Noryang: Deadly Sea arrives on Digital, Blu-Ray and DVD on May 14 from Well Go USA. Writer/director Kim Han-min’s affinity for history has paid off greatly over the last decade. He’s reached box office and critical acclaim focused on the exploits of 16th century naval legend, Admiral Yi Sun-shin, with a trilogy of films beginning with 2014’s The Admiral: Roaring Currents. Actor Choi Min-sik starred in the role set near the tail end of the seven year Imjin War. Going forward, Kim would continue with a prequel setting in Hansan: Rising Dragon, starring Park Hae-il in 2022. The presumed finale now arrives in the form of Noryang: Deadly Sea, with none other than Kim Yoon-seok shepherding the finale chapter of Kim’s trilogy. Charting the course for a December 20 rollout in South Korea is Lotte Cultureworks with the Korean release of Noryang: Deadly Sea. Actor Kim Yun-seok carries the lead role of admiral Yi Sun-shin for director Kim Han-min’s third and final cinematic expression of the historical figure with a story set in 1598, as Yi readies for his last valiant battle against the Wae army near the end of the seven year Imjin War. The film also stars Baek Yoon-sik, Jung Jae-young and Huh Joon-ho. Well Go USA will release the film stateside in the new year following its rights acquisition from sales agent Acemaker back in May. One other piece of news out of Cannes over the weekend came by way of Screendaily with director Kim Han-min’s Noryang: Deadly Sea having been snapped up by Well Go USA among its aquisitions. The film is the third in the director’s Roaring Currents Trilogy telling of Joseon admiral Yi Sun-shin, which began with 2014’s Roaring Currents which starred Choi Min-sik. The film’s box office success persisted a franchise that continued with last year’s Hansan: Rising Dragon with Park Hae-il in the lead. In 1598, the seven-year Imjin War nears an end as Wae invaders prepare to withdraw from Joseon. Admiral Yi Sun-shin leads an allied fleet of Joseon and Ming ships to annihilate the Wae army. Hansan: Rising Dragon screens on Thursday, July 28 as part of this year’s festivities at the New York Asian Film Festival. The film will release theatrically on July 29 from Well Go USA Entertainment. The official trailer is now up for Kim Han-min’s forthcoming prequel, Hansan: Emergence Of Dragon; Hansan: Rising Dragon is the affirmed title for what is expected to roll out from Well Go USA, as one of five Korean titles acquired by the company for North America as of last week’s Deadline report.
