The trades are officially reporting that Punisher and Jessica Jones are no more with Netlfix completely purging itself of its Marvel TV roster.
Via The Wrap:
“‘Marvel’s The Punisher’ will not return for a third season on Netflix. Showrunner Steve Lightfoot, the terrific crew, and exceptional cast including star Jon Bernthal, delivered an acclaimed and compelling series for fans, and we are proud to showcase their work on Netflix for years to come,” Netflix said in a statement. “In addition, in reviewing our Marvel programming, we have decided that the upcoming third season will also be the final season for ‘Marvel’s Jessica Jones.’ We are grateful to showrunner Melissa Rosenberg, star Krysten Ritter and the entire cast and crew, for three incredible seasons of this groundbreaking series, which was recognized by the Peabody Awards among many others. We are grateful to Marvel for five years of our fruitful partnership and thank the passionate fans who have followed these series from the beginning.”
The shows were announced in 2013 and launched in Spring 2015 as the start of a raft of shows featuring Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. There was always a flux of fandom between all four shows – higher for some than others. The culminating 8-episode series, The Defenders was a fine watch but didn’t garner enough attention for a second season while the phenomenal success of actor Jon Bernthal in the role of Punisher between Daredevil season 2 and his own spin-off series drew some rousing reactions from comic book fans with actress Deborah Ann Woll also starring.
Bernthal, who has pretty much been signaling to fans for well over a week now that he was fine with walking away from the show following its season two premiere on January 18, took to Instagram to post the following:
To all who have served. All who know loss. All who love and understand Frank and his pain. It has been an honor to walk in his boots. I’m endlessly grateful to the comic fans and the men and women of the Armed Services and law enforcement community who Frank means so much to. Thank you to the USMC and all the wonderful soldiers who trained me. Go Hard. Be safe.
Jessica Jones, now in its third season following its premiere in late 2015 starring Krysten Ritter will premiere later this year. This news also comes as Marvel revs up its own slates at Hulu and Disney+.
