One of the best things to come out of Japanese cinema in the last twenty years is the budding friendship between actor Tak Sakaguchi and director Sion Sono. To date, their bloodlettingly hilarious 2014 action comedy, Why Don’t You Play In Hell? is one of my own loosely listed top-ten favorite films in the last ten years (I’ll probably make a decent list before the year is out… we’ll see), and it’s been an especially wonderful journey of my own to discover Sono during my readership of his work on numerous sites before launching my own. This, coupled with Sakaguchi’s own renewed success in the last five years rejoining longtime friend and film cohort Yuji Shimomura for CQC revenge thriller, Re:Born, in addition to partaking on subsequent projects like Red Blade and Shinsuke Sato’s dazzling period action manga adaptation epic, Kingdom, makes following these two so much more worthwhile with […]
Netflix has reportedly snatched up sci-fi thriller Tau this week over at the American Film Market according to Screendaily. The film marks the feature debut for noted storyboard artist Federico D’Alessandro whose credits include a raft of Marvel movies, as well as I Am Legend and Terminator: Genysis. Once a street-smart grifter, Julia is the latest young woman held captive, a body and a mind to be exploited in a fatal experiment. The only thing standing in the way of her freedom is TAU, the advanced artificial intelligence developed in secret by Alex, her masochistic and enigmatic captor. TAU is armed with a battalion of drones and robots that automate Alex’s futuristic smart house and laboratory, the walls lined with screens that visually transport it from grassy plains to the depths of space. TAU’s potential is only limited by his understanding of the world he exists in, but TAU is […]
October is the current goal for the Austin, Texas bound production of director Robert Rodriguez’s latest contribution to live-action anime/manga film lore, Battle Angel: Alita. For this, word now from THR brings actor Ed Skrein into the mix as the villain opposite actress Rose Salazar cast in the title role as of May. Inspired by Kishiro Yukito’s 1990-1995 Shueisha manga, Salazar will play Alita, an amnesiac cyborg whose head is found by a scientist in a scrapyard in a dystopian future America, and refurbished as a battle-capable cyborg huntress named after the scientist’s cat. The film, according to THR, will eventually see Alita taking on Skrein’s role of Zapan, a villanous cyborg who wields a weapon called the Damascus Blade. James Cameron and Jon Landau are producing the film at 20th Century Fox with a cast that also includes Christoph Waltz cast as Doctor Dyson Ido, the cybersurgeon who salvages […]
Little is known on the plot for debut director Tanel Toom’s forthcoming sci-fi epic, Gateway 6, save for a few details. In the meantime, the film is currently drawing up an impressive cast roster which now has Kingsman: The Secret Service co-star, actress Sofia Boutella now starring. Screendaily reports that Toom will direct from Malachi Smyth’s script which sees a military squad stranded on dystopian Earth waiting for relief…or the enemy – whichever comes first. Rounding out the cast so far with Boutella are Jurgen Prochnow, Ed Skrein of Deadpool fame and 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man co-star, Rhys Ifans. Sentinel Entertainment’s own Ben Pullen and Stigma Films’s Matthew James Wilkinson will produce with Pippa Cross executive producing, and Allfilm’s Ivo Felt and Kick Film’s Jörg Bundschuh co-producing. Boutella is currently tapped for appearances in a few big films between now and next year including her starring role as the title […]
I have to say, I wasn’t really impressed with how the fight choreography is being sold in the current trailers for director Camille Delamarre‘s second outing, The Transporter Refueled. The film is coming out on September 4 and with just a few weeks left, the film is a third rail for many who love the previous three and are now brought to the fray with a reboot starring Ed Skrein who’s got some pretty big shoes to fill. Suffice it to say, this film is not an easy sell and the one who want to see it will do so. Having said all this, with the fight action being key to my own hopeful enjoyment of the film in the hopes of its subsequent trilogy to come, a new clip is online featuring Skrein in action, and for what it’s worth, it looks pretty good. Fight choreographer Alain Figlarz definitely […]
It’s obvious that a lot of fans of action star Jason Statham aren’t too keen on anyone else filling in his shoes for another take on the Transporter franchise. For better or worse though, that is what’s happening with Deadpool co-star Ed Skrein staking his claim in the title role. The new film, The Transporter Refueled, is opening in a little over three weeks and with plans for a trilogy in the works, there is a lot of ground to cover. For me, my test was director Camille Delamarre‘s debut remaking Pierre Morel’s Banlieue 13 as Brick Mansions which felt more lackluster and dry in the action than anything. Incidentally, especially with the tone preset in the earlier movies, how the action looks here will be key to whether or not this one will live to tell the tale in the next few years, and while Skrein looks invariably dedicated […]
