For years fans wondered if or when actor Wesley Snipes would reclaim the role of hit comic book action horror franchise, Blade. On Saturday night, the conversation changed drastically at SDCC with the announcement of actor Mahershala Ali (Moonlight, Alita Battle Angel) set to star. Visually upgraded from its 1973 comic book likeness by author Marv Wolfman and illustrator Gene Colan, the Blade franchise took off in 1998 under director Stephen Norrington with Snipes starring in the title role, a modern day dhampir (a semi-human with vampire genes) waging a vengeful age-old one-man war against vampires. Snipes produced all three films with Guillermo del Toro sitting in for the 2002 sequel, Blade 2, while franchise screenwriter David S. Two-time Academy Award-winning actor Mahershala Ali is set to star in a new sci-fi film, Sovereign. Plot details are being kept under wraps according to the latest press announcement sigaling the film from Entertainment One (eOne) and 21 Laps Entertainment. Three-time BAFTA-winning director Marc Munden (Amazon series Electric Dreams, upcoming The Secret Garden) is tapped to direct the film from a screenplay by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods who previous penned actor and director John Krasinski’s 2018 Critic’s Choice award-winning smash hit horror and now sequel-bound A Quiet Place; An original draft of the script was written by duo Greg Weidman and Geoff Tock (Zoo, Limitless), with revisions by Jack Thorne (Wonder, upcoming The Secret Garden). 21 Laps’ own Shawn Levy will produce along with Dan Levine and Dan Cohen, adding to previous credits that include Denis Villeneuve’s Eric Heisserer-penned and BAFTA-nominated Arrival, and the hit Netflix series, Stranger Things, […]
Moonlight is not only a film with several impressive accolades, it is one bearing those with a unique signature. Indeed, Moonlight is a gathering of firsts; At the 89th Academy Awards, Moonlight was the first of its kind to win the Best Picture Award, with Mahershala Ali, winning Best Supporting Actor and ultimately becoming the first Muslim to win in the designation. Actor Tom Hardy has some good news happening on the film front in various reports, one such including Deadline‘s latest piece on upcoming action thriller, Triple Frontier. SAG Award-winning actor Mahershala Ali (Luke Cage, Moonlight) will be joining Hardy for Paramount Pictures, as will actor Channing Tatum once confirmed. A Most Violent Year helmer J.C. Chandor is set to direct the film. Plot details are nil but the word is the film will focus on unstable criminal activities along junctioning rivers at the border between Paraguay, Argentina, and Brazil. Producing are Charles Roven and Alex Gartner of Atlas Entertainment along with the film’s screenwriter, Mark Boal. Ali also stars in Robert Rodriguez’s current production of Alita: Battle Angel and director Michael Larnell’s Roxanne Roxanne which premiered at Sundance in January.
