White Guy Gets Beat Up By Asians!!!
…Well, at least not right away, and that is actually the central theme of the latest video from the gang over at EMC Monkeys titled Crazy White People, with comedic performances by instigatory white guy Robert Dill, and our principle quartet of Asian lookalikes, Malay Kim, Tony Sre, Johnny Yang and Xin Wuku. Watch it below, and remember to subscribe to their official Facebook page and keep up with their daily misadventures in kung fu, film, and other monkey business.
What is Project: THRONE?
…That is the question, and it’s a pretty simple one, although very, VERY little is being willfully said about it since its conception earlier on. For now though, what we can go by is the information currently on display at its official Facebook page, including key names and companies, a very slow feed of stills, and a description that goes a little something like this:
“THRONE” is the an epic, action-adventure film from Halvon Corps. Entertainment, PMV Entertainment (“JumpStart the Movie”), and the producers who brought you “Violence” and “Insecurity”!
“THRONE” has an insanely talented international cast and crew led by Aaron Toney (“Gaurdians of the Galaxy”), James Young (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier”), & Brendon Huor (“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”). And it features the amazingly creative talents from EpicRival, Thousand Pounds Action Company, LBP Stunts Chicago, 87Eleven Action Design, EMC Monkeys, & Flow (just to name a few)!

If you follow my site and happen to be a devout fan of independent film and action cinema, you’ll likely recognize the names mentioned above, like Hollywood stuntman Aaron Toney, who is directing this project. And it makes sense that Toney is the one sitting in the director’s chair considering how much talent he sees and appreciates among professional performers, something he expressed in a special exclusive interview with our own Darren Bailey earlier this year. “I’ve seen nothing but good things come from people like The Stunt People, Thousand Pounds, EMC, Lazy Brown Productions…all these guys are top notch, …which is why I like working with all you guys.” he said. “You do some of your best work with independent, like-minded people.”
Needless to say, these like minds are keeping extra quiet about this little upcoming gem, and perhaps rightfully so, seeing as how awesome this project is already looking. So, indeed, no spoilers or clues just yet, but by all means, do the sensible thing and follow Project: THRONE on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and watch this space for more news!

EMC Monkeys Presents: LUCKY STRIKE
Imagine, if you will, if you took all or as many ingredients of the average Quentin Tarantino film, and crammed it as much of it as possible into a nifty little online action shortfilm. Ask yourself, how much do you think you could replicate some of that visual filmic magic? Some might imagine it as pretty challenging, but not indie filmmaker and action actor Robert Dill. He’s taking on that formula and applying it to his craft with his fellow members of the EMC Monkeys for their latest love letter to the Kill Bill and Resevoir Dogs helmer in the new shortfilm, Lucky Strike.
Dill, an up-and-coming film professional since around 1999, eventually found himself adding stuntwork to his repetoire, performing for various award shows and dinners with EMC by 2008, all in the course of pursuing a career in film and television. After spending a little more time behind the camera for the past few years, for Dill, a comeback was necessary, which begs the question: Why Tarantino?
“In all his films, Tarantino always has the quirky, sort of silly sense of humor about everything,” he says. “It’s like he and his films never take themselves very seriously at all. Almost to say ‘Yeah, we all know this is bullshit, so lets just make sure we’re both clear on the subject’ [laughs]. I thought that would be really fun to emulate that a bit, by having a serious situation feel almost ridiculous even though it’s clearly very serious, and somehow beautiful at the same time, with music and cinematography and other things.”.
Watching this, I could only imagine how A Band Apart would have interpreted this exact kind of scenario with the same performers. It’s experimental at best, but you can definitely hear that playful seriousness in the overall tone, creativity, and timing of the dialogue, as well as the action and editing in between.

Well played, Malay…well played.

