100 Yards was screened and reviewed for the 48th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival, upon virtual invitation. Well Go USA is releasing the film in theaters and on Digital on Friday, November 8. It’s been wild having to wait this long before the film markets picked up on something (or anything) attached to the name of author and filmmaker Xu Haofeng. The man best known for whipping out some of the most artful and concentrated martial arts features to hit screens for well over a decade was all but a blip after landing back on radar with 2015’s The Final Master, when trailers arose for his 2017 actioner, The Hidden Sword, followed by stills and posters in 2019 for “Shi Yan Juan Tian Ya.” Both incumbent period flicks deserved better rollouts they were never given for reasons unbeknownst to this critic, and so it remains to be seen if either of those movies will ever […]
Ladies and gets… you’re about to witness one of the sharpest, most diabolically entertaining and thrilling martial arts movie experiences of your life. It’s 100 Yards, the latest period action drama from co-directors Xu Haofeng and Xu Junfeng, and starring Jacky Heung and Andy On, and it finally has an official trailer with a theatrical U.S.release date set from Well Go USA. In volatile 1920s Tianjin, a mere decade after China’s last imperial dynasty was overthrown, a clandestine martial arts circle arose to deter crime and maintain peace between rival martial arts schools. But after a renowned master dies and names his apprentice—rather than his son—as his successor, he unwittingly kicks off a fierce power struggle that will bring the entire city to the brink of chaos. You’re welcome to read my review from its International Premiere at TIFF last year for obligatory feedback but I loved the shit out […]
“Hunt the Wicked” presents itself as a fast-paced succession of ballistic action with martial arts and even insane car action stunts that goes to the extreme, not giving the viewer a second of rest. The film becomes a dizzying succession of emotions where we have as main attraction, two stars like Xiao Mie and Andy On facing each other in a martial arts confrontation that is not to be missed. On the other hand, the plot is very simple, and as many films of this type nowadays, it suffers from the lack of a memorable soundtrack to associate it with. But anyhow, it has better production values than most of Iqiyi productions despite the abuse of some cheap special effects on its action sequences. The plot revolves around Huang Mingjin (Xiao Mie), a police officer from the narcotics squad who is investigating a drug trafficking ring that is shaking his […]
The Comeback is currently streaming on Hi-YAH!, and is available on Digital from Well Go USA. Mainland action titles tend to fall by the wayside for me. This is mainly because I don’t have an iQIYI account like some of my mutuals do, and so I rely on the good will and economic viability of a streamer like Hi-YAH! to obtain these kinds of titles for their output to the niche Asian film crowd which I’m a part of. Alas, we get The Comeback, which marks the most recent reteaming of director Chris Huo and his Blind War star Andy On, who takes a seat here as antagonist to lead thespian Simon Yam. The streamer’s logline would have you thinking differently as it cites Yam’s role as Mr. Hua, a revered antique dealer in a small village who helps fight back against a violent gang trying to seize the properties. […]
Andy On? And On and On and On, more like! Forgive me horrendous pun, but Andy On (True Legend) seems to be working nonstop at the moment. In recent months, we’ve seen him in The Grey Man, Hunt the Wicked, Cruel War, and To Live Through Death. And according to IMDb, he currently has three more projects in post-production. Does the man sleep? While the quality of his output is a bit of a rollercoaster, with high highs and low lows, the brand new trailer for hip upcoming film, FURY 12 HOURS, has gotten the action cinema community abuzz. Andy On plays Lei Jun, an ex-special forces operative now displaced and living in a foreign country twelve years since the murder of his family, and intent on finding their killer. When an army of terrorists begins flooding his town, the incognito soldier is forced out of hiding to help stage a daring life […]
Streaming giant iQiyi is the place to be these days for Chinese martial arts stars. Whether it’s Andy On, Xie Miao, Tiger Xu, or even Tiger Chen, making a medium-budgeted film for the streaming service, between bigger projects, seems to be the trend. The massive amount of output from iQiyi has led to mixed results but every now and then they give us a gem. Which leads me onto this story. Philip Ng (Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In) announced, via his Instagram page, yesterday, that he is working on a new film for iQiyi, ARMORED. And that will costar the lgend himself, Yuen Biao (The Iceman Cometh). Yuen Biao’s been a little quiet as of late, making lesser known straight-to-streaming films. With Ng by his side, this one certainly has potential. But it doesn’t end there. Also joining the cast is underrated martial arts maestro, Wu Yue (Ip Man […]
Asia’s leading film and TV marketplace, FILMART, recently saw Philip Ng (Once Upon a Time in Shanghai) take the stage to announce his upcoming film, Without Remorse, which he will star in alongside frequent co-star and martial arts giant, Andy On (True Legend). Philip Lui Koon-Nam is set to direct. Lui’s previous (and only) film as director, Undercover Punch and Gun, also starring On and Ng, was met with fairly positive reviews from martial arts fans upon its initial release in 2019. Little is known about Without Remorse at the moment. The FILMART presentation was accompanied with a concept poster showing two silouetted characters squaring off against a destroyed cityscape. However, Ng did take to Instagram to describe the film as a “hardcore martial arts actioner.” Production on the film will start soon so expect details to trickle in shortly.
