Nearly a decade since its announcement, Juno Mak’s new crime thriller, Sons Of The Neon Night, will finally have its day with buyers at the upcoming Asian Content & Film Market in Busan. Taiwan-based Distribution Workshop will rep international sales on the film which began filming in 2017 and wrapped the following year, followed by next to no movement despite at one point being announced for a 2019 release. Planned for a 2025 release, Sons Of The Neon Night is directed by Mak from his own script. It stars Takeshi Kaneshiro in a story set in a post-apocalyptic and snowed-in Hong Kong, where explosive gun battles and the murder of the leader of a global drug trafficking ring ignite a war to create a world without drugs. Sometimes dreams really do come true. A month or so ago, I was approached by Lee – head honcho here at Film Combat Syndicate – with an offer to write for the site. Well, if you know me, I love to spew my thoughts down on the page but I rarely find time. For Lee, I would do my best to make the time. Fast forward and I’m offered the chance to not only watch Soi Cheang’s latest foray into action cinema, TWILIGHT OF THE WARRIORS: WALLED IN, but to record the first ever video review for my YouTube channel, Fu for Thought. As you might imagine, I once again jumped at the chance. And here we are. I’ll admit, cramming my messy thoughts into a less-than-thirty-minute video was bloody hard. But I managed. Did I miss pertinent plot points? Yep. Did I cover every fight scene? Absolutely not. But […]
To say Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In has martial arts cinema fans champing at the bit would be an understatement. The film, directed by Soi Cheang (Limbo), and starring Raymond Lam (Saving General Yang), Richie Jen (Seoul Raiders), Louis Koo (Paradox), Sammo Hung (Ip Man 2) and Philip Ng (Once Upon a Time in Shanghai) was met with immediate anticipation as soon as it was announced back in 2021. In fact, the film garnered buzz as far back as 2013 when Donnie Yen was rumored to star. Fast forward a decade and here we are, finally getting a taste of what we might see from legendary Action Director, Kenji Tanigaki. I think I can comfortably say that fans won’t be disappointed! While a few snaps of Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In‘s FILMART promo poster made it to Instagram yesterday, Chinese website and newspaper, Ming Pao, posted this teaser late in the […]

At one point just when Che believes he’s reached the end of his investigation, he uncovers a new twist revealing Guo’s involvement. Koo’s sales outlet, One Cool Film, revealed the trailer and latest poster at FilMart on Monday which you can view below.

Louis Koo is back at Hong Kong FilMart this year with a heavy presence stemming in part from the slate at his One Cool Film banner. It is there that he is joined by Paradox cohorts producer Soi Cheang and Wilson Yip as the team is now sounding off with a trailer for upcoming crime drama, The Dream, the Bubble and the Shadow. Variety‘s media partnership coverage quotes One Cool in its report citing that The Dream, the Bubble and the Shadow, which also stars Eric Kot and Ceilia Choi, “is the realization of Yip’s longtime dream to make a film about magic”. Per the article, the film “stars Koo as a down-on-his-luck man who meets a young boy while hiding out on an island.” Check out the trailer below, along with a highlight reel just beneath of all the titles One Cool is introducing this year, including Out Of […]

It’s been eight (count ’em, EIGHT) years since VFX steward Ng Yuen-Fai’s conceptual sci-fi action short, Virtus, made the rounds with the substantial backing by the presence of actor Louis Koo whose One Cool Film label has been shepherding the project as producer. Indeed the wait has been long for the sci-fi thriller we all know now as Warriors Of Future, which joins Koo alongside actors Sean Lau, Carina Lau, Nick Cheung, Phillip Keung, Qian Wu and many more. Penned by Law Chi-Leung, the film is set in the future where Earth is devoid of life due to climate change and pollution, while a meteorite brings an extraterrestrial life to our planet. That’s the basic gist of what we’ve been seeing apart from the ambitious production design and feel we’ve been gathering from the recent trailers and behind-the-scenes featurettes making the rounds, including a new trailer available as of Monday which […]

Already making the rounds is the latest trailer for New Kung Fu Cult Master, the first of two back-to-back installments re-adapting the Jin Yong classic novel from directing duo Wong Jing and Keung Kwok-Man. This one comes subtitled by way of Shaw Theatres who’ve just released the film a few days ago in Singapore. For decades, all forces in the martial world had been fighting for two legendary weapons, the Dragon Saber and the Heavenly Sword. Xie Xun, the “Golden Lion King” of the Ming Sect, had made countless enemies in seizing the Dragon Saber. His god-brother Cuishan (Louis Koo) was coerced by the Six Major Sects to expose Xie Xun’s location and ends up dying under Emei Sect Master No-mercy’s Heavenly Sword… The latest installment rejoins Jing with familiar territory nearly 30 years after directing Jet Li and Chingmy Yau starrer, Kung Fu Cult Master in 1993. The new […]
It’s been about eight years since actor Louis Koo planted his producer flag at One Cool Film, having built a successful slate of active and developing projects. One such title includes VFX steward Ng Yuen-Fai’s long-awaited feature directing debut, Warriors Of Future, starring Koo and actor Sean Lau – both who’ve kept busy in the years since completing the film. Fast forward to today, and after surviving a changing industrial atmosphere in the wake of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the film’s campaign is on a roll as of last week, rolling out two Breaking News-style promos published online for Hong Kong SAR China readers – the latest of which you can view above. The film, according to HK01, is revving up a release on 200 theatrical screens in 2022, which will also include outdoor theaters. In the not-too-distant future, pollution and global warming have left Earth barren, a giant meteorite […]
Lend all the gracious mentions as you may to notable directors like Jesse Johnson, Liam O’Donnell and Isaac Florentine for all your action cinema needs. Otherwise, feel free to leave room for director Herman Yau’s place in your hierarchal lists of filmmaker faves given the thrills he’s dished out in the last several years to add to his diverse resumè, helming two explosive sequels with The White Storm 2: Drug Lords, and Shock Wave 2, both featuring actor Andy Lau. If you’ve seen those titles then you’re in full understanding of the dangers of letting a good thing slip by. Alas, it is Yau who will soon be bookending a long and winding journey that began in 2018 with the forthcoming release of his latest crime thriller, Death Notice, now finally making headway these days with an official trailer ahead of a December 10 release. The film joins Yau with […]
