For all the flack that Hollywood gets for rehashing material, you have to give it to its elements when they’re combined accordingly, and in a way that resoundingly fits. The new Joker movie looks like everything you could possibly want from a film about the infamous DC Comics-based clown prince of crime. This is especially from a production that firstly set out to make a film with no direct connections to its preceding Justice League canon. Director Todd Phillips “Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. After winning hearts and minds at CinemaCon this week, Warner Bros. Pictures’ continued onward with its now public campaign for the October 4 release, Joker. The latest incarnation from Todd Phillips now presents a non-universal take on the iconic DC Comics villain that might even have you pining over a few “what would’ve been’s” or “could’ve been’s” with this new venture starring Oscar nominee Joaquin Phoenix in the title role. “Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck (Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale. The last we heard on the upcoming untitled Joker movie from The Hangover director Todd Phillips, Alec Baldwin pretty much came and left from the role of Thomas Wayne, patriarch of the Wayne family whose tragic fallout would birth the rise of the Dark Knight himself, Batman. Granted, this film doesn’t share space with Warner Bros.’ current DCEU timetable, and so therein lies the question of just what will apply with this particular film. Lynne Ramsay’s new crime thriller, You Were Never Really Here, is just a few months out from its U.S. release. Between now and then, much will be ado with its star, actor Joaquin Phoenix, who is now the center of new discussions surrounding Warner Bros.’s upcoming standalone Joker film. As Variety’s exclusive on Thursday notes, further studio negotiations remain pending while the actor himself thought it over and ultimately agreed to star in the film after meeting with Phillips late last year. I don’t know about you, but I enjoyed the overall span of The Hangover Trilogy from War Dogs director Todd Phillips. He’s got a great handle on comedy but I’m a little more fascinated by what he might be able to bring to a more grounded, dark and cerebral narrative… At least that’s what’s being offered with news that a deal is set for Phillips to direct a new Joker movie that will be a lauchpad for a fledgeling, to-be-named WB/DC banner in which it can create projects and expand on DC characters. Phillips is joined by 8 Mile, Stronger and The Fighter scribe Scott Silver in penning the script, and will produce the film with Martin Scorsese. An intriguing part is the setting. Kicking and punching, bleeding, pain, getting tossed through windows, etc. – Such is the message you get if you’re a baddie and you cross paths with action cinema favorite, Jason Statham, now front and center in the new movie, Wild Card, now due for a December 7, 2014 January 30, 2015 release in the U.S.. The film comes nearly thirty years after author William Goldman’s 1985 Warner Books publication, “Heat”, led to its first film adaptation a year later with then-lead actor Burt Renyolds, which turned out to be more controversial in its troubled state of production at the time. It’s not often certain titles get circulated that awaken people to the current state of action movies around the globe. Such is the case with the Republic of Kazakhstan which seems as good a place to start as any with a few films on the way from that region, including known screenwriter Talgad Zhanibekov‘s directorial debut, Joker. The film began its inception in 2010, born out of the desire to create an intellectual and spectacular film for a cult audience, with a story appearently written with a noir comic book appeal, much like what Alex Proyas and Robert Rodriguez did for The Crow and Sin City films, respectively.
