Nerdist took to the interwebs to present an exclusive look at the first official poster for upcoming horror thriller, Apostle. It’s the first new-anything since the first still went viral as of May and here with Dan Stevens leading the way and famed Merantau, The Raid and The Raid 2 helmer Gareth Huw Evans directing. London, 1905. Prodigal son Thomas Richardson (Dan Stevens) has returned home, only to learn that his sister is being held for ransom by a religious cult. Determined to get her back at any cost, Thomas travels to the idyllic island where the cult lives under the leadership of the charismatic Prophet Malcolm (Michael Sheen). As Thomas infiltrates the island’s community, he learns that the corruption of mainland society that they claim to reject has infested the cult’s ranks nonetheless – and uncovers a secret far more evil than he could have imagined. Written and directed […]
As late as I was in discovering Hong Kong cinema per my own fandom by the mid-1990s, I proudly went with the momentum, keeping up with as many Dimension, Miramax and Sony releases as I could. One of my favorite DVD picks in the years going forward would be a blind purchase of Aman Chang’s 2000 action adventure comedy, Fist Power, pitting Vincent Zhao against co-star, actor, stuntman and nowadays a stunt coordinator, Jude Poyer. It’s been years since I’ve seen that film, although anyone, in my view, who watches and follows Asian films for as long as I have, or even longer, knows that someone like Jude stands out in a particularly cool way. His career was even subject as part of the Red Trousers Hong Kong stunt documentary in 2003 alongside the likes of Ridley Tsui and the late, great Lau Kar Leung. Jude spoke plentily about his […]
The publicity hasn’t exactly been all optimistic as fans await what lies ahead for Solo: A Star Wars Story. The responsibility shifting from Phil Lord and Chris Miller to Ron Howard will hopefully see a difference as the film approaches its May 25 date with Alden Ehrenrich, Emilia Clarke and Donald Glover starring, especially with Disney not letting up anytime soon with the franchise. Mizusaki Junpei’s animated directorial debut, Batman Ninja, isn’t the first time the popular caped crusader was reconceived by way of Asian mythos (See Batman Of Shanghai). Of course, it was only a matter of time until someone managed to realize this on a full scale and thus, we now have Warner Bros. Japan hailing the DC crowd with Batman Ninja, manifested in part from the people who brought you Afro Samurai, Psycho Pass and Kill La Kill. Release dates remain pending. Further into the suspense and […]
Having finally seen the 2014 action horror suspense thriller, The Guest, a little over a year ago, I was eventually thrilled at the idea of director Adam Wingard having secured the remake rights for Kim Jee-Woon’s I Saw The Devil. It feels like just the kind of role befitting of The Guest star Dan Stevens as he’s the first to come to mind after delivering such an impressive performance in his first film. It essentially put the actor on my radar and with his latest TV and film prospects including X-Men television series spin-off, Legion, and Bill Condon’s Beauty And The Beast next year, I can’t wait to see what happens next. The same goes for Stevens’s latest film announcement made in less than a day after events kicked off at the American Film Market in Santa Monica when it was reported that Gareth Evans was on deck to direct […]
A third outing for stellar crime feature saga, The Raid, still remains on hold in addition to whatever else director Gareth Huw Evans has in tow from here on out. Gladly that hasn’t kept him down from applying himself on paper and with that, he is now poised to begin filming a new period thriller starting in the UK in March. Apostle is the name of the film while in the auspices of XYZ Films will will introduce the film to the American Film Market this week for buyers while producing. THR reports on the film whose story sees a mysterious man on a mission to rescue his sister from a religious cult demanding ransom, digging deeper to uncover its the lies and secrets in the process. The film definitely sounds like a different tone from what Evans is usually known for having applied himself so vehemently with martial arts […]
