And so it is – With the Tomb Raider reboot in development as of the last five years, the film finally found a director in The Wave helmer, Norwegian filmmaker Roar Uthaug according to THR. It’s a step forward for MGM and Warner Bros. following Graham King’s GK Films’s acquiring the property from Square Enix in 2011, with this now marking Uthaug‘s English-language debut.
The first two live-action features from Paramount Pictures, based on the now 19-year old game franchise released earlier by Eidos Interactive, starred Angelina Jolie and did fairly well at the box office, but not enough to keep going. Snow White & The Huntsman scribe Evan Daugherty was previously attached to provide the screenplay following drafts from writers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Children Of Men, Iron Man) among others. Those duties might now go to Geneva Robertson-Dworet, who wrote Hibernation, depending on how talks go while Cassidy Lange, Drew Crevello and Denis O’Sullivan oversee for MGM, Warner Bros and GK Films, respectively.
The games mainly center on a globe-trotting adventurer who dodges danger lurking at every corner, from booby traps in hidden caves and moutains to enemies both human and grotesque and gigantic. An actress is yet to be announced but with a director on board, hopefully we’re not too far from that update.
