THE SPINE OF NIGHT: AMC’s Shudder Launches Celebrated Animated Horror Thriller Next Month

Lee B. Golden III

Our own Matthew Essary had the pleasure of interviewing writer/director duo, animator Morgan Galen King and screenwriter Philip Gelatt, ahead of the release of their most recent and celebrated festival fanfare, The Spine Of Night, just late last year. On that note, you’re welcome to check out the write-ups here, and it’s totally worth a read if you’re intrigued by animation and different styles of art and execution. It’s a work now heralded and readying its new home via AMC Networks’ premium horror/thriller streaming service, Shudder, beginning March 24, with availability in the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. The streamer is also launching its green band trailer which you can view here, but we’re going with the red-band embed atop the page as always because…well, it’s damn cool. THE RUNNER: Boy Harsher’s Chilling New Darkwave Doc-Style Meta Horror Thrills In Select Theaters And On AMC’s Shudder In January

Lee B. Golden III

Are you into horror and darkwave music any? Turn your interest over to music and film duo Boy Harsher (Jae Matthews and Augustus Muller), and their latest cinematic effort, The Runner. The new film will have its day-and-date run in select theaters and on AMC Networks’ Shudder streamer in North America, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand from January 16. Unable to tour and unwilling to make “club music”, and with Matthews coping with her MS diagnosis, the two began developing the project, using Muller’s moody, cinematic sketches and Matthews’ own conception of “a sinister character: a woman running through the woods”, crafting a meta-style “documentary” horror that weaves Boy Harsher’s recording process with a story that “explores lust, compulsion, and the horrific tendencies of seduction.” Written, directed, and produced by Boy Harsher, The Runner follows a strange woman as she travels to a secluded, rural town where her violent […]

ETHERIA 2021 Shorts Announced Ahead Of Exclusive Festival Launch On AMC’s Shudder

Lee B. Golden III

This particular announcement landed in the wrong e-mail folder but I still feel like pushing this one. The Etheria Film Festival is back for its eighth year as initially reported by Variety the other day, and with an official short films showcase line-up also slated to stream exclusively on AMC’s premiere horror streamer, Shudder, from Friday, June 25 through July 25. PG: PSYCHO GOREMAN Review: Cult Mayhem And Thrills For The Fully Initiated

Lee B. Golden III

There are kids’ films, and then you have films that push the envelope to the limits of any “Parental Guidance” certifications. Indeed, you have the latter with Manborg and The Void helmer Steven Kostanski’s R-rated fantasy horror, PG: Psycho Goreman, which bolsters with every bit of bombast, silliness and amusement in its use of violence to cohese an otherwise imperfect, but amusing tale about children. Such are who we meet in Mimi (Nita-Josee Hanna) and Luke (Owen Myre) who stumbles upon a glowing gem after a robust game of “crazyball” sees Luke digging a hole. The next day, a chance meeting occurs with a vicious alien being (Matthew Ninaber in costume, voiced by Steven Vlahos) eager to destroy everything in sight, except only he realizes he can’t – that is – the moment Mimi catches herself wielding control of the extraterrestrial. What follows is an oddball tale of adventure, about a burgeoning out-of-this-world friendship between […]

AMC’s Shudder Guarantees VICIOUS FUN In June

Lee B. Golden III

AMC Networks’ premium horror streamer, Shudder, is bolstering with some fine picks for subscribers, all set to launch in June. Joining the line-up will be Cody Calahan’s fifth film to date, Vicious Fun, having already picked up some film festival recognition from this year’s virtual Panic Fest and at Brussels both back in April. The award-winning horror comedy will land as a Shudder Original premiere on Tuesday, June 29, and the streamer has also released a clip to help set the mood proper. Given it’s about a guy forced to attend group counseling for attendees of the psychotic and murderous kind, I’d say it’s fair to allude to what that mood just might be. Joel (Evan Marsh, Shazam!), a caustic 1980’s film critic for a national horror magazine, finds himself unwittingly trapped in a self-help group for serial killers. With no other choice, Joel attempts to blend in with his homicidal surroundings […]

PG: PSYCHO GOREMAN Is Ready To Bathe In Your Blood. Or not.

PG: PSYCHO GOREMAN Is Ready To Bathe In Your Blood. Or not.

In case you think horror films take themselves too seriously, check out PG: PSYCHO GOREMAN, an unexpected dark comedy. Written and directed by Steven Kostanski (The Void, The Divide, Father’s Day), the film turns the concept of “evil alien conqueror” on its head. Siblings Mimi and Luke unwittingly resurrect an ancient alien overlord who was entombed on Earth millions of years ago after a failed attempt to destroy the universe. They nickname the evil creature Psycho Goreman (or PG for short) and use the magical amulet they discovered to force him to obey their childish whims. It isn’t long before PG’s reappearance draws the attention of intergalactic friends and foes from across the cosmos and a rogues’ gallery of alien combatants converges in small-town suburbia to battle for the fate of the galaxy. The film stars Nita-Josee Hanna (Books of Blood, 4teen), Owen Myre (“NOS4A2,” Alternate Ground), Adam Brooks […]

Following announcements late last year after premiering for Sitges and Nightstream, Shudder launched its official trailer for thrilling horror romp, Boys From County Hell. FRIED BARRY: Ryan Kruger’s SA Supernatural Sci-Fi Will Be All The Rage On Shudder In May!

Lee B. Golden III

It was a helluva thing last year to get an in-character shout-out from actor Gary Green as his latest starrer, Fried Barry, held captive virtual audiences at the festivals. You can read more of my thoughts about Ryan Kruger’s feature directing debut in my review here, while you may also note the film’s multi-territorial nab for release thanks to the genre stewards at AMC’s Shudder. The premium streaming service for horror, thriller and the supernatural has acquired the psychedelic and walloping South African sci-fi thriller romp for release in North America, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand from Thursday, May 6. Kruger, who directed the pic from his own script, also storied the film with James C. Williamson, in addition to both serving as producer, with Nicolai Fuglsig (12 Strong) exec producing. Fried Barry, a Ryan Kruger thing, follows the story of a drug-addled degenerate who, after yet […]

THE QUEEN OF BLACK MAGIC Reigns In The Official Trailer Ahead Of Shudder Release

Lee B. Golden III

The last twenty years have been fruitful for director Kimo Stamboel who continues to garner a good share of ceremony for his ventures in genre cinema, notably of the horror variety. The Macabre, Killers and Headshot co-helmer’s new film, The Queen Of Black Magic, is on track to hit AMC’s Shudder streamer on January 28, and the official trailer and key art are finally making the rounds. The Queen Of Black Magic is Stamboel’s latest partnership with Joko Anwar (Satan’s Slaves, Gundala, Impetigore), and serves as the latest incarnation of Liliek Sudjio’s 1981 horror classic of the same name. This one is just one of several titles incoming from Stamboel who I’ve had my eye on since he was announced to partner with a certain producer/screenwriter for an action film I’ve been dying to see made, and I certainly hope this pic gets him closer to it. Read the full […]
