If you’re looking for some action to headline your weekend, you needn’t look further. Speed Dating, the new rom-com action thriller short from director Jean-Paul Ly who now takes his turn at the megaphone after turning in notable screen performances of his own in Jailbreak, Nightshooters and 400 Bullets to name a few. Eloise Lovell Anderson stars in the short piece which hails from Ly’s Bad Guys Films and bodes as a proof of concept for a hopeful feature film for Ly to one day make his debut at the helm. Michael Kodi Farrow, Rob Locke, Daniel Larkai, Mia Foo, Phoebe Robinson and Laurent Plancel also star, with action sequences by Ly and Plancel who’ve partnered on many an occasion prior, including the award-winning Jailbreak.
Speed Dating will premiere this Saturday, December 10 on YouTube, so follow Jean-Paul Ly on Instagram below ahead of its release. Actor and martial artist Jean-Paul Ly has worked on a number of shortfilm projects to top off his own film and television career over the years, enough to accrue the experience he needed to engage his latest shortfilm, Speed Dating. The project is billed as a proof of concept aimed at one day launching Ly’s own feature-length action comedy debut, which in turn would be amply prospective for the man best remembered for winning fans over with featured roles in Cambodian action comedy, Jailbreak, UK thriller Nightshooters, and even his previous collaborative short, The Division, with co-star and producer Laurent Plancel. Enter Emma (Eloise Lovell Anderson), coerced by roommate Katy (Mia Foo) into a reluctant speed-datenight after supposedly losing a bet, only to be resigned to a string of […]
FCSyndicate can debut the first look at official poster for Jailbreak star, actor and filmmaker Jean-Paul Ly’s new romantic action comedy short, Speed Dating, the latest creation out of JPL Films and Bad Guys Films following Ly’s 2018 thriller, “The Division”. The poster features actress Eloise Lovell Anderson (Villain, FX’s “The Bastard Executioner”), who trained for one month with Ly’s team prior to four daily production schedules a little over a year ago. Anderson stars as a secret agent whose latest side quest to find romance finds her sorely reminded that in her line of work, there are no days off. For Ly, it’s more than a proof of concept as it was also a vehicle to help elevate himself behind the lens, and explore a different side to filmmaking than what fans have grown used to considering his usual output (i.e. Jailbreak, Nightshooters, “Acéré”). To say the least though, […]
The wait is finally over as a new green-band trailer is now live Marc Price’s British black action comedy, Nightshooters. The film has finally scored a November 2 release on VOD from Indiecan, following its acquisition back in March after a run at the big screens back in late 2018 and onward to digital and disc releases in the UK in the following year. Nightshooters is the story of a group of filmmakers illegally shooting a low budget film in an abandoned office building slated for demolition. When they inadvertently witness and film a gangland execution in the opposite building, they have to use all their skills and wits to survive the night whilst being relentlessly pursued by the gang who are hellbent on not leaving any witness alive. Nightshooters stands as one of several titles elevating burgeoning action star Jean-Paul Ly since winning over audiences in Montreal for Cambodian action […]
It’s been a long time coming for Marc Price’s Nightshooters since its Raindance premiere and subsequent UK release a few years back, but word now brings that North American rights have landed at Canadian outlet, Indiecan for its release. Actor and rising fan favorite Jean-Paul Ly joins a headlining cast that lists Doug Allen, Wendy S. Glenn, Nick Aaron, Rosanna Hoult, Adam McNab and more for the rollicking story of a band of independent filmmakers forced to fight their way out of a condemned tower block one bustling night of filming after witnessing a gangland execution. The film also stars Nicky Evans, Kaitlyn Riordan, Richard Sandling, Mica Proctor and Karanja Yorke, and features signature fight choreography by Ly, best known for delivering the goods on thrillers like Cambodian milestone hit, Jailbreak and The Prey, as well as Ross Peacock’s new shortfilm hit, Acéré, with Law Plancel. Ly’s latest role can […]
If you’re a deep action aficionado like myself, who is appreciative of the introspection and analysis of the action genre, you should be familiar with the name Ross Peacock, aka Rossatron. His video essays on YouTube about Action Cinema are the finest you’ll ever see, I promise you. No one breaks down Action movies quite like Ross. But Ross has made it known that while he does enjoy making his video essays, his true love lies in filmmaking. And coupled with his expertise on Action, fans were salivating at the thought of what he could accomplish as a filmmaker. Well, ladies and gentlemen, we now have a glimpse of exactly that, as Ross has just released his debut as writer/director with Acéré. A man on the run. A villain with a knife. A fight to the death. This is Acéré (Sharpened to Kill). With Acéré (which means Sharp in french), […]
