Calvin Tong’s crime thriller debut, The Trier Of Fact, has a first look trailer now online. The film rejoins Call Of Heroes actors Louis Koo and Eddie Peng, which is a bit of a facelift following its announcement in 2019 when Nick Cheung was cast at the time. The Trier Of Fact centers on a maverick detective named Che (Koo), and Guo (Peng) a crime division officer appointed by his superiors to assist him, as they pursue the criminal activities of a ruthless drug lord. At one point just when Che believes he’s reached the end of his investigation, he uncovers a new twist revealing Guo’s involvement. Koo’s sales outlet, One Cool Film, revealed the trailer and latest poster at FilMart on Monday which you can view below.

Are You Lonesome Tonight? is now available on Digital and VOD from Film Movement Filmmaker Wen Shipei was only one feature project in, having directed the Camera d’Or-nominated crime thriller, Are You Lonesome Tonight? I don’t know what that means for a lot of other critics or folks in film circles but I think it speaks volumes of a director’s ability to tell a story and other prospects looking forward. This one is set in 1990s Guangzhou when Wang Xueming (Eddie Peng), an AC repairman accidentally hits a pedestrian and drives off. Racked with guilt, he slowly encroaches on the goings-on of his widow, Mrs. Liang (Sylvia Chang) in a friendship that slowly materializes between awkward passerby moments coupled with acts by design on Wang’s part. The film takes a stark turn about halfway in when truths begin to unravel about the fateful evening, as dauntless detective Chen (Wang Yanhui) […]

HIDDEN MAN screens starting this Friday for the Toronto International Film Festival which kicks off on September 6 through 16.
With most of the specific plot details off the radar for Jiang Wen’s martial arts-infused spy pic, Hidden Man, its interesting trying to look up certain bits of China’s 20th century history. What we do know, however, is that it’s got a revenge twist that culminates a trilogy following Wen’s previous Gone With The Bullets and its 2010 predecessor Let The Bullets Fly. Alas, we now tackle the third entry as it’s loosely based on a novel written by Zhang Beihai. Wen himself is front and center for the cast with actors Eddie Peng, Liao Fan, and actress Zhou Yun and Summer Xu. A July 13 release hails from Gravity Pictures while later market news should see what becomes of its rollout following Warner Bros.’s co-production attachment to the film earlier this week. A new teaser is out as well and while it looks a bit more narrative rustic than […]
Sooner than the next Star Wars movie, news of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story co-star Jiang Wen’s latest return to the helm now sees Hidden Man emerging for a 2018 release. Adapted from Zhang Beihai’s own 1930s-set Wuxia novel and said to be the last installment of Jiang’s Bullets trilogy, the finale tells of a swords who returns home as a spy to avenge the death of his family. The teaser now running online is certainly brisk and slickly delivered for its desired affect and bet that action fans will gravitate around this one as soon as it releases in full with Eddie Peng and Liao Fan, and actresses Summer Xu and Zhou Yun also starring. The film itself has been a long time coming and available headlines indicates a casting change which should make this a bit more intriguing. Take a look!

