The progession of Danny Wong’s latest thriller, Cyberheist, has been interesting to observe as previous trailer uploads saw it as Disconnect’d. A cyber security engineer develops an AI program that could bring down the entire network with catastrophic effects. He must prevent it from falling into the wrong hands and causing irreversible disaster. Cyberheist stars Aaron Kwok, Gordon Lam, Simon Yam and Megan Lai, and is produced by Soi Cheang. The newest trailer is just below from a little over a week ago and still offers quite a bit of sci-fi flare with its visual gems throughout. Enjoy!

It’s daunting that actor Matt Wu has only directed one feature film in his career. The ceremony of his 2016 crime drama, One Night Only, is nothing short of deserving and well-earned for its multiple award nominations and critical acclaim. Featured performances by Aaron Kwok and Yang Zishan amplify the luminous nightlife of fictional Liberty City, a mecca for gambling in the region as we’re introduced to Gao Ye, a shameless gambling addict out of money, out of places to run, and out of time. He’s eighty-thousand yuan in the red with a loanshark and nearly resigned to his fate when he meets Momo, presumably a prostitute who invites herself into his home much to his chagrin. Reluctant to accept her company at first, he decides to bide his time and utilize her for whatever cash she can spare, between eating out, and gambling whatever is left at the nearby […]
Multi-nominated actor-turned-director Matt Wu became a favorite in 2014 at Busan with his award-winning short, Stairway. He then followed suit with 2016 feature debut, One Night Only, which sparked rounds of critical acclaim upon its summer release. The film’s respective Best Picture and Best Production Design nominations at Shanghai and Taipei, and at Taiwan are considerable plusses next to its buzz from many critics, including Asian Film Strike whose L.P. Hugo deems it as “An assured, deftly-written and superbly-shot directing debut…carried by Aaron Kwok at his best.” New York-based Cheng Cheng Films picked it up that year for distribution at up to 20 locations for its own theatrical run stateside, and is now slating a January 31 release on VoD. Leading the cast are Aaron Kwok and Yang Zishan from a script by Peng Ren, and with Lei Hao, Andy On, Jie Gao and Tiantian Fan also starring. Having lost […]
Felix Chong of ‘Overhead’ fame writes and directs PROJECT GUTENBERG starring Chow Yun-Fat and Aaron Kwok for theatrical release this Fall.
THE MONKEY KING 4 is finally on the way after a headlining making trilogy that last saw Aaron Kwok taking to the lens.
Director Soi Cheang easily found himself on more sturdier ground amid franchise efforts in 2016; While The Monkey King became a smashing success a few years earlier, there’s no question the film had its share of flaws that needed acknowledging per sequel intentions. The Monkey King 2 drew a slightly smaller return but nevertheless retained a stronger outing commercially, as well as critically and for a number of reasons, which makes his new third installation all the more rewarding. Light on heavy-handed martial arts and substantive in splashy, stunning visuals, action, spectacle and riotous comedy, we return to the folkloric world of Wu Cheng’en’s ancient literary telling of Buddhist monk, Tang, and his iconic disciples led by our titular mythological hero, the incorrigible, yet brave and noble Wukong, played once again by Aaron Kwok. The film almost instantly propels you into a whirlwind adventure as calamity finds our journeying heroes […]
It’s high time for the rollout of promos to present Soi Cheang’s The Monkey King 3. With the 2014 installment becoming a hit and launching a franchise with a much more solid framework in its sequel, phase three now moves us forward once more with Aaron Kwok shepherding the narrative once more as we journey into an all-female kingdom with our heroes now faced with even greater foes and diar circumstances. The third installment of the blockbuster fantasy series sees the return of the Monkey King (Aaron Kwok) in his most action-packed adventure yet! While continuing their epic journey to the West, the Monkey King and his companions are taken captive by the Queen of an all-female land, who believes them to be part of an ancient prophecy heralding the fall of her kingdom. With a lot of sorcery and a little bit of charm, the travelers devise a plan […]
