SUPERGIRL Feature Film Officially In Development At WB
Deadline‘s Mike Fleming Jr. confirmed on Monday that an adaptation of Supergirl is in the works at Warner Bros. News comes in the way of a new era at the studio with respect to its DC properties in the wake of its struggles after Justice League failed to impress at the box office in 2017.
Otto Binder and Al Plastino launch the character via Action Comics in 1959 as the cousin of the titular root protagonist, “Superman”, who left doomed planet Krypton as a teen. Actress Helen Slater portrayed the character in Jeannot Szwarc’s 1984 film prior to its 2007 television rendition through the hit series, Smallville, and its current serial run on CBS featuring actress Melissa Benoist.
Oren Uziel, whose credirs include 22 Jump Street and The Cloverfield Paradox, as well as the in-production Sonic The Hedgehog and producer James Wan’s Mortal Kombat, is penning the script with a female director possibly to be attached.
Other WB/DC titles forthcoming include New Line’s Shazam, Wan’s Aquaman and Patti Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 1984, in addition to Ray Fisher’s expected solo outing as Cyborg and that of fellow Justice Leaguer Ezra Miller’s The Flash which films next year. The studio is also branching out with a new raft of titles to be filmed soon, so far listing Cathy Yan’s Birds Of Prey, Todd Phillips’ untitled Joker movie and Matt Reeves’ current work on The Batman among others.
As for Into The Badlands and upcoming series Wu Assassins co-star Lewis Tan’s recently-revealed discussions about Nightwing, or what awaits for Henry Cavill’s future as “The Man Of Steel” himself, we’ll leave that by the watercooler for later unpacking.
