Principal photography commenced in Atlanta, Georgia on Monday this week for the new sequel, Escape Plan 2 which currently has actor Sylvester Stallone reprising his role from the 2014 hit movie from director Mikael Hafstrom. Extraction and Marauders helmer Steven C. Miller is directing from a script by Miles Chapman and while plot details remain pending, casting did make other confirmations in the previous week in which Dave Bautista was also confirmed. For this, we have news from Deadline as of several days ago that actor Wes Chatham has been cast in the film as well with an undisclosed role. Chatham’s recent credits include recently renewed SyFy series, The Expanse, and films such as Jason Connery’s hard-hitting MMA action drama, The Philly Kid, Alfonso Gomez-Rejon’s Western thriller, The Town That Dreaded Sundown, and Lionsgate’s two-part Mockingjay finale of The Hunger Games. Following actor Sylvester Stallone’s confirmation for Escape Plan 2, The Tracking Board writes that Steven C. Miller has officially been tapped to direct the sequel. Miles Chapman, who wrote the first film is returning to script the second installment which will be co-produced and co-financed between Emmett/Furla/Oasis and Beijing-based Leomus Pictures. Plot details are unclear as is the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger pending talks to reprise his role next to Stallone as seen in the 2013 hit film directed by Mikael Håfström. Randall Emmett and George Furla are producing with Leomus CEO Jie Qiu and Mark Canton, Zack Schiller and Robbie Brenner. Executive producing are Ted Fox, Mark Stewart, Barry Brooker and Stan Wertlieb with The Fyzz Facility’s Wayne Marc Godfrey and Robert Jones. The jury is still out on the otherwise confirmed fourth Expendables movie that will see just some of Hollywood’s mightiest action heroes reprising their roles from the trilogy, including Sylvester Stallone. In the meantime, there is at least one other title well on the way following last year’s reporting on Chinese co-production attachments to a sequel to the 2013 hit, Escape Plan, announced next to another installment of the Now You See Me franchise for Lionsgate. Still in search of a director, Escape Plan 2, was last reported for a production start between a few weeks ago through March, although this week’s reporting from THR might suggest different. It was last reported back in July that Lionsgate was up for advancing a sequel to the 2013 hit action film, Mikael Håfström’s Escape Plan. That film was led in a two-hander between cinematic action movie legends Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger which grossed $137 million globally, and the update at the time also gave mention to the possibility of it being a Chinese co-production. That detail still appears correct according to the latest update at Deadline which officially confirms the sequel now greenlit for production next year from Emmett/Furla/Oasis Films with Lionsgate Premiere handling its release. ESCAPE PLAN 2, Chinese NOW YOU SEE ME Spinoff In The Works At Lionsgate

Reports are now coming out that plans are under way for a Chinese spin-off of the hit heist franchise, Now You See Me in the wake of its sequel which opened in June. The film is one of two titles in a new co-production deal between the film’s studio, Lionsgate, and Beijing-based Leomus Pictures. “We’re working closely with Lionsgate on the story,” Leomus Pictures CEO Jie Qiu tells THR. “And a Hollywood writer will be involved to make sure the spinoff is aligned with the Now You See Me franchise and has the same level of quality.” The move was reportedly off-set by the success of the Hollywood sequel in China surrounding a quintet of magicians forced into a battle of wits and tricks with a villanous tech wizard.
