Kawaguchi Kaiji’s 2014 Big Comic publication serves as the basis for the 24-hour tale centered on the captain and second-in-command of the aircraft carrier, Ibuki, intervene when 20 mysterious boats fire upon unto Hateruma Island, taking Japan Coast Guard officers hostage in the process.
Kazunori Ito (Mobile Police Patlabor, Gamera) and Yasuo Hasagawa (Last Operations Under the Orion, Isoroku) penned the script which, according to Komatsu Mikikatsu at Crunchyroll, takes a few liberties from the manga by not depicting the antagonists in the film as Chinese.
