Andy and Brian Le are percolating a little more these days with a content-loaded return to their YouTube channel at Martial Club. The two have been busy in the film arena having since contributed to the works of directors like Bao Tran, the Daniels, Destin Daniel Cretton, Chaya Supannarat, and the late Pearry Teo to name a few while still working on some of their own in-house projects. Tentatively, that includes a short series of lookback videos of past Martial Club shortfilms including their 2020 tribute to Bruce Lee, “Fist Of Fury”. It’s a fun little dive into how they analyze their work as we stand by to see what else they have in store, so check these out below and subscribe to their channel if you haven’t already done so.
If you’re a fan of martial arts cinema and have kept up with the burgeoning waves of online talent since 2000, you’ve likely had your eye on filmmaker Bao Tran given his output through his POV-films banner. By 2008, the move to etch his place in independent film history a time or two, including with the wunderkinds of Zero Gravity for noir-tinged action drama short, Bookie, would only be the fortuitous start of Tran’s journey of resolute creativity through community. For this, it’s been nine years since Tran began development, and six since setting it all in motion with his 2015 proof-of-concept, The Challenger, eventually taking his hustle to the Frontières pitch floor with a rich concept and a bold statement to the industry and the world that now culminates his ambitious feature film debut, The Paper Tigers. Directing from his own script and adherent to a bona fide cast […]
Martial Club is still proliferating their brand in the fields of martial arts, health and wellness, stunts and action cinema. To date, they’re still committed to their YouTube audience while working on their own endeavors, which no less includes their very own feature film. Team member Andy Le announced the project in November 2018, as a declaration to unilaterally grow and evolve toward making their own opportunities happen. “Martial arts action cinema was the platform that inspired me to do martial arts. And so we wanna create the same.” said Le at the time. Le says he is currently writing the project in the channel’s newest video. The team has been assembling their own content for their YouTube channel – including a Fist Of Fury-inspired short which he says is about a year or so overdue – while working on what Le says in the video were “opportunities that we […]
Bao Tran‘s exhilarating 2015 kung fu proof of concept in The Challenger is taking shape at long last with its current evolution, The Paper Tigers, already underway in Seattle, Washington. The official headline casting for the film has also been laid out as well with Dino-Ray Ramos at Deadline confirming actors Alain Uy (The Morning Show), Ron Yuan (Blood And Bone) and Mykel Shannon Jenkins (Undisputed 3: Redemption). The trio will star respectively as Danny, Hing and Jim – former kung fu prodiges now working as middle-aged men one kick away from pulling a hamstring. When their master is murdered, they must quell their differences in order to seek justice. The actors are joined by 102 Productions’ own Phillip Dang along with sibling martial arts duo, YouTubers Andy and Brian Le (Unlucky Stars, Luc Van Tien: Kungfu Hustle). The three will play a gang of martial artists who come from […]
Stunt performance, martial arts and film troupe, Martial Club, are affirming followers of their channel and social media on plans to make a martial arts feature film. While stunt performer, martial artist and dynamic Instagram kicker Brian Le was the first to give mention to the project earlier this week, his brother, fellow actor, stunt performer and martial artist Andy Le took to their Martial Club YouTube channel to explain the team’s latest updates. “Me, Brian and Daniel [Mah] and our guys have been at this for a really long time.” says Le. “And we’ve been hammering it out, we’ve been training a lot, we’ve been shooting a lot, we’ve been editing a lot, we’ve been doing a lot. We literally put our blood, sweat and tears into everything. And at this point, we’re just sick of waiting for opportunities to come to us, and our dream is to inspire […]
If you’re looking for more martial arts action on film 2016, you don’t need to look hard at all. It’s definitely happening and Hong Kong Cinema stunt veteran, producer and filmmaker Robert Samuels (Don’t Give A Damn, Red Wolf) has every intention of taking part in this foray with his feature debut thriller, Beast. Following years of continued development before eventually filming and exclusively premiering a concept trailer late last year in New York City, the Indiegogo campaign has officially launched with the goal of attaining a small-yet-serviceable budget to help make Beast a reality and distribute the film to audiences. Debut actor Marco “Da Answer” Johnson, son of WMAC Masters talent Willie “Bam” Johnson, spearheads this latest effort with a seasoned cast that features Andre Royo and John DeBlasio, and Asian cinema stalwarts Vincent Lyn (Armor Of God 2: Operation Condor), Chang Shan (Shaolin V. Lama), Lo Meng (The […]
It’s been a rather sobering weekend for some around the globe. I’ve personally kept busy with a few things myself to keep my spirits up though, and that included putting this week’s Hit List together, chock-filled with exciting, wacky and dazzling imagery to share, and I sincerely hope this week’s entries do something for you. So, as always to start with the first of the Hit List presents a slew of spectacular stunt reels, but I’m starting this bad boy off in the only way I could this week, and that comes from Hong Kong Cinema superfan Tony Coates with an extensive and well knit montage of career highlights centered on action legend Sammo Hung Kam-Bo. He’s called Big Brother for a reason and you need only look at his work of over fifty-four years and still counting to see why with more from him in store, including choreography on […]
Last month’s online shortfilm release, The Challenger, should serve as an exact reminder that there are people in the world – filmmakers who have an ardent love and respect for the craft to keep the martial arts genre alive. After all, it’s played a huge role in the lives of many people, and if that weren’t true, the genre wouldn’t have had the impact and global appeal it did in more than fifty years. Director Bao Tran knew this prior to working among the likes of Hong Kong film legend Corey Yuen Kwai and action stars like Johnny Tri Nguyen as of late. To that effect, I think it’s quite fortuitous that actor, martial artist and competitive tricker, stuntman, choreographer and master in the making, Martial Club’s own Andy Le, knew this too, and to see such like-minds collaborate to achieve something as solid and inspiring as a shortfilm preamble […]
Nuff said. Stay tuned for an interview in the coming weeks with Le and much more, and support The Challenger today!
