Millenium, Cinelou Revive Efforts To Reboot RED SONJA

More than thirty years since the actress Bridgette Nielsen’s iconic portrayal of fantasy Marvel character Red Sonja, reports at Deadline have it on good terms that Millenium Media are back on top of efforts to reboot the classic IP for the big screen. The character was originally recreated by Roy Thomas and artist Barry Windsor with partial inspiration from Robert E. Howard’s own shortstory work from the 1930s, and centers on a young girl from the Western Hyrkanian steppes who trains and sets out to seek revenge for her own rape and the murder of her family.

Richard Fleischer’s adaptation initially bombed critically and commerically but sustained a cult following over the years through its merchandising and a television adaptation in the 1990s. The news of rebooting comes eight years since previous attempts to revamp Red Sonja fell short from 2010 and onward.

Millenium Media and Cinelou Films are fast tracking the project with a new screenwriter now being sought to help construct a brand new story from the IP currently succeeding in print at Dynamite Entertainment; Avi Lerner and Joe Gatta are producing with Mark Canton and Courtney Solomon.

Executive producing are Boaz Davidson, John Thompson and Trevor Short at Millenium next to Campbell Grobman Films’s Christa Campbell and Lati Grobman and Cinelou’s Scott Karol, and Luke Lieberman who holds the rights to the character.
