthew Essary made my name a recommendation to the senior editors over at Polygon. The proposed subject matter? A celebration of Black action stars with a selection of names of our choosing, among which partly include Denzel Washington, Pam Grier, Jim Kelly, Billy Blanks, Fred Williamson to name a few, along with my two entries: kung fu stars Carl Scott and Robert Samuels.
That article is now up and running over at Polygon courtesy of Pete Volk who helped guide me through the crucial editing process of it all. It certainly taught me somethings about my own writing, try as I may to be good at what I do, but this is definitely something I take great pride in as I learn to adapt and grow as an indie journo with my own platform.
The excerpts are ripe with some of the most informed and excellent details and musings on the topic, featuring Essary along with Josiah Howard, Frankie “Balboa” Diaz and Christian Valentin. Head over to Polygon now and have a read, and feel free to follow all of the authors at their respective socials. They’re a great bunch!
Native New Yorker. Been writing for a long time now, and I enjoy what I do. Be nice to me!