Actor Eddie Peng’s latest wartime drama, Our Time Will Come, is currently readying for its day at the Shanghai International Film Festival. The event kicks off on June 18 ahead of its July 1 release, preceding as one of two Peng-starrers for the month with the other boding an impressive display of folkloric live-action spectacle. The film, Wukong, opens on July 13 with Peng in the title role and inspired by pen-named author Jin Zehai’s 2000 novel. Also starring are actor Shawn Yue and actresses Ni Ni and Zheng Shuang with Oho Ou, Qiao Shan, Faye Yu and Di Yang with a story that sets our titular warrior and other combatants in the Heaven school with our named King now staking his claim in full royal garb in the official trailer below. Not for nothing either, as far as ambition goes. We’re already finishing a seperate trilogy but if you […]
You don’t need to look too hard to see how much has amassed in film and TV over the legendary “Journey To The West” story and its foremost character, Sun Wukong. The last several years have shown ample box office success in adapting the character, something that director Derek Kwok is now keen on with Wukong, inspired by pen-named author Jin Zehai’s 2000 novel. Wukong, born in Huaguo Mountain, has a heart of stone. Ji Hua, a powerful general from the heaven was going to terminate him. But Wukong was rescued by Bodhi and became his pupil. Jian Yang, was given an opportunity to become a strong god, but he needs to kill Zixia, the daughter of the Heaven Emperor’s rival, who he is in love with. Tianpeng, Ji Hua’s bodyguard, was given the secret order to investigate Wukong. All three of them entered the Heaven school together, and their lives […]
Acclaimed director Dante Lam’s 2016 action thriller, Operation Mekong, was not without it’s share of interesting dialogue regarding its subject matter. Its ripped-from-the-headlines narrative centered on the 2011 incident that occurred along the Mekong river involving a criminal drug ring in Myanmar, otherwose serving as the premise for another hopeful entertaining hit at the box office. And so it was as it became one of the highest grossing films in China at the time, and with North America in its sites, the film has officially landed at its new home at Well Go USA. Release dates are announced for May 2 on Digital HD, and on Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack & DVD on June 6 with the artwork seen just below. Amazon.com already had pre-orders up and running so have at it! PLANO, TEXAS. (April 24, 2017) – “… for action film buffs, Christmas has come early” (Edmund Lee, South China […]
Between 2014 up to now, actor Eddie Peng has become someone I can appreciate. His most recent stint in Rise Of The Legend drew my praise as one of the best and most undeservedly undercelebrated martial arts movies by far and his body of work continues to grow with the upcoming fantasy epic, The Tales Of Wukong, inspired obviously by the titular Chinese mythic folk hero of legend, The Monkey King. Derek Kwok sits at the helm this time around, taking cues from pen-named author Jin Zehai’s 2000 novel which sees the story of three people on their way to heaven’s school for their own purposes; Three characters serving centrally to the film’s main narrative which will obviously encompass Peng’s portrayal of the very royalty he becomes, imbued further with the power of the legendary staff that glows at the end of the first teaser we saw several months ago […]
It’s been over a year since intial news broke on the production Derek Kwok’s latest, Wu Kong. Kwok’s previous work with Stephen Chow on the 2013 hit, Journey To The West: Conquering The Demons, surely makes him a well suited pick to sit in the director’s chair in this particular category of folklore, adding to the freshness even further with actor Eddie Peng given his revitalizing performance as Wong Fei-Hung in the revitalizing Rise Of The Legend. Here, he claims the title role for Kwok’s take inspired by pen named author Jin Zehai’s 2000 novel joining Peng with Invisible Target and Wild City co-star Shawn Yue’s role as fellow mythical mainstay, Erlang Shen, and actresses Ni Ni and Zheng Shuang. The film’s first teaser is here ahead of its July 13, 2017 release in China and right off the bat, you can already tell this will be a much more […]
I sat down to Call Of Heroes eager to see the action direction from legendary film star Sammo Hung. And let it be a testament to bloated expectations that about twenty minutes in, I thought I was going to be disappointed. Allow me to explain. It’s the thing with wuxia for me, fantasy based martial arts that succeeds or fails like the extremes of a pendulum. It’s either choreographed so well that it’s awesome, or it reaches the level of standard and, sadly, you are made so uncomfortably aware of wires and post production work that the crew might as well be on camera in the scene. Call Of Heroes threatened, at first, to arrive like the infamous latter. I remember liking Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword Of Destiny much more than the first one (and probably because of the welcome absence of scenes like the tree “fight” notable much […]
If there were ever an actor worthy of big screen appeal as a villain, instantly it would be actor Louis Koo as the heinous, murdering son of a General in Benny Chan’s latest home release prospect, Call Of Heroes. Action legend Sammo Hung himself directed the action headlining the riveting drama telling of a group of skilled warriors uniting against a coming threat with actors Eddie Peng, Wu Jing, Sean Lau and Liu Kai Chi delivering even more of the film’s best performances. My personal favorite action scene takes place in the second half which takes place on a bridge – a scene also exemplary of how to design action to permeate around the drama, lending further weight and credit to the film’s overall story and script. These are just a few points I’ll leave off here about the film for you to mull over while I’m more than pleased […]
Beast Stalker and Unbeatable helmer, acclaimed filmmaker Dante Lam’s career is certainly a mixed bag for some as of late. His most recent affair will hit screens in Asia on October 6 with the new action thriller, Operation Mekong and it certainly doesn’t hold back on spectacular action as far as I’m concerned, although that leaves much else to be determined for the rest of the film despite some of its best efforts. SYNOPSIS: Inspired by the true story of a merchant vessel operating in the Mekong River Delta in 2011 that was attacked by bandits leaving 13 people dead. Chinese authorities team up with police forces from Thailand, Laos and Myanmar to launch an investigation into the incident when a massive stash of drugs is found on board. Eddie Peng and Zhang Hanyu star. The latest trailer is online courtesy of Distribution Workshop and you can view it below!