EMC Channels Gareth Evans For The New Fan Fight Short, THE RAID: EMC RENDITION
In the final hours on the eve of the official limited premiere of acclaimed producing/writing/directing powerhouse Gareth Evans’s new film, The Raid 2, the team over at EMC Monkeys have put out something very special to mark the occasion in the form of their own special independent fan contribution simply titled The Raid: EMC Rendition. Shot in the course of three days, the new short is just one of several, highly popular contributions to Evans’ vision within the last few years, most recently preceded by the stellar efforts of independent filmmaker Vlad Rimburg for his inspired short, Hammer Girl.
This time, we are re-introduced to the screenfighting presence of fellow stuntman and action actor, Bryan Sloyer, who has been making some exceptional headway in the world of indie action this year. Sloyer joins longtime EMC member, Tony Sre who choreographed and directed the piece. And what we get is not only a fight sequence that bares some very memorable attributes to the signature movements seen in the original film’s principal martial arts system of Silat, but also manages to capture the spirit of the action with some of its camera work in accordance with some of the choreography.
In essence, this is another exceptional, spiritual tribute to both The Raid, and its new sequel, especially since none of the filmmakers involved here have seen the film yet. Moreover, this latest gem is also proof that the EMC Monkeys is one team of professionals that knows what it is doing and knows just how to do it. And in my humble opinion, if angel investor were to come by and give these guys a pat ok the back with one hand and an some substantially extra pocket change to work with in the other, I wouldn’t protest. And I’m hard-ressed to believe most action fans would.

Reel Time: MALAY KIM (2014)
Film Combat Syndicate has had the pleasure of hosting some truly stunning work from the folks over at cinematic action performance and choreography team, EMC Monkeys in the past year, and it’s really a small list in comparison to the amount of achievements they have made since their earlier years in activity long before this site existed. A lot of that work includes a list of admirable performances by fellow member Malay Kim, who has brand new reel out which features both old and new projects that are coming online very soon.
The team has left a major mark on the industry for fans online over the last few years, particularly with one of thier most successful videos to date attributed to the hit game, Sleeping Dogs in 2012, in which by an act of otherwise random chance, a segment of choreography became the center of attention upon the recent release of director Isaac Florentine’s latest hit film, Ninja: Shadow Of A Tear. Of course, the comparison was noticeable in similarity, but nonetheless, the team is taking it all in stride, and hopes to spark a meeting of minds one great day with the film’s pivotal action director and rising star in choreography, Tim Man.
Just think of the possibilities, kids.
Kim has a few more videos lined up that will be coming out real soon this year, including two upcoming tributes to the latest Donnie Yen cop thriller, Special ID with fellow actor and Fight Factory performer Michael Lehr, and the classic SNK fighting game, King Of Fighters, as well as an upcoming Power Rangers fan film titled Unmorphed, and Lethal Weapon 6 – a follow up to their 2012 Nerf-weaponized action vid, Lethal Weapon 5.

AROUND THE WEB: Super Mario Vs. Link, Second Chances And Fighting Social Networking Distractions
Three new spectacular action shorts made their way online this week, and for this, we have to thank the participants of independent film groups, the California-based teams EMC Monkeys and SubOverHype, Canada’s own Yung Lee of GakAttack.
The first features a brand new interpretive comedic action short titled Live Action Super Mario vs Link, with EMC member Xin Wuku back as a fired-up Super Mario opposite actor Johnny Yang as the classic Legend Of Zelda character, Link, with a special (royal) appearance by Thousand Pounds Action Company’s own, actress Amy Johnston, as the captive princess waiting for her rescue…but from which hero? Check it out!
The second brings our friends from SubOverHype back to the screen in a dramatic new skit titled Second Chances. Written by Laura Brooks and co-writer and director Caine Sinclair, their new situational drama shares an artful, surreal look at conflicting situations, rendering the finale with a noteworthy reflection on starting over. It’s one of their more darker-toned pieces and shows just how good these up-and-coming folks are at what they do, in designing drama and action with a cinematic message. Watch actor Solomon Brende and actress Ashley Dianne Currie in the new short, featuring stunt action by Noah Fleder, Alvin Hsing, Kyle McClean, Jimmy Chiuu, Vanessa Zamarippa, and Sarah “Smac” Macreanor.
Last but not least, it is Yung Lee‘s newest shortfilm titled Fighting Social Media Distractions, double-teaming with fellow screenfighter, actress Wei-Hsin Lee who you may remember from the summer short film sequel from Eclipse Stunts, Hallowed 2. It features both actors taking on a live-action battlefront of social media bombardments performed by Justin Howell as Facebook, and Tally Rodin as YouTube, and caters to the usual signature quirky humor and comedic timing that Yung Lee has become so good at in his videos. Take a look below and enjoy!

The Future Is On Fire In The New Action Short, BLOOD DRAGON: THE CYBER WAR
Well, this was a pleasant piece of film to wake up to! I’m not totally endowed in knowledge about videogames, but that doesn’t stop Corridor Digital’s latest collaborative project from looking as ridiculously and unapologetically AWESOME as it does.
