el Rey network
Austin, TX and Hong Kong – July 28, 2014 – El Rey Network (El Rey), maverick filmmaker Robert Rodriguez’s new genre-busting cable network, and Celestial Pictures Limited (Celestial Pictures) announced today a long-term programming partnership. The new five-year deal begins October 1, 2014, extending and expanding on an existing program licensing agreement. The new deal will provide the network with access to 255 iconic martial arts titles from the Shaw Brothers vault – the world’s leading martial arts collection, many on an exclusive basis. Financial terms were not disclosed. The parties are also in discussion on new original programming concepts.
Matador chronicles the unlikely rise of Tony “Matador” Bravo (Gabriel Luna), a popular soccer star who comes to be known as much for his playboy antics off the field as his dynamic moves on it. But what his fans and family don’t realize is that it’s all a cover—in truth, he is a skilled covert operative executing missions for a little-known branch of the CIA. “Matador” has the kind of fame and notoriety that affords him access to powerful circles of corruption and villainy. But, in balancing the dueling roles in which he’s been cast, he will be forced to confront the question of his true identity… and it is this mission which will prove to be his most dangerous.
The series is executive produced by Rodriguez who directed the pilot, and also executive produced by Alex Kurtzman and the newly announed Star Trek 3 helmer, Robert Orci, as well as Dan Dworkin and Andrew Orci who created the series with Jay Beattie; Entertainment One will handle the show’s international distribution.
Multifaceted film director and cult cinema icon Robert Rodriguez continues his momentum this year with the forthcoming release of Sin City 2: A Dame To Kill For, and the diversified programming to be featured on his new television platform, El Rey Network, headlined by the March 11 airing of From Dusk Til Dawn: The Series. Time will tell if the new show proves to be a success as it takes a prequelized approach following the cult success of the 1996 feature thriller on which the show is based, while the network also ramps up efforts to assemble another exciting new action adventure series in the form of Matador, from executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, and newly starring actor Gabriel Luna and actress Nicky Whelan.
Reports are saying plans are now underway for the network to begin airing Shaw Brothers martial arts titles, following a multi-year deal with Hong Kong-based distribution company, Celestial Pictures. The films, to be varied between English-subs and dubbed tracks and as per El Rey’s monthly Saturday Kung Fu marathon, namely include The 36th Chamber Chamber Of Shaolin, The Eight Diagram Pole Fighter and Executioners From Shaolin – three popular collaborations between legendary film actors Gordon Liu and the late Lau Kar-Leung, along with the 1975 Chen Kuen-Tai actioner, The Flying Guillotine and the 1968 flick, The Sword Of Swords starring Jimmy Wang Yu.
Deadline is reporting that a new announcement has been made for a new partnership between Univision Networks and FactoryMade for an upcoming Comcast cable network headed by filmmaker Robert Rodriguez called The El Rey Network. At an event in New York City on Tuesday, Rodriguez told the public “The El Ray Network is going to be the home of kick-ass entertainment,”