Chinese streaming platform Iqiyi, gives a hint to the audience with the trailer of their upcoming action thriller from director Feng Huo Sui-Qiang (Blind War, The comeback) starred by Xiao Mie (Fighting the motherland, As God) and Andy On (Special ID, Kung Fu League) The sypnosis shared by the platform tells about the story of a brilliant detective, Huang Mingjin and genius criminal, Wei Yunzhou, through multiple encounters and life-and-death games, revolving around the core secrets of a mysterious and sinister city. As the police and ruthless criminals engage in the process of punishing evil, how each of them makes their choices is explored. Awaiting them is not only a test but also a judgment. The trailer guarantees a brutal action experience on the screen showing the two main characters as bitter enemies that need to fight together for a same goal. Promising a fest of glorious violence that must […]
The streets of a bustling city in China become the ultimate arena for a heated martial world rivalry between a young fighter and his late father’s best apprentice in Xu Haofeng and Xu Junfeng’s “100 Yards,” from Well Go USA.
Martial arts period drama 100 Yards has been acquired by Well Go USA. The film will release in 2024 following its festival run, which includes an upcoming centerpiece premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this fall. 100 Yards previously screened in Shanghai back in June. Set in 1920s Tianjin, northern China, the film stars Jacky Heung and Andy On, and tells of the son of a martial arts master and his most talented apprentice, and their fight to take over a prominent martial arts academy. As the story goes, rather than obey the rule of settling disputes behind closed doors, they take their fight to the street. Also starring are Bea Hayden Kuo, Tang Shiyi and Li Yuan, and also marks a reunion with martial arts choreographer Duncan Leung and The Grandmaster co-writer Xu Haofeng, who co-directs the new period martial arts flick with Xu Junfeng. “100 Yards masterfully […]
If it helps us stay sane for a little while longer, then yes, perhaps I’ll share the sales key art for 100 Yards, the latest martial arts drama from directing duo Xu Haofeng and Xu Junfeng which, until recently, only had a regional Mandarin-language title. Fortissimo Films shared the ink on its website as the latest piece of imagery following several stills that have made the rounds in the past year and spotlighting leading men Jacky Heung (Chasing Dream) and Andy On (Ride On). 1920s Tianjin, northern China. The son of a martial arts master and his most talented apprentice fight to take over a prominent martial arts academy. But rather than obey the rule of settling disputes behind closed doors, they take their fight to the street. The film is also produced by Heung and co-stars Taiwanese actor Bea Hayden Kuo (Kung Fu Monster), Tang Shiyi (The Day We […]
It’s only been a year since we last heard anything on Men Qian Bao Di, but if it feels longer, you’re not alone. Director Xu Haofeng has been an enigma for me as hampered as I am by the language barrier between me and spoken Chinese dialects, but I’m awful glad that other cogs in this vast machine of cinema marketeering are working hard to help proliferate things a bit. For this, we get 100 Yards, the latest from Xu and co-director Xu Junfeng with reports of its upcoming world sales launch at the upcoming Cannes market via Fortissimo Films, excluding North America and Southeast Asia. According to Michael Rosser at Screendaily, the film, which stars Jacky Heung (Chasing Dream) and Andy On (Ride On), has already scored presales with Splendid Film acquiring rights in Germany. As Rosser notes, 100 Yards takes place in “1920s Tianjin, northern China, and centres […]
