These days, Adam Wingard may best known for giving us giant CGI apes and lizards punching each other in the face, but long before Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire hit our big screens, he was dabbling in horror. In 2014 he delivered the excellent horror-thriller, The Guest, and in 2011 he burst onto the slasher scene with the superb YOU’RE NEXT. Well now we can all sit back and enjoy You’re Next in gorgeous 4K (or standard Blu-Ray, if that’s your preference) when UK-based distributor, Second Sight Films, releases the film with all the bells and whistles on August 19th. Second Sight are at the top of the Blu-Ray game at the moment. Their releases have physical media fans drooling the moment they’re announced, and rightly so. Onslaught is what’s happening these days for the good folks at A24. The action thriller will reteam The Guest and You’re Next duo, writer/director Adam Wingard and co-scribe Simon Barrett. Borys Kit’s Heat Vision column at THR bills the movie as a “gonzo action horror” that will shoot in the Fall. The report also notes Wingard’s recent $522 million global box office success with Godzilla X Kong: The New Age, adding his return for another chapter notwithstanding, Onslaught would come first. The same likely goes for the upcoming sequel to 1998 John Woo thriller, Face/Off, to which Wingard confirmed his attachment back in early 2021. Updates remain pending, as always. Read more at THR.
A lot has happened in the two and half months since the first promo footage arose for Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire. Therein also was the albeit jocular crying from incels about how Godzilla was somehow “Barbified” because he’s so pink now. Stuff like that deters me a good deal from online discourse about movies, so I’d rather keep my sanity. Meanwhile, Adam Wingard just directed what looks to be another hopeful banger in his newest return to the Toei-adjacent Monsterverse which opens in theaters on March 29 from Warner Bros. Pictures. The studio also has a new trailer out now which you can view below that dives in a little more to the story which now sees the two gargantuan rivals teaming up to battle a devastating new foe. Dan Stevens, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry and Kaylee Hottle star in the pic from a script storied Wingard, […]

Enter Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, joining much of the cast of 2021’s Godzilla VS. Legendary Pictures’ cinematic Monsterverse follows up the explosive showdown of “Godzilla vs. Kong” with an all-new adventure that pits the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence—and our own. “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” delves further into the histories of these Titans and their origins, as well as […]
Before any big title fight, there is anticipation in the air; crowds buzzing with excitement, gamblers rapidly placing bets as the odds shift back and forth, and analysts debating the merits and flaws of both combatants. It’s one of the joys of combat sports – the buildup. The hype. It’s a feeling that films don’t quite capture. Sure, there is intense excitement before a new blockbuster debuts but it doesn’t have the same gleeful banter between opposing fans, the heated debate over who will emerge as the winner, and the chest-thumping tribalism of rooting on a favorite fighter. Hollywood has tried to capture this feeling before in the buildup to other “versus” films, where different franchise mainstays squared off against one another, but it never really captured the vibe of actual anticipation for a big fight. With Godzilla VS. Kong, however, the hype has been there. Whether it’s due to […]
News broke a few days ago pertaining to trade news updates regarding a reboot of the 1997 action thriller, Face/Off. You’re Next and The Guest duo Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett were reported to “reboot” the original for Paramount with Wingard at the helm and since then, the two took to social media to clarify just what’s what. Deadline‘s Mike Fleming Jr. updated his exclusive report on Thursday with word that a sequel is in the works for the John Woo-directed action thriller that starred John Travolta as a vengeful FBI agent whose desperate mission to close the book on his son’s death at the hands of a terrorist finds him fighting for his life and that of his family, when a bold face-swapping procedure to go undercover goes completely sideways. Wingard, who is currently at the helm for this year’s Godzilla VS. Kong, took to Instagram stating “I would […]
While the past week or so finally gave way to the teeniest bits of footage WarnerMedia could affordably dole out ahead of its Warner Bros. Pictures slate for 2021, it wasn’t without some serious wrangling at the table with the company enduring quite the brouhaha from some folks at the notion of seeing its studio titles land on smaller screens – a reasonable choice either way for a country where going to the movies during a pandemic is still a gamble. At long last though, a deal was finally reached earlier this month in particular with Adam Wingard’s latest, Godzilla vs. Kong, which is currently set to bow in theaters and IMAX, and for thirty days exclusively on HBO Max from March 26. Most of all is that the trailer fans were promised this week is now here, raising all sorts of hell on Earth along with the single-most burning […]
Nevermind all the fan art that’s made the rounds in the last few years, Legendary has unleashed the kraken with the first official key art for Godzilla vs. Kong which is now slated for a March day-and-date theatrical release alongside HBO Max from March 5. Adam Wingard is at the helm for this latest installment of the saga that began with Godzilla (2014) for a franchise that still stands the test of time with multiple films in its wake, as well as an upcoming animated series landing soon on Netflix. Legends collide as Godzilla and Kong, the two most powerful forces of nature, clash on the big screen in a spectacular battle for the ages. As a squadron embarks on a perilous mission into fantastic uncharted terrain, unearthing clues to the Titans’ very origins and mankind’s survival, a conspiracy threatens to wipe the creatures, both good and bad, from the […]