Director Tran Quoc Bao‘s latest short, The Challenger is arriving today in full kung fu fashion, and I’ll be sharing it tonight with a slew of other fantastic shorts in this evening’s Hit List. In the meantime, here are some great new stills accompanied by a handful of behind-the-scenes pictures of our cast and crew. View post on imgur.com Unlucky Stars co-star Ken Quitugua makes his appearance opposite Martial Club member Andy Le, in a story of a young martial artist who challenges his hero in an underground fight to make a name for himself. The project was filmed earlier this year before Le flew for tour with filmmaker Jacob Sebastian Malm and a team of other martial artists to perform for Giacomo Puccini’s Turandot at this year’s Bregenzer Festspiele in Europe. It’s also being billed as a prequel to an upcoming feature film, and after screening a copy just […]
Oh look! More videos. It’s funny, really. I always expect to run short every week and I usually end up with at least 20 or more. This week I’m just shy of a few and I wouldn’t be surprised if I missed any. Some of these gems are not easily detectable through simple searches. Anyway, let’s get this list started with some tricking and stunting reels! Martial Club founding member Andy Le‘s is up first and while this isn’t his first appearance in a Hit List article, it probably won’t be the last. The reel slate also includes stuntmen Brian Ho, Alfred Hsing, Daniel Graham, Vincent DeComo Helvetic Tricking’s latest feats within lush Swiss locales, a Bear Grylls Adventure segment featuring Greek traceur, Maria Raptaki!, and some kickass GoPro training with Hong Kong fight choreographer, Pound Of Flesh action director John Salvitti! Brian Ho – Stunt Demo 2015 from Brian […]
All actor and martial arts athlete Daniel Mah really wants to is eat his lunch and enjoy his desert. Unfortunately, Andy Le, being the ninja that he is, can’t resist! It’s the latest video from the folks over at the one and only Martial Club, one of the most active sports teams in the country and around the world who’ve been upping the content on their YouTube channel by hosting numerous tricking tutorials to accompany their online repetoire. Needless to say, that amalgam of content also includes a growing handful of stylish, comedic action shorts for all audiences around the web, young or old. If you’re a fan of the genre and just visiting, hop aboard! And, uh… do be careful what you eat, lest you end up in a cursed, vicious cycle of random ninja attacks.
I feel like I must have covered LBP Stunts Chicago a lot this year. Aside from what seems to have been a flourishing year for multifaceted stuntman and independent filmmaker Emmanuel Manzanres, it was only two days ago that I covered two of the team’s members, Nate Hitpas and Keith Min in seperate pieces. Now, just three days later, we are back with another collaborative piece from our director, which he wrapped up during his time in California, newly releasing his latest short, From Man To Man – Da Uomo a Uomo: Volume 2. Two years in the making, the shortfilm follows up Manzanares‘ own visionary concept illustrating kung fu action in a western setting featuring actors, Thousand Pounds’ own Vonzell Carter and LBP’s own Brendon Huor in parallel battles that ultimately lead to their final one-on-one confrontation, inspired by the aesthetic presented in Zhang Yimou’s Hero with legends Jet […]
I have often talked about the Martial Club before on my Facebook page. Martial Club is a professional sports team based out in California. The members currently include Daniel Mah, and the Le brothers, Andy and Brian. Andy has been training for about five or six years, with Brian practicing for up to three. In 2009 they started making shortfilms of their own through 2010 when they met Daniel Mah. From what I have researched so far, the team is largely known in its working comnunity as a small group of athletes who train in Wushu Kung Fu and gymnastics, and for competing and showcasing their dynamic skillsets for live sporting events at places like the JAM Gymnasium in Reseda, California. Martial Club is also known for partaking in performing stunts and choreographing action sequences for today’s independent action film industry, as can be seen on their YouTube channel, as […]