Acclaimed Port Of Call helmer Philip Yung’s period cop thriller, Theory Of Ambitions, is currently being slated for a late 2018 release. For this, Global Group’s film shingle, Global Group Films Limited has announced a joint investment with Dadi Century Films (Beijing) Co., Ltd and Mei Ah Film Production Co, Ltd in the new movie being designated as a year-end big budget blockbuster with Aaron Kwok and Tony Leung Chiu Wai debuting together on screen. The Assassin and Mark Of Youth helmer Billy Chung is arriving this Friday in Chinese cinemas with a new period war drama in the midst. Bringing forward a new variant on a 1958 film classic, Eternal Wave promises a new variant on the tale which centers its 1930-set tale here of two Chinese agents who orchestrate fake a marriage in order to rebuild communications in the wake of Japan’s occupation of Shanghai. The story takes in 1937, after the fall of Shanghai during the Japanese invasion. Here he met a simple but with a very strong sense of justice Lan Fang (Zhao Liying). Known as the “underground party couples”, the two fight hand in hand against the evil Liang Dong (Zhang Han), the Japanese invaders and pseudo government spies to start a thrilling […]
It’s nice to know that Soi Cheang has managed to find his footing with the continuing saga of The Monkey King franchise. After a dodgy albeit successful 2014 debut, its sequel proved even more critically fruitful and with none other than Aaron Kwok donning the costume full-fledged folkloric legend a few years ago. Thus, the first of at least two more installments are on the way, here and now with The Monkey King 3: Kingdom Of Women slated for a Chinese holiday opening on February 16, 2018. An official teaser has emerged with plenty to hint at for its narrative as it primarily focuses on the story that sees our folkloric quartet of heroes venture unto a land resided only by women. The result: Hilarity ensues as three men get their butts owned by girls… Not the titular King himself though as, of course, he’s the King for a reason. […]
It’ll be another bustling holiday release for Soi Cheng’s The Monkey King 3: Kingdom Of Women. Aaron Kwok is back in character and costume and readying for an early 2018 release as usually inspired from the pages of Wu Cheng’en’s “Journey To The West”, taking off from last year’s hit sequel in which Kwok reprised Donnie Yen’s own 2014 portrayal, and all of which have been box office hits in some capacity. The film is now rolling out some new character banners in a campaign that will likely profuse further with more and more artwork as the months pass. The ones below are just the start of it so feel free to take a look at the cast in full-tilt threequel mode with Kwok joined by William Feng as the Monk, Tang, actors Shen He and Him Law respectively starring as Zhu Bajie (the pig demon) and Sha Wujing (the […]
I’m just sort of counting the days until news breaks on distribution for Lien Yi-Chi’s new film, Peace Breaker. Until then, the latest trailer has arrived with Kwok starring as a corrupt cop caught in a jam involving a deadly accident, lots of drugs, and a mysterious enemy who holds all the cards in actor Wang Qianyuan. The trailer definitely sells the action, but for an adaptation of a Korean thriller with darker characters, a lot of this feels a lot more comical than it probably should. Maybe some subtitles would fare better with context and maybe we’ll see that happen shortly after the film’s August 18 China release. Check out the trailer!
Sweet Alibi helmer Lien Yi-Chi’s latest, Peace Breaker, is officially stamped for an August 18 release in China and a new official trailer is making the rounds. Those keen on Asian cinema will find themselves in familiar territory, with this particular story – taking cues from its hit 2014 South Korean predecessor, A Hard Day, in which a morally bent detective, in the wake of a family member’s death, tries to cover up an accidental crime only to find himself in deeper and deadlier straits. That story now has actor Aaron Kwok leading opposite Brotherhood Of Blades co-star Wang Qianyuan who plays the mysterious figure holding our anti-hero hostage for his own means. It’s all connected in the narrative, rife with mystery and suspense and a good, fair deal of explosive thrills and excitement, and you’re more than welcome to feast your eyes on it all below!