Personally I’m not yet too sure about the upcoming release of The Transporter Refueled, much less the title. Ed Skrein comes off as a strong actor though, and I’m sure the story well find it’s own way to be entertaining in a way, but my main concern will always be the action and I still have my grievances after Brick Mansions. So, here’s to crossing our fingers, and if an IMAX presentation will help things a bit, then I boldly welcome a sequel. LOS ANGELES, July 27, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — IMAX Corporation IMAX and EuropaCorp announced today that The Transporter Refueled, the re-imagining of the successful trilogy in the studio’s highly profitable action franchise, will be digitally re-mastered into the immersive IMAX® format and released into IMAX® theatres domestically on Sept. 4, followed by a select international footprint in IMAX theatres. Starring newcomer Ed Skrein, The Transporter Refueled, which will […]
I’ll admit I wasn’t too impressed by the initial teaser for director Camille Delamarre‘s upcoming reboot, The Transporter Refueled. Yes, I have a special place in my heart for SOME remakes and reboots as not all of them suck, so I’m fully aware of the need for objectivity. Alas, the new international trailer has arrived ahead of the film’s September release just as the poster came several days ago. The first three films featuring Jason Statham showcased stylish action as its main centerpiece apart from the intricate car chases, so I’m really looking foward to what the fight sequences will look like. If actor Ed Skrein can deliver the same gravitas, then I’ll be behind this one for sure…until then, objectivity. SYNOPSIS: The producers of LUCY and the TAKEN trilogy bring you the next adrenaline-fueled installment of The Transporter series, THE TRANSPORTER REFUELED, starring newcomer Ed Skrein as FRANK MARTIN, […]
It must be no easy feat to be the only one left unaccounted for and having to take on four armed men in a cramped house where hiding is certainly no option. Such is the case for the latest role portrayed by actress Kaya Scodelario in Thomas Daley‘s new contained home invasion thriller, Tiger House, from a script by Simon Lewis that adds another suspenseful new venture into the genre with actors Dougray Scott and Ed Skrein lending their own cinematic villainy to the mix. SYNOPSIS: One fateful night, troubled teenager Kelly sneaks into her boyfriend Mark’s house to deliver some sobering news: she’s pregnant. But tonight, she’s not the only unwelcome visitor: an armed gang breaks in. Mark’s father Doug manages a cash depot and the gang plan on using Doug’s help to carry out a daring heist using his captive family as leverage. Their plan quickly unravels when […]
Actor Ed Skrein will be the next in line to share in the weight of producer Luc Besson’s Transporter franchise with the prequel trilogy starter, The Transporter Refueled. Time will tell, of course, if the Northmen: A Viking Saga, former Game Of Thrones co-star and co-star of upcoming home invasion thriller, Tiger House can maintain the fanfare under Brick Mansions helmer Camille Delamarre’s direction, but in the meantime, he’s since snagged himself a new role in 20th Century Fox’s live-action take on Marvel property, Daredevil. #deadpool #ajax pic.twitter.com/wfyRU9i9fV — Ed Skrein (@edskrein) April 7, 2015 SYNOPSIS: Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, DEADPOOL tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool […]
To be honest, I wasn’t too impressed with what was presented in the most recent trailer for director Camille Delamarre‘s The Transporter Refueled. For starters, the title sounds silly to me and I would have rather much preferred it keep its original ‘Legacy’ title or something more appealing. But apart from that, the trailer itself looks like a series of lessons unlearned from our dear director’s work on last year’s release of Brick Mansions. I couldn’t see the techniques and could only feel the choppy, rickety, Taken-style approach to the action as applied in part by Taken 2 co-star, fight choreographer Alain Figlarz, compared to the Hong Kong aesthetic established by Corey Yuen for the Jason Statham trilogy of yesteryear. Granted, I haven’t seen the film in its entirety, so further judgement will await until then, or at least until I’ve seen enough clips and trailers to have a broader […]
With great power, comes great irresponsibility. #deadpool #officialsuit @deadpoolmovie pic.twitter.com/MPM89bYz1B — Ryan Reynolds (@VancityReynolds) March 27, 2015 It’s been an electrifying time for the production of director Tim Miller‘s long-awaited feature Marvel adaptation, Deadpool from 20th Century Fox. Actor Ryan Renyolds finally debut the first official look of his titular character in the new film via Twitter this week in ceremonious fashion as things kick off for its release next year on February 12 with a script by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick which aims to revitalize the character in fresh form long after Renyolds debuted the unmasked role himself with action star Scott Adkins in Gavin Hood’s 2009 helmer, X-Men Orgins: Wolverine. There’s plenty more being planned for further advancement of the character with other projects in development, so fans will hopefully approve of what comes next, and it’s already looking up considering the positive reception from fans on […]
Let’s face it: There’ll be no shortage of criticism from here on out for director Camille Delamarre‘s latest remake effort, The Transporter Refueled, following last year’s Brick Mansions, unless this one manages to impress the fanbase. Actor Jason Statham made the previous trilogy what it is a deacade prior to its television pivot a few years ago with actor Chris Vance, which also garnered some positive reactions enough for two seasons. Nowadays, with remakes still a thing among studios, it’s up to actor Ed Skrein (Game Of Thrones) to take the wheel of this epic franchise on wheels and while he himself presents his own sense of gravitas here in the role of a younger Frank Martin in the new teaser, Skrein‘s got some big shoes to fill. For better worse, that day comes on June 19. SYNOPSIS: The producers of “Lucy” and the “Taken” trilogy bring you the next […]