Should a third live action Gintama film arise in the coming years, at least it’ll have a few more fourth-wall gags to tap into per actor Oguri Shun‘s growing career. The two initial Fukuda Yuichi-directed manga adaptations are hits at home and abroad, otherwise now signaling Shun’s crossover readiness with word from Deadline that he’ll be joining the currently growing roster for Godzilla VS. Kong from Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. Oguri, whose career spans several of hits from a list of hit directors including Kitamura Ryuhei, Miike Takashi, Quentin Tarantino, and as of late, Fukuda Yuichi, now adds The Guest helmer Adam Wingard who helms the fourth installment that succeeds Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla (2014) and Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ Kong: Skull Island (2017); Michael Doughterty’s forthcoming Godzilla: King Of The Monsters wrapped in September for its May 31, 2019 release. Terry Rossio is writing Godzilla vs. Kong which commences filming this […]
There’s a good chance the remake of I SAW THE DEVIL won’t come but for another possibly three or so years, but I’m curious…
Admittedly, I’ve avoided promoting Adam Wingard’s latest manga adaptation, Death Note, largely due to my own distate on the count that in small, but no discountable terms, the film was made on behalf of a falsehood. The notion made public several months ago by co-star and producer, Oka Masi, that the production couldn’t find Asian actors who spoke good English hasn’t sat well with me for months leading up to the film’s release, which made it all the more bittersweet watching it. The director of You’re Next brings something slightly derivative, albeit stimulating to this newest cinematic treatment of the hit manga by creators Ohba Tsugumi and Obata Takeshi, telling of a mysterious book that falls into the hands of a brilliant high school kid named Light Turner, giving him conditional powers to kill people with the stroke of a pen. Balancing between his consultation with the notebook’s donor – an […]
Making a name for himself with low-budget horror thrillers You’re Next, A Horrible Way To Die, and The Guest, Adam Wingard has closed a deal with Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. to direct the upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong for a May 22, 2020 release date. Legendary and Warner have teamed up to revive the classic monster universe. Starting with the 2014 release of Godzilla, it culminated with the phenomenal success of Kong: Skull Island earlier this year (which has grossed $565 million, globally) that a sequel, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, starring Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, and Millie Bobby Brown, is currently in production. Wingard’s directorial reboot of Blair Witch last year was made for $5 million and had a box office run of $45.2 million. Not too shabby for a slightly entertaining horror flick that has lost a lot of it’s audience and charm. The writers that Legendary has put together to author […]
Netflix Never mind that actor Lakeith Stanfield is playing socially awkward, yet intellectually sturdy and agile L, you needn’t look long on Twitter to find people complaining about Adam Wingard’s treatment of the hit manga and anime property, Death Note, which now has a release date scored for August 25 on Netflix. SYNOPSIS: What if you had the power to decide who lives and who dies? We suggest you obey the rules. Based on the famous Japanese manga written by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, Death Note follows a high school student who comes across a supernatural notebook, realizing it holds within it a great power; if the owner inscribes someone’s name into it while picturing their face, he or she will die. Intoxicated with his new godlike abilities, the young man begins to kill those he deems unworthy of life. The concerns being, obviously, that most of the casting […]
Actor Dan Stevens is currently one of three people who may be up for a role in producer Joel Silver’s upcoming trilogy reboot of the John Carpenter cult classic, Escape From New York, which was announced last year. Time will tell if Stevens suits the role or not, but his performance is still pending for director Adam Wingard‘s chilling new thriller, The Guest, where he plays a former soldier caring for the family of a fallen comrade, only to become the center of suspicion when people in town start dying. A few clips have already arrived online, one of which you can now check out in the embed below. Picturehouse will be theatrically releasing the film in select North American locations on September 19, so check your local listings.
Director Adam Wingard‘s newest thriller, The Guest, is set to make its appearance at the Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday and Sunday – September 13 and 14, respectively – before releasing theatrically in the U.S. on September 17. Having already earned the approval of many observers in the film festival circuit this year, it’s easy to see why it looks so appealing, especially if you’ve seen Wingard‘s previous work on the 2013 horror thriller, You’re Next. This time around, actor Dan Stevens takes center stage as a soldier on leave who finds himself in the welcome arms of a family of a fallen comrade, only for suspicion and mayhem to arise when the daughter suspects him for the deaths that are occuring in town. And this week, Digital Spy is offering a touch of that anarchy in a newly released bar room brawl clip from the film with Stevens […]
Last year’s contained action horror thriller, You’re Next, won widespread approval from fans everywhere last year, and even left talks open for a sequel. It even put actress Sharni Vinson on my map for potential action stardom, and considering that it’s what she wants as well, I totally have her back. For this, in part, we have writer/executive producer Simon Barrett and editor/director Adam Wingard, two of the people for getting that conversation started, and while we await developments on those ends mentioned above, the duo are back with a brand new suspense thriller this year titled The Guest, starring Dan Stevens, Maika Monroe, Brendan Meyer, Sheila Kelley, Leland Orser and Lance Reddick. SYNOPSIS: A soldier on leave arrives at the home of a fallen comrade. Friendly and helpful, they welcome him in, but when people start mysteriously dying in town, mayhem ensues as their teenage daughter starts wondering if […]