Hopefully you’ve been following filmmaker and YouTube VJ Ross Peacock’s endeavors via Instagram as he’s been coming together full circle with his newest shortfilm, Acéré. Production has long since wrapped many moons and months ago following a protocolled filming schedule by Peacock and producer Leopold Hughes (co-producer of Knives Out, associate producer of Star Wars: The Last Jedi), and just a few days from its online premiere, the official teaser is now online to help whet the appetite some. Following a man on the run (Jean-Paul Ly) hiding from a gang of trained killers, he comes to increasingly-bloody blows against the Terminator-like antagonist (Laurent Placel). We follow this desperate fight to the death, witnessing the carnage they wreak upon each other, toward a bloody climax that will leave viewers reeling. Recognize the names in the synopsis and you might remember previous shortfilm thrills such as Dead End and The Division, […]
Actor Jean-Paul Ly’s film career has been astonishing to witness and cover in the last six years or so. Having escalated from stunt performances and small acting roles to headling projects like Jailbreak and Nightshooters, the hope has always been to see him in an even bigger spotlight going forward. Par for the course is the prospect of working with different directors. Black Site and Black Ops helmer Tom Paton often vies for a more dark and brooding appeal in his work, and this particularly goes for his new standoff thriller, 400 Bullets, boasting what reads like an exciting premise akin to the kind of classic action films fans are keen on: Heroes who are outnumbered and outgunned and have no choice to fight to survive. Casting Andrew Lee Potts to kick things off, the film slowly ramps up to the first climatic moment our intial protagonist, military captain Noah, […]
Leave it to the gang at Shout! Studios to bring what looks to be a formidable early 2021 star for U.K. film star Jean-Paul Ly (Jailbreak, Nightshooters) in Black Ops helmer Tom Paton’s latest, 400 Bullets. Shout just released the official trailer which you can view above, and with pre-orders now up for grabs at Shoutfactory.com ahead of its March 2 VOD, Digital, Blu-ray and DVD release. Read on! Get ready to jump into action this spring. Highly anticipated action feature 400 BULLETS, written and directed by Tom Paton (Black Ops, Redwood, Black Site), hits VOD, digital and national home entertainment shelves for watch-at-home on March 2, 2021 from Shout! Studios. An edge-of-your-seat, military actioner about what it means to fight for honor instead of profit, 400 BULLETS combines gun battles, epic hand-to-hand fight sequences and the banter of hardened soldiers into a lean, two-fisted film that packed with a […]
It’s been a grand minute since we’ve given some lip service here to actor and martial artist Jean-Paul Ly. He’s worked both sides of the lens from shortfilms like Dead End and Law Plancel’s The Division, to stunt work in TV and film including Marvel’s Doctor Strange and Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist, his biggest breaks thusfar have been the successes he’s had on the feature front with Jimmy Henderson’s Jailbreak, and Marc Price’s Nightshooters to name a few. That list now grows a little more with National Film Award Winning and Frightfest favorite, director Tom Paton (Pandorica, Redwood, Black Site) whose sixth film now draws near in the form of military action thriller, 400 Bullets, now aiming for an early 2021 release. Production really played this one close to the chest as very little info was allowed to spill out when we first posted last November, but now we’ve been […]
Parlez-Vous Francais? Well, I suppose it may not really matter at this stage, but the first official images from the new action short, Acéré (which translates to “Sharp“), is making the rounds with Jean-Paul Ly and Law Plancel front and center after wrapping Covid-safe photography a day ago. Plot details are scant on the project as well but it hails from YouTube film essayist, Ross Peacock (a.k.a. Rossatron) who’s been a filmmaker for a while, but has definitely upscaled some having penned the script for action thriller, Killing Field, aspart of a three-picture deal for Bruce Willis at Emmett/Furla as reported in June. Ly and Plancel have been a distinct presence in the last five years with their involvement on short films and features, namely Dead End and proof-of-concept, The Division. The two shared a fight scene moment in Ly’s lead acting debut, Jimmy Henderson’s Cambodian hit film, Jailbreak, in […]
