Netflix has cast Juju Chan and Mark Dacascos to its cadre of martial arts badasses for Netflix series WU ASSASSINS starring Iko Uwais
Is it me? Or does Mark look more and more like he needs more sleep? Word is that he needed some serious coffee rounds in order to stay “lit” on the set of his newest action thriller, Mile 22. It’s worth reiterating, however, that in all likelihood I’ll be seeing this in support of its biggest action star on set: Iko Uwais. The guy has several films rolling out before 2019 (including Timo Tjahjanto’s feature directing debut/Fantastic Fest pick, The Night Comes For Us) and Peter Berg’s newest endeavor from STX Entertainment is one of them as of the next few weeks The new featurette delves right into the nitties and gritties of the Indonesian import whose stardom in the care of filmmaker Gareth Huw Evans broke ground from 2009 to date. With Mile 22 serving as the start of a potential franchise, I’m seriously hoping this film gets it […]
Need a little something to tie you down until the release of Timo Tjahjanto’s The Night Comes For Us?… Good, so do I. Per my own fandom toward martial arts star Iko Uwais, I’m looking forward to the release of Peter Berg’s new action thriller, Mile 22. Mark Wahlberg leads the cast and that he’s there to put a face to a potential franchise launcher is nice and all, but if I’m being frank, just give me more Iko and I’ll be on my way. And possibly some more Ronda too? That’d be nice! In a visceral modern thriller from the director of Lone Survivor, Mark Wahlberg stars as James Silva, an operative of the CIA’s most highly-prized and least-understood unit. Aided by a top-secret tactical command team, Silva must retrieve and transport an asset who holds life-threatening information to Mile 22 for extraction before the enemy closes in.
If you don’t believe in the afterlife and are a fan of Iko Uwais, count your amazing ass blessings! Right now! ‘Tis a mere matter of months until Mile 22 rolls out in theaters ahead of a likely VoD/streaming release for The Night Comes For Us and what lies ahead for Triple Threat – all of which are credits shared by the Indonesian actor and martial arts star, among others. As it stands, he’s already wrapped up a couple of films and now he’s off to service with a cast and crew slowly assembling for Netflix martial arts drama, Wu Assassins, from creators Tony Krantz of Flame Ventures (24), John Wirth (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles; Falling Skies) and Nomadic Pictures (Fargo, Hell on Wheels). It’s another Uwais headliner with 10 episodes to its order Byron Mann (Altered Carbon) co-starring. The show is set in San Francisco’s Chinatown and is described as […]
STXfilms is only a month and a half away from the hopeful launch of a new action franchise of their own in Peter Berg’s latest, Mile 22. The first trailer released back in May and I kind of feel that it fell short of how resonant it might have felt had it not been toned to feel “cool” rather than foreboding and reverent in promoting an action film. If that’s the case then I don’t really know if the upcoming sequel that was announced on Wednesday – with Umair Aleem penning the script – will actually have any life. All else aside, we now have a new Red-Band trailer that puts a little more effort into its introduction to the masses this time around, and plentily with Iko Uwais getting some sick work done as our martial arts action centerpiece. In a visceral modern thriller from the director of Lone […]
UFC champ-turned-actress and WWE star Ronda Rousey may have had a hell of an uphill climb in the last several years, but she’s proven her resilience along with her filmic potential since breaking out in 2014’s The Expendables 3. Her fruition also comes in parallel to the international success seen by actor and martial artist Iko Uwais (Beyond Skyline) since emerging in under the auspices of Gareth Huw Evans nearly a decade ago and flourishing toward a bigger career to date. For this and apart from being a fan of the genre their talents are relatively attributed to, I couldn’t be more proud, nor excited for the upcoming theatrical release of STXfilms’ new franchise hopeful, Mile 22. Both aforementioned cast members join the committed actor/director partnership that is actor Mark Wahlberg and Peter Berg who are now five years-strong in their four-for-four collaboration that also bears the potential for a […]