I had it in mind to share David Fu’s latest music video a few weeks ago, and it slipped in the midst of all of my other goings on. In the wake of Monday’s latest update from martial arts film and stunt troupe, Martial Club, I’m a little inclined to believe there may have been a good reason for the delay. Alas, feel free to check out “Take A Ride” by actor and recording artist Van Ness Wu in the player above, as he faces off against the Club members themselves along with a casino lounge full of angry bar patrons, and a pissed off Andy On. Also, feel free to watch the Club’s own “HK Edit” by clicking here, and if you want more Wu, you’re more than welcome to watch any number of his screen roles in the last twenty years, whether it’s Daniel Lee’s Star Runner, Kevin […]
Two of the latest trailers making the rounds of late highlighting action star Andy On come courtesy of City On Fire for director Huo Suiqiang’s new film, Blind War. The film centers on an ex-SWAT captain forced to cope with permanent loss of his eyesight after an escort mission gone awry, now forced back into the field to rescue his daughter when an old enemy re-emerges. The film also stars Jane Wu (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows) and Vincent Matile (The Eight Hundred), and according to a third trailer that launched over the weekend, is now available in the mainland as of May 1. Peep all three trailers below.
Several stills have already begun making the rounds for Men Qian Baodi (a.k.a. A Treasure In Front Of The Door), the latest from filmmaker Xu Haofeng and co-director Xu Junfeng. Some of these can be seen with additional stills from the film as well as a bit of dialog from actor Jacky Heung who stars among the line-up, all well-knit in a photo promo which you can view above. Production wrapped in the first week of March with a cast that also lists Andy On, Bea Hayden, Shiyi Tang and Zhao Zheng. The film itself takes place in 1920 and centers on the aftermath of the death of a Tianjin martial arts museum curator, whose eldest disciple steps up and takes his pre-ordained place. When his controversial practices compel the community to summon the late curator’s son to claim what is his, a new rivalry for a new era in […]
There was a span of time from the early 1980s until the mid-1990s where Chinese action films from Hong Kong were produced with such regularity that it seemed like instant classics were constantly appearing in video shops. Films by performers like Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, and Jet Li came in like a steady stream but the reality was not all of these films were great. The consistently high volume of output from the HK film industry in those glory days meant that for every actual classic that got released, there were dozens of other action films released that were less than memorable. Even these second or third-string titles though often had an enthusiasm and urgency to them that made up for their poor acting, cheap sets, and incoherent scripts. They also always had action that was head and shoulders above anything else being produced in the world at the time. […]
If a little more Phillip Ng is what you’ve been wanting these days, then pull up a chair and get a whiff of Well Go USA’s latest Hi-YAH! induction, Undercover Punch & Gun, from directors Lui Koon Nam and Frankie Tam. While an elite cop is working undercover to infiltrate a notorious drug ring, his plan is compromised when a rival agency with a grudge attacks during a trade, killing the gang’s leader. Their cover blown, both teams are forced to unite and take to the high seas in an attempt to overthrow the ruthless smuggler behind it all. This one’s taken quite a while to circulate, and for North American genre filmgoers, Hi-YAH! is a perfect landing spot for a title of this kind. The film arrives exclusively on Hi-YAH! from May 7, so you’re not a subscriber yet, I recommend changing that. The film also arrives on Digital, […]
Liu Baoxian is at the helm for military style action thriller, My Ace Dad, which currently awaits a release. Andy On lead the charge in the role of an operative who takes on a criminal organization responsible for producing a counterfeit vaccine that affects his daughter. Ray Lui also stars along with Liang Siwen and Wang Yilin, and while we still don’t have a release date, we do have some marketing gems to brandish in the form of stills and poster art, made known thanks to Asian Film Strike on Twitter.
