Jeon reunites with Oh Seung-uk with whom she worked on the helmer’s second feature, 2015’s The Shameless. Folks attending this year’s Berlinale are just days away from the world premiere of Byun Sung-hyun’s killer-looking new thriller, Kill Bok-soon. The Netflix exclusive is back in the headlines as of late Wednesday with a brand new trailer that definitely cranks things up with hard-hitting violence to entice the genre fandom a bit, and with none other than Jeon Do-yeon leading the charge. Just check out the programming notes as written at the Berlinale website: Gil Boksoon leads a double life. She is both the mother of a teenage daughter, whom she is raising on her own, and a legendary professional killer at top-tier killing agency MK Ent. One could even say that she is better at killing people than raising them. But one day, either out of motherly instinct or simply because there are limits to what even the ruthless Boksoon is willing to do, she refuses to complete […]
If you enjoyed last year’s Kingmaker and 2017’s The Merciless, then you’ve got some viewing prospects at work with the official trailer now online for Byun Sung-hyun’s new crime drama, Kill Bok-soon. The pic is part of Netflix’s huge wave of content set to arrive from South Korea as the year rolls on, with Byun directing from his own script and actress Jeon Do-yeon (Emergency Declaration) starring in the title role. Boksoon leads a double life — she is both a mother of a teenage daughter and a legendary professional killer at top-tier killing agency MK. Caught between the mission of killing someone and the mission of raising someone, Boksoon refuses to complete an assigned mission and is thrown into an inevitable fight. Kill Bok-soon will also have its day this month at the 73rd Berlinale ahead of a March 31 premiere date on Netflix. Also starring are Sul Kyung-gu […]
There’s no mistake to be made here when it comes to the vision director Park Heung-Sik had in mind for the release of his latest film, Memories Of The Sword. Actresses Kim Go-Eun and Jeon Do-Yeon and actor Lee Byung-Hun take the lead in this sweeping period tale full of sprawling beauty accompanied by tragedy and betrayal that properly befits the caliber of Korean drama storytelling – a point eloquently made by Joey Min in his latest review. Moreover, comparisons to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and the like notwithstanding, it’s a film that definitely plays on emotion between scenes of dialogue and high-flying sword action and all the more entertaining for fans of wuxia, and most favorably with Kim in a role in which she really takes charge and does quite the justice. North American staple Well Go USA has since managed to snag this one for a limited theatrical […]
I’ve always loved Asian period pieces and Korean ones are always a treat. Memories Of The Sword is no exception; a Korean period drama with all the helpings: political corruption, betrayal, lost loves, revenge, and redemption. Also lining with a power cast of Lee Byung-Hun and Jeon Do-Yeon, and even 2PM‘s Lee Jun-Ho clearly the filmmakers and crew here were really aiming to make a blockbuster hit. Director Park Heung-Sik doesn’t give you room to settle by introducing you his vision for this movie in the first 5 minutes; Large, sweeping shots of a field full of sunflowers while the protagonist is enveloped in golden streaks of sunlight as she rushes through town and ends up watching a fast paced, dramatically cut fight scene. Though despite the visual onslaught of slow motion action, this movie is still a drama. Veteran actors of Lee and Jeon give great performances of their fallen hero characters, […]
Writer and director Park Heung-sik‘s latest period actioner, Memories Of The Sword, is gearing up for a theatrical release on August 13, which is less than a month away as of this write-up. The film had been in limbo late last year but with things picking up since then, trailers are now circulating and we now have a first full trailer for fans and those interested to sample Park‘s enchanting vision for a story of vengeance and catastrophic fate. It’s a story of one young woman’s destiny written in blood, headlined by a stellar cast with a […]
The most recent teaser for director Park Heung-sik‘s new period revenge thriller, Memories Of The Sword, is a dazzling feat with tons of visual glossiness to show for its efforts, and well worth basking in for as long as it’s taken to release since late last year. Since then, the teaser has garnered an international version with English subs, and a promo campaign presenting the first of several behind-the-scenes looks you can check out at the bottom of the page ahead of the film’s August release. SYNOPSIS: This is a story of three swordsmen, Jongul, Sullang, and Dukgi, who led an uprising during the era of the Koryo Dynasty. When their desire for freedom and justice is about to be fulfilled, Dukgi betrays them, leading to the death of Jongul, and to Sullang disappearing along with Jongul’s daughter Hong-ee. When Sullang leaves, she intones the prophecy that “You, no, not […]
