HOLLYWOOD, CA (October 20, 2015) – Paramount Pictures and Skydance Media today announced that principal photography has commenced on “JACK REACHER: NEVER GO BACK,” starring Tom Cruise (the “MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE” franchise, “EDGE OF TOMORROW”) and directed by Edward Zwick (“THE LAST SAMURAI,” “BLOOD DIAMOND”).
The opening weekend box office success of Christopher MacQuarrie’s latest, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, has done quite the justice for actor Tom Cruise. As such, the floodgates have further opened on the possible reprisal of a few of the actor’s recent roles in films like the live-action anime adaptation, Edge Of Tomorrow, and a sequel to his 2012 book-based action suspense thriller, Jack Reacher 2.
The latter didn’t exactly do so well during its theatrical run with a domestic total of $80 million dollars under its belt, although grossing $138 million abroad earnings reportedly became a huge help. For this, talk of a sequel has kept things simmering, and now word from THR writes that the film is set to begin shooting this November, reunitng Cruise with The Last Samurai helmer Ed Zwick in the director’s chair.
The 2012 film, inspired by Lee Child’s ninth installation of the titular book series, “One Shot”, published in 2005, was directed by MacQuarrie and focused on Reacher as he is swept into a conspiracy involving the murder of five people. The new film is said to be adapting the eighteenth book in the series, “Never Go Back”, with Reacher resigned to using his cunning and brute force upon returning to his old military base when his dinner date is arrested and he’s mysteriously charged with pummeling a guy and fathering a child.
Paramount and Skydance are positioning the film for a late 2016 release while Cruise completes his latest crime pic, Mena, with Edge Of Tomorrow helmer director Doug Liman directing, and plans a summer shoot for the sixth installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise. Stay tuned!
Fans of director Christopher McQuarrie’s 2012 thriller, Jack Reacher, can look forward to a sequel as of just a few years ago, and its lead star, actor Tom Cruise is set to reprise the role. McQuarrie directed the first film and has since been too tied up in finishing Cruise’s forthcoming Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, as of last September.
Fortunately though, progress has been made as Paramount and Skydance have been moving forward for a second installation of author Lee Child’s book franchise. The word from Deadline is that acclaimed director Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz are tapped to rewrite Richard Wenk’s original draft with the goal of having Zwick direct. The first film is based on Child’ 2005 novel, “One Shot”, the ninth book in the series that features Cruise in McQuarrie’s film as a U.S. Army Military Homicide investigator caught in a conspiracy involving the murder of five people. The sequel will head directly into Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, based on the eighteenth book in the series published in 2013 which Reacher returns to his old base in Virgina and takes its commanding officer on a date, only himself at the center of another conspiracy after his date is arrested and he’s pummeling a guy and fathering a baby with another woman.
Zwick also directed Cruise in the 2003 period epic, The Last Samurai, as well as directed hits like Courage Under Fire and the time-honored cinematic Civil War masterpiece, Glory.
Cruise’s Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation releases this July.
Director Christopher McQuarrie is still in the process of directing Mission: Impossible 5, the latest installment of the title franchise with scribe Drew Pearce and lead actor Tom Cruise for its December 25, 2015. In the meantime, it appears that the two will not be partnering again for a second offering in the forthcoming Jack Reacher sequel from Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions, following its announcement late last year.
Empire spoke to author Lee Child whose 2005 novel, “One Shot”, inspired its live action iteration a few years ago in which Cruise plays a U.S. Army Military Homicide investigator caught in a conspiracy involving the murder of five people. “McQuarrie is going to be in post-production on Mission: Impossible 5,” says Child. “He just physically can’t do it. It’s going to be a new backroom crew, which I think is good. I thought the McQuarrie movie was fantastic, but let’s see someone else’s take on it.”.
“One Shot” is the ninth book in Child’s book series, and it turns out the sequel will head directly into Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, based on the eighteenth book in the series published last September. The sequel is currently awaiting script completion, but has a synopsis for the time being, via JoBlo:
