Onslaught is what’s happening these days for the good folks at A24. The action thriller will reteam The Guest and You’re Next duo, writer/director Adam Wingard and co-scribe Simon Barrett. Borys Kit’s Heat Vision column at THR bills the movie as a “gonzo action horror” that will shoot in the Fall. The report also notes Wingard’s recent $522 million global box office success with Godzilla X Kong: The New Age, adding his return for another chapter notwithstanding, Onslaught would come first. The same likely goes for the upcoming sequel to 1998 John Woo thriller, Face/Off, to which Wingard confirmed his attachment back in early 2021. Updates remain pending, as always. Read more at THR.
A24 got the ball rolling about a month ago with the first official trailer for director Rose Glass’s titilating new crime thriller, Love Lies Bleeding. As the film nears its March 8 select release and expanded March 15 rollout, the newest trailer is here which you can catch above, as well as a trio of character posters to help bide our time. Love Lies Bleeding is led by Kristen Stewart, Katy O’Brian and Ed Harris and tells of a reclusive gym manager named Lou (Stewart) who falls hard for Jackie (O’Brian), an ambitious bodybuilder headed through town to Vegas in pursuit of her dream. As the official synopsis notes, “their love ignites violence, pulling them deep into the web of Lou’s criminal family.” I’m linking the character posters here, here and here, while I’ve taken the liberty of spotlighting probably one of the best posters I’ve seen, created by graphic […]
The true story of the inseparable Von Erich brothers, who made history in the intensely competitive world of professional wrestling in the early 1980s. Through tragedy and triumph, under the shadow of their domineering father and coach, the brothers seek larger-than-life immortality on the biggest stage in sports. Sean Durkin’s newest wrestling drama is ready to come out of its corner and tug brutally at the heartstrings with The Iron Claw, which is coming to theaters on December 22 from A24. The official trailer is out as of Wednesday as well following the poster a few days ago, and with that, I stumbled upon a few thoughts posted by site contributor Matt Essary who tweeted the following about the film. I’m stunned by how accurate this looks. I was not expecting that at all. For those that don’t know, The Von Erich family story is the saddest tale in the […]

One of the things I purely enjoy about Dev Patel deals inherently in that I’ve always felt there was an untapped potential. Undoubtedly he’s proven himself time and again, and I guess that’s the beauty of it we’re seeing as we look forward to A24’s newest dark medieval fantasy epic, The Green Knight. There’s heavy drama, compelling visuals and a few morsels of action I could go for here, and I know Patel definitely has it in him. An epic fantasy adventure based on the timeless Arthurian legend, ‘The Green Knight’ tells the story of Sir Gawain (Dev Patel), King Arthur’s reckless and headstrong nephew, who embarks on a daring quest to confront the eponymous Green Knight, a gigantic emerald-skinned stranger and tester of men. Gawain contends with ghosts, giants, thieves, and schemers in what becomes a deeper journey to define his character and prove his worth in the eyes of […]
Heaven Knows What and Good Time directors Benny and Josh Safdie have returned with some pretty feasible Adam Sandler screentime in their latest, Uncut Gems. Reviews and reactions from its Telluride and Toronto festival premieres have all been pretty telling for folks who’ve screen it this year and now it’s in the hands of A24, eyeing a theatrical release date for December 13. From acclaimed filmmakers Josh and Benny Safdie comes an electrifying crime thriller about Howard Ratner (Adam Sandler), a charismatic New York City jeweler always on the lookout for the next big score. When he makes a series of high-stakes bets that could lead to the windfall of a lifetime, Howard must perform a precarious high-wire act, balancing business, family, and encroaching adversaries on all sides, in his relentless pursuit of the ultimate win. Sandler is joined by Lakeith Stanfield, Julia Fox, Kevin Garnett; Idina Menzel, Eric Bogosian […]

It’s been a long wait since Johnny Mad Dog helmer Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire stirred the festival pot last year with his latest entry into the arena, A Prayer Before Dawn. Joe Cole (Peaky Blinders, Green Room) stars in the new drama inspired by from Billy Moore’s autobiography of the same name echoing the true story of a boxer thrown in one of the most hellish prisons in Asia where he fights to redeem himself. That tale has already been receptive to critics at Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, Screendaily and Indiewire among others and currently sits home at DirecTV Cinema for an exclusive on-demand run with 72-hour rentals for consumers as of last week. Folks who are a bit more keen on a theatrical release, however, are welcome to mark the date on their calendars for an August 10 select release courtesy of A24. A Prayer Before Dawn is the remarkable […]