I’ve been waiting with baited breath for something to surface for Mile 22 and we finally have our first glimpse of the action with an official poster. Fandango bared the key art via social media hailing the return of Mark Wahlberg to the big screen on August 3 with a cast that includes Ronda Rousey and international action star Iko Uwais. The film was written by Graham Roland and Lea Carpenter and tells the story of an elite American intelligence officer who, when aided by a top-secret tactical command unit, tries to smuggle a mysterious police officer with sensitive information out of a foreign country. Also starring are John Malkovich and Lauren Cohan, and all the hard-hitting action and thrills one might hope for between now and its forthcoming VR tie-in, The Kiev Exchange, arriving on STXsurreal later this year. Check out the ink below and stay tuned for a […]
Indonesian action star, actor Iko Uwais is continually rising to the occasion these last several years. His latest stake in Beyond Skyline put him on par for further profusion in film and it now has him on deck to join actor Dave Bautista and title star, actor and comedian Kumail Nanjiani for upcoming action comedy, Stuber, for 20th Century Fox. Details on Uwais’s role remains pending per Patrick Hipes’s exclusive at Deadline which confirms it as so. Michael Dowse is directing the film from a spec script by Tripper Clancy which centers on Bautista as a tenacious detective who commandeers an unsuspecting Uber and its driver, played by Nanjiani, over one night of high jinks and mayhem. Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley are producing the film with Jake Wagner serving ad executive producer and Jeremy Kramer is overseeing for Fox. The film adds to Uwais’s career which has been […]
Ronda Rousey’s career with the WWE remains pending following recent headlines. In the meantime, she’s got goals set in cinema and with none other than director Peter Berg and a rousing list of heavy hitters for potential franchise vehicle, Mile 22. ComingSoon.net reports that production on the new action thriller which also headlines Mark Wahlberg and international superstar Iko Uwais, has wrapped principal photography following shoots in Atlanta, GA and Bogota, Colombia. A newly announced theatrical rollout has been set for July 20, 2018 from STXfilms while the studio further preps for a multiplatform STX release via STXtv and STXsurreal VR, as well as a sequel. Mile 22 marks the fourth collaboration between Berg and Wahlberg after Patriots Day, Deepwater Horizon and Lone Survivor. Written by Graham Roland and Lea Carpenter, the film centers on an elite American intelligence officer who, when aided by a top-secret tactical command unit, tries […]
Photo: Mike Selby If all goes as expeditious as planned, stunt multi-hyphenate Jesse V. Johnson’s latest contribution with all-star Asian headliner, Triple Threat, should see a release midway this year. Post-production still remains pending completion for the new action thriller written by Joey O’Bryan and Paul Staheli, and filmed early last year and with fans pining for Johnson’s latest exciting follow-up to this week’s release of Accident Man, I managed to touch base with Mike Selby, manager to one of the film’s leads – action star Tony Jaa. It was Selby, who served as one of the producers as he did on Skin Trade, Jaa’s 2015 two-hander with action heavy-hitter Dolph Lundgren opposite Ron Perlman and Michael Jai White, who aided us in getting in touch with his client for an in-depth interview several years ago. At the time, he and I chatted and I made a passing mention about […]
The Greg and Colin Strause-directed, independent 2010 critical sci-fi flop, Skyline, left a huge enough dent in box office earnings to warrant some wiggle room for a sequel. Enter Liam O’Donnell, having worked his way up from VFX work on several projects, as well as co-scripting and producing the first film and now sets his sights with a sequel as his directorial debut in Beyond Skyline – a film that by some accounts probably wasn’t expected to happen or even supposed to. It had been four years since the first film and so no one would see an announcement up until 2014, surprising everyone curious and keen, and not for nothing either. The added touch of throwing in people like Iko Uwais and Yayan Ruhian would certainly pepper the hype up to a certain degree for fans fond of their work on Merantau, The Raid and it’s sequel; The mere […]
I’m absolutely fired up about the release of Beyond Skyline… except in the states there won’t be a theatrical release, apparently. Instead, Lionsgate will be rolling out the hit sci-fi sequel on DVD, Blu-Ray and VoD on January 16, 2018 in North America, pretty much crusing any of my pre-ordained hopes and dreams amid my own reporting… Fuck. Anyway, I reviewed this bastard (check back December 11) and while I won’t be including this in any of my current Five-A-Day articles which I don’t feel like re-editing since I’m currently getting over being sick and the task itself is just damn tiresome, I’m happy to be lending this one with some lip service in the coming weeks. I dug the crud out of this film and I honestly want more after this. Plotwise, sans the 2010 fumble from the Strause sibs, VFX artist Liam O’Donnell presses on here with actor […]