Think what you will of actor Ed Skrein in place of Jason Statham for the upcoming trilogy reboot, The Transporter Legacy. Sure, it’s not Statham, but knowing promise in store for another actor to take the helm in a prequelized setting could open the floodgates for something fresh and even possibly better, particualrly for Skrein‘s career following his stint on Game Of Thrones. For this, we now learn that the actor is currently forging a path through talks with 20th Century Fox for the forthcoming first of the studio’s three planned X-Men universe movies for 2016, director Tim Miller‘s Deadpool, starring Ryan Renyolds. We also learn that Transformers: Age Of Extinction co-star T.J. Miller is up for a role, and while the details aren’t being made public just yet, report are already hinting that Skrein and Miller may be up for the respective villain and comedy roles, and some sites […]
There’s still plenty of time to speculate ahead of the March 6, 2015 release of the action-packed origin-centered thriller, The Transporter Legacy. It is the first step into a new trilogy with a new lead actor in the form of former Game Of Thrones co-star, actor Ed Skrein now taking the reigns of franchise character, Frank Martin, played previously by the incomparable Jason Statham, and of course, the fans will no doubt be critical. The film is the second remake effort from Brick Mansions helmer Camille Delamarre, focusing on Martin’s earlier years as a self-employed transporter-for-hire for any and all who could afford him, as well as abide by three main rules. What’s interesting here is that despite taking an origin-oriented approach, the story here will evidently see the character Martin, already in his element (somewhat indicated by previous set footage), which indicates that the new franchise won’t be straying […]
In case you’ve been living under a rock, production is currently underway for Transporter: Legacy, the first in a new trilogy from producers Luc Besson and Mark Gao since their mid-Cannes deal announcement last year. Following the previous trilogy with action star Jason Statham, the new trilogy kicks off with new male lead, former Game Of Thrones actor Ed Skrein in a younger iteration of the franchise protagonist, ex-soldier, underworld courier and mercenary, Frank Martin who is forced to help four women with a heist in order to save his kidnapped father from Russian human traffickers. The new film is being shot on-location in France where new French language-only set video is now available for viewing, courtesy of a new report from Culture Box. Skrein is joined by True Blood actress Gabriella Wright and A Good Day To Die Hard co-star Radivoje Bukvic, with actresses Loan Chabanol and Tatiana Pajkovic […]
Director Claudio Fäh‘s upcoming period epic, Northmen: A Viking Saga is still on track for an October premiere in Germany, with its newest poster now making the rounds within the last twenty-four hours. More dates are still pending, but the newest international trailer has also gone viral, with all the trimmings of what looks to be a spectacular flick. SYNOPSIS: In the 9th century a group of Vikings, commanded by captain Asbjörn, is approaching Britain, aiming to plunder the rich monasteries in the north of the island. But their ship gets caught in a storm and is smashed to pieces on the rocks off the coast of Scotland, the only part of Britain without any Viking settlements. When Inghean, daughter of the Scottish King Dunchaid, by chance falls into Viking hands, they see the opportunity for demanding a large ransom. King Dunchaid immediately sets his “wolfpack” – a group of […]
It might be an emotional process for The Expendables 3 co-star Jason Statham fans who have grown fond of the cockney-accented action cinema badass since leaving a hell of an impression in the first three films of Luc Besson’s Transporter saga began over a decade ago. However, the times have changed and with Statham moving on to other prospects, Besson and his company, so has Europacorp, after announcing its new production partnership with Shanghai-based Fundemental Films last year. Moviehole now reports this week that production has officially commensed on the new prequel trilogy rebooting The Transporter. Starring former Game Of Thrones co-star Ed Skrein whose attachment was announced back in February, the new film re-introduces its principle hero with a younger iteration of Frank Martin, who is forced to help four women with a heist in order to save his kidnapped father. Skrein is joined by True Blood actress Gabriella […]
Looking to make his transition from the theatre scene to film is director Thomas Daley for his newest action horror production, Tiger House. The latest reports mentioning the film are now hosting the first still of the film currently shooting in Cape Town, South Africa produced by Tiger House Films SA, and also marking the first production from Glass Man Films. Starring Skins actress Kaya Scodelario, Tiger House sets the story at a home in the U.K. where she plays Kelly, an injured gymnast who is ultimately forced to fight back after a gang of armed intruders force their way in and take her boyfriend and his family hostage. The film’s plot is already gaining recognition for bearing a resemblance to that of Adam Wingard’s recent theatrical release, You’re Next. , which could be a good thing Wingard’s film became a runaway smash hit earning well over $26 million dollars […]