In what can otherwise be described as one hell of a harrowing moment of his life, author Billy Moore found inspiration in telling his story through the 2014 book, A Prayer Before Dawn. To date, the literature of Moore’s life has since transitioned onto the big screen from Johnny Mad Dog helmer Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire, and actor Joe Cole (Green Room, Peaky Blinders, Thank You For Your Service) leading the cast and with acquisitions made in the past year in various territories including the U.K. and the U.S., North American distributor A24 is now following through with an official teaser trailer as of Monday. Based on the international best-seller, A Prayer Before Dawn is the true story of Billy Moore, a troubled young British boxer sent to one of Thailand’s most notorious jails. Refusing to die inside prison, Billy becomes a student of the lethal art of Muay Thai boxing, and in the process, finds a brotherhood that will guide him on an incredible […]
Following its rousing presentation at SXSW earlier this year, acclaimed director Jared Moshe’s sophomore offering, The Ballad Of Lefty Brown, was aptly snatched by A24. A DirecTV release will lead off the film’s On-Demand rollout next month before hitting theaters on December 15 and the film saw its first official trailer come out this week. When cowboy Lefty Brown (Bill Pullman) witnesses the murder of his longtime partner — the newly-elected Senator Edward Johnson (Peter Fonda) — he strikes out to find the killers and avenge his friend’s gruesome death. Tracking the outlaws across the vast and desolate Montana plains, Lefty recruits a young gunslinger, Jeremiah (Diego Josef), and an old friend, a hard-drinking U.S. Marshall (Tommy Flanagan), to help deliver the men to justice. After a gunfight with the outlaws leaves Jeremiah wounded, Lefty returns home with the names of Johnson’s killers only to find that he is being […]
A24 and DIRECTV have acquired U.S. rights to the western drama, Woman Walks Ahead. The film made a strong showing for its world premiere at Toronto International Film Festival hailing from Our Kind Of Traitor helmer Susanna White. Jessica Chastain (upcoming Painkiller Jane) leads the film from a script by Stephen Knight (Locke, Eastern Promises, Dirty Pretty Things) which takes its cues from true events. Catherine Weldon (Chastain) is a widowed artist from New York in the 1880s, who travelled to North Dakota to paint a portrait of Chief Sitting Bull. After some initial tension, the two strike up an improbable but deeply committed friendship, joining forces to take on the U.S. government in a pivotal battle for Native American land rights. The movie features great classical storytelling but also a completely revisionist portrait of the American West, unfolding a unique and compelling story through the eyes of an unflappable, […]
Following screenings at Venice, Telluride and Toronto, Paul Schrader’s highly acclaimed new thriller, First Reformed has been officially acquired by A24 for U.S. distribution. A 2018 release is in tow for the film written by Schrader, best known for memorable screenplay credits like Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, and directing nods such as his 1978 directing debut, Blue Collar, and the 1997 Academy Award® winning Nick Nolte headliner, Affliction. First Reformed centers its haunting thriller narrative on Ernst Toller (Ethan Hawke), a mysterious Reverend based in a small town in upstate New York. When Toller is approached by Mary (Amanda Seyfried), a pregnant woman struggling with a seemingly unstable, radical activist husband, he gets embroiled in a treacherous scenario that forces him to confront his troubled past and drives him to increasingly dangerous and shocking behavior. About the acquisition, A24 said, “We are absolutely thrilled to be working with the […]
I haven’t had much room in life to fully digest a lot of films or even enjoy most of the ones I discuss, and that goes for director Jeremy Saulnier’s Blue Ruin which has been in my wishlist for what feels like ages now. I’m still keen on his work, personally, with an adherence toward gritty crime drama and suspense thrillers to go with my personal tastes in film next to action, and as of late, Saulnier’s newest, Green Room, certainly aims to do that with Sir Patrick Stewart leading in pure, brilliant villainy. Green Room is a brilliantly crafted and wickedly fun horror-thriller starring Patrick Stewart as a diabolical club owner who squares off against an unsuspecting but resilient young punk band. Down on their luck punk rockers The Ain’t Rights are finishing up a long and unsuccessful tour, and are about to call it quits when they get […]
Now this looks like a teen romcom I can get used to. Actress Halee Steinfeld as a highly trained assassin looking for an out and finds her way into high school in search of a life she’s been missing, only to see her past come back in a deadly way? Yes, despite the usual assortment of wit and adolescent camp you might normally find in any pubescent teen comedy, at least this one packs some heat. SYNOPSIS: A 16-year-old international assassin yearning for a “normal” adolescence fakes her own death and enrolls as a senior in a suburban high school. She quickly learns that being popular can be more painful than getting water-boarded. Jessica Alba and Samuel L. Jackson add their share of starpower to this long-awaited gem from director Kyle Newman with A24 releasing the film to subscribers of DirecTV on April 30 before granting a limited theatrical release […]
