News Briefs: THE OLD GUARD 2 Adds Cast, More For THE BOYS, ‘Cobrai Kai’ Trio Snags DUKE NUKEM, S.S.’s Latest Gets An Arthouse #encoRRRe
• Victoria Mahoney, second unit director on Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker, will direct the mix of new and returning cast members for The Old Guard 2 for Netflix. The original comic on which the film is based was created by Leandro Fernandez and Greg Rucka, the latter who penned the script which now sees Theron reprising her role alongside her original co-stars, in addition to Chiwetel Ejiofor, Veronica Ngo, and the latest additions of Uma Thurman and Henry Golding. • With more room for animation in its roster with a second season of “Diabolical” in the talks, Amazon Studios is now gearing up for a fourth serving of hit series graphic novel adaptation, The Boys. The news comes following its season three premiere on the streamer on Wednesday. (Variety)
• It’s taken more than twenty years to happen but the latest word on a live-action adaptation of Gearbox’s videogame franchise, Duke Nukem, now assembles Cobra Kai creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald. The trio are producing the film via their Counterbalance Entertainment banner alongside Legendary who have since acquired the rights from Gearbox, and with a search for a writer already underway with Counterbalance’s option to have one of its own at the pen. • Variance Films and Potentate Films are expanding the release of S.S. Rajamouli’s hit Telugu action epic, RRR (Rise! Roar! Revolt!), to arthouse cinemas following its one-night #encoRRRe event release on June 1. The news comes following the film’s $140+ million dollars in global gross since beginning its progressive rollout in March from India and throughout the world, and with now open longer at select theaters in New York City, California, Tennessee and Texas.
