The undoubtedly gargantuan task of manifesting an entire cinematic universe is never easy, with Indonesia’s previously-announced aspirations for the Bumilangit Cinematic Universe serving up to be quite the task. The good news is Joko Anwar’s 2019 film, Gundala, helped get the ball rolling, which now brings us to (what looks like) an unrelated endeavor in the form of upcoming shortfilm, Patriot: Selamatkan Indonesia, which has since launched a teaser as of late July.
Starring Jaymes Riyanto (writer and producer of Ajari Aku Islam) who is also directing from his own script, Patriot: Selamatkan Indonesia hails from RA Pictures and Royal Sumatra Group subsidiary, Royal Pictures, and is based on the writings of retired general, AM Hendropriyono, and is set to be the precursor for a much larger film production down the line. It centers on a Chinese-Islamic solider forced to come to terms with the extremist demographics of his believes while seeking to eradicate a deadly terrorist network with the help of mysterious superhero, Patriot.
The teaser boasts some impressive spectacle and nifty costume design, even brandishing the venerable Cecep Arif Rahman on screen as he’s been invariably entrenched in helping get superhero properties off the ground (see Satria Dewa Gatotkaca for example).
Patriot: Selamatkan Indonesia also stars Epy Kusnandar (The Raid 2) and longstanding action veteran Willy Dozan (Fistful Of Talons, Comic 8: Casino Kings 1 & 2).
It looks like early days for there to be a release right now, but the teaser is above and packed with plenty to endulge for its short duration, and hopefully we’ll get to learn more as this picks up outside Bahasa language news outlets. Fingers crossed!