There’s nothing new about the latest trailer for Liam O’Donnell’s new sci-fi action adventure, Beyond Skyline. What has changed, thusfar, is the addition of a theatrical release date now set for December 15 from Vertical Entertainment, so if you live in the states and you’re pining for some cult action and fantasy fandom with Frank Grillo and Iko Uwais in the spotlight, best check your local listings. Taking its cues from INDEPENDENCE DAY, ALIENS and DIE HARD, the film is a fantastic crowd-pleasing fusion of epic sci-fi, alien horror and hardcore action. When his son gets abducted by a terrifying alien mothership that’s covered the Los Angeles skyline, a tough-as-nails cop (THE PURGE’s Frank Grillo) embarks on a relentless journey to rescue him and defeat the vicious extraterrestrial invaders. Joining him in the fight are the stars of THE RAID Iko Uwais and Yayan Ruhian, who also acted as fight […]
Signature Entertainment has dibs for the upcoming U.K. release of Liam O’Donnell’s long-awaited sci-fi sequel, Beyond Skyline. A Digital HD release is in tow for December 15 followed by Blu-Ray and DVD on January 8, 2018 while the best and earliest place UK fans can screen the film will be at the Horror Channel Fright Fest on October 28, provided that tickets are still available! In the highly-anticipated sequel to the 2010 breakout blockbuster hit SKYLINE, tough-as-nails detective Mark (THE PURGE star Frank Grillo) embarks on a relentless pursuit to free his embittered rebellious son Trent (INSURGENT/ALLEGIANT star Johnny Weston) from a nightmarish alien warship as the extraterrestrial menace continues its human harvest. Set concurrently with the original sci-fi shocker, with Mark and Trent trapped on a subway train as the intergalactic invasion begins, THE RAID franchise martial arts star Iko Uwais joins the thrilling turbo-charged action adventure as a […]
July was a great month to be a martial arts fan with all the excuse in the world to repeat-watch the comic-con teaser trailer for the new martial arts thriller, Triple Threat. Of course, critical results are pending but the trailer ponies up everything you could want in a movie of its genre with Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais and Tiger Chen leading the cast and Savage Dog helmer Jesse V. Johnson directing. The movie opens in 2018 with plans for a sequel already underway and Well Go USA has already snagged first dibs on the upcoming ensemble action pic. That leaves off a number of territories to be accounted for which brings us to Screendaily‘s exclusive on Monday for the U.S. based company to release the film in the U.K. and Australia as well, in addition to the following locations: Germany (Koch), Latin America (Swen), Italy (Movies Inspired), Portugal (Cinemundo), […]
If last week’s trailer reveal for Liam O’Donnell’s new sci-fi, Beyond Skyline wasn’t enough, a second trailer has arrived for your viewing pleasure ahead of its upcoming releases. This one delves more into the story and crux of the character played by Frank Grillo who lands in Indonesia at somepoint amid the invasion. Among our characters, we meet the role played by actress Bojana Novakovic, as well as the image of a young girl who turns out to be the subject of the dialogue as some kind of “key”. This, next to the story of a cop trying to rescue his son from an alien ship just adds more stakes to take in…and from O’Donnell’s own script at that. Topping it all off course is some tasty action shots featuring Iko Uwais and Yayan Ruhian, adding further excitment to the film’s push. It comes out in November in Indonesia with […]
The past few years have been a vigorous tug-and-pull over just how long it would be before actor and martial artist Iko Uwais would see a more principal role than in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Landing a more definitive English speaking line in this year’s thriller, Headshot, was just another layer on the waiting cake added until more time passed until now, with actor Frank Grillo front and center with the cast that outlines the first of possible prospects to come between two actors who’ve gotten their start in different markets. I speak of prospects with a certain action crime saga remake in mind, but in the good name of staying on topic, let’s bring things back into focus. For this, we now turn to the long-awaited first official teaser trailer for the new sci-fi thriller, Beyond Skyline from writer/producer/director Liam O’Donnell who served on the first film from […]
