Lakeith Stanfield To Lead Shakespearean-Infused, Futuristic Chanbara Hip-Hop Hybrid, PRINCE OF CATS Adaptation For Legendary
Ronald Wimberly’s Image publication, Prince Of Cats, is now the subject of Legendary’s latest acquistion as of late Tuesday. As Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr. exclusively wrote, the adaptation will be a starring vehicle for actor Lakeith Stanfield (Sorry To Bother You, Get Out, Death Note) with Selwyn Sefyu Hinds (HBO’s Who Fears Death) penning the script.
Prince Of Cats was originally released in 2012 from DC/Vertigo, and is described as an 80’s hip-hop retelling of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet with a mix of urban drama, samurai action and classic Shakespearean theater. Set in a Blade Runner-esque version of Brooklyn, N.Y.C., the story is told from the perspective of Romeo’s cohort, Tybalt, and his Capulet crew as they engage nightly in sword duels with the hated Montagues.
Janet and Kate Zucker of Zucker Productions are producing Prince Of Cats. Jon Silk, who brought it in to Legendary, is overseeing with Ali Mendes.