Actor Jean-Paul Ly is revving up to star in 400 Bullets for Black Site director Tom Paton. The film adds to the already adds to Ly’s growing slate since breaking out in 2017 with Jailbreak and the rousing action comedy, Nightshooters, and having kept the habit up with behind-the-scenes fight choreography for The Prey and introducing proof-of-concept actioners like The Division with Law Plancel, and Haz Dullul’s sci-fi, Rift. Paton just wrapped up black ops action horror, Stairs, which screened back in August for this year’s events at FrightFest. He’ll be on 400 Bullets rolling cameras next month upon which we should have some more details about the film and its production by then. Ly is also poised for other projects as well, including 14 Fists which also added John Hannah and Bai Ling, Kenneth Branagh’s Artemis Fowl in May 2020, and Ross Boyask’s I Am Vengeance: Retaliation, in addition […]
Actor and martial arts star Jean-Paul Ly is now in the early days of development for his own feature directing debut, The Shinobis. I can presently report several things on this – that Ly himself is also penning and producing the project which he’s billing as an action comedy going forward, and he’s also looking heavily at names relative to both acting and high-caliber stunt talent to fit the profile. Here is the tentative logline as it reads: After years on the run for deserting their clan, a dysfunctional ninja family, who tries to live a quiet ordinary life, is forced back into action to rescue one of their own. Production start date and location aren’t yet known while Ly is continues to push the needle forward on evolving his concept to its utmost full potential. Stay tuned for future reports. Ly is best known as a stunt performer and […]

Director Jimmy Henderson and actor and martial arts star Jean-Paul Ly are back in the habit these days with post-production under way for Chinese fight-heavy thriller, The Guardian. The film, shot entirely in Cambodia and wrapped two weeks ago, reunites Henderson and Ly with actor and rising star Gu Shangwei who led the cast for survival thriller, The Prey, on which Ly also served as fight choreographer. In The Guardian, Gu plays Gao Ran, a widoed, underdog boxer who throws fights in order to raise his daughter, Coco, while often tangling with her father in law, Lao Ye, who wants custody. When Coco suddenly goes missing, Gao’s unrelenting search unearths a human trafficking network where he will stop at nothing to save Coco once and for all, and he won’t be treading lightly. Hong Kong actor Eric Tsang (Monster Hunt, Monster Hunt 2, The Adventurers) will play Lao Ye. Tsang’s […]
It’s been a rousing five years of entertainment following along with the efforts of actors Jean-Paul Ly and Law Plancel. From respective background credits on Green Street Hooligans 3 and Marvel’s Doctor Strange to officiating a film production partnership with 2015 short, Dead End, as well as on Jimmy Henderson’s award-winning action comedy, Jailbreak, the two have more than proven themselves to be the real deal. A few years ago, they set upon their own banner to reiterate this fact with The Division, an ambitious pilot project starring Ly and Plancel in a fast-paced counterterrorism thriller about two members of an elite team out to foil a deadly plot targeting London. Clocked in at about 27 minutes, The Division is every bit of fanservice for folks who follow this website and the action genre with a narrative that easily follows an equally entertaining format similar to the likes of hit […]
Stunt professional David Newton‘s debut turn at filmmaking drew great prospects in the last few years with assassin thriller, The Take Down. Formerly titled “Amber“, the film brings aboard stunt performer and debut actor Jack Jagodka for a strong feature outing that has garnered nearly two-dozen awards for its festival run. A tragic mistake offsets a foreboding tale for Jack (Jagodka), an underworld assassin who now finds himself on the run from his employer, Eastwood (Kevin Mangar). With government handler Hawkins (Vanessa Coffey) targeting Eastwood for selling government secrets, Jack is taken under her wing and assigned the final task of killing his former boss. The mission is provenly not an easy one for Jack who is forced to fend off Eastwood’s cadre of mercenaries on London’s bustling streets. He’s not without friends of his own to aid him in his cause, but further mystery and intrigue loom with an […]
Martial arts star Jean-Paul Ly is still in tow with several projects in the making, most notably with the forthcoming production of martial arts thriller, 14 Fists. Currently joined by actress Bai Ling and BAFTA-nominated actor John Hannah, Anthony Jabre of Vedette Finance has officially come aboard to exec produce along with Ascendant Releasing’s own Bart Ruspoli and Freddie Hutton-Mills producing. Penned by Ruspoli, 14 Fists centers on a Chinese family living on a British council estate who is constantly harassed by a local gang until they take in a mysterious drifter. Ruspoli, whose producer/director credits shared with Hutton-Mills include Cryptic (2014), Clash Of The Dead (2015) and Genesis (2018), had been previously reported to make his solo directing debut with 14 Fists, although that currently remains to be seen with production scaled back from its earlier-announced 2018 Winter shoot. Prior to Vedette Finance, Anthony Jabre has worked alongside a […]
