One thing is especially certain about actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead in the last decade or so: She stands out pretty well in the action genre, though this largely depends on the packaging. I prefer her role in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World over her 2020 outing as Huntress in Birds Of Prey any day, though it’s nice to see she’s kept up the habit this year with Netflix’s latest trailer buzz, Kate. Meticulous and preternaturally skilled, Kate is the perfect specimen of a finely tuned assassin at the height of her game. But when she uncharacteristically blows an assignment targeting a member of the yakuza in Tokyo, she quickly discovers she’s been poisoned, a brutally slow execution that gives her less than 24 hours to exact revenge on her killers. As her body swiftly deteriorates, Kate forms an unlikely bond with the teenage daughter of one of her past victims. […]
I remember going to see The Expendables over Scott Pilgrim vs. The World during both their theatrical runs happening simultaneously. I never got to check out the film on the big screen before its theatrical releases ended and was even more disappointed that a sequel didn’t follow eight after. The latter hasn’t really dimmed the cult fan fervor much in the years since then, and with the film getting an exclusive Dolby theatrical re-release soon, that fact is unlikely to change. Dolby launched its trailer on Wednesday with director Edgar Wright lending some lipservice of his own via social media, with Dolby announcing an April 30 release. Based on Bryan Lee O’Malley’s serial 2004 graphic novel out of Oni Press, Wright’s alluring hodgepodge of quirky coming-of-age comedy and martial arts-infused action deals in themes of introspection and self-discovery, by way of whimsical mixes of video game and comic book-style spectacle. It’s the ultimate battle for which Will Smith (a la Men In Black) “makes this look good” with visionary director Ang Lee’s Gemini Man scoring an October 11 release. Paramount Pictures has an impressive slate on its hands which also lists this particular sci-fi thriller that’s been long in the making with years of its constant on-and-off the shelf treatment between directors and studios. Gemini Man is an innovative action-thriller starring Will Smith as Henry Brogan, an elite assassin, who is suddenly targeted and pursued by a mysterious young operative that seemingly can predict his every move. Also starring are Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Clive Owen and Benedict Wong. Check out the brand new trailer above.
Cathy Yan’s Birds Of Prey is well on the way for Mary Elizabeth Winstead who still has Netflix in her sights with upcoming action thriller, Kate. She’ll be joined by three-time Academy Award Nominee Woody Harrelson (The Highwaymen, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, Solo: A Star Wars Story) for the Cedric Nicolas-Troyan-directed film. Umair Aleem wrote the script which centers on a ruthless criminal operative who has less than 24 hours to exact revenge on her enemies after being irreversibly poisoned. In the process forms an unexpected bond with the daughter of one of her past victims. Bryan Unkeless (I, Tonya, Bright, Birds of Prey), Kelly McCormick (Deadpool 2, the upcoming Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw) and Patrick Newall (Dhaka, The Old Man And The Gun) are producing with David Leitch and Scott Morgan exec producing. Stunt multi-hypenate Jonathan Eusebio (John Wick franchise, upcoming Birds of Prey, Black […]
Twitter and Instagram were the places to be to spy an eye on any and all news regarding Cathy Yan’s new endeavors with Suicide Squad‘s apparent real star, Margot Robbie. Indeed Yan will be the second to helm a DC Comics feature adaptation after Wonder Woman helmer Patty Jenkins as cameras are finally underway for Birds Of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn) for its February 7, 2020 release. After splitting up with The Joker, Harley Quinn and three other female superheroes – Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya – come together to save the life of a little girl (Cassandra Cain) from an evil crime lord. That evil crime lord is likely Ewan McGregor’s Black Mask (sans the actual mask in the pre-lim teaser above) who stands opposite our leading ladies (and gents) making up the principal cast. Robbie is joined by Mary Elizabeth Winstead who […]
The past week has been stirring quite a bit for Warner Bros.’s latest push to cast DC adaptation, Birds Of Prey. That report broke exclusively at The Hollywood Reproter at the time and now the word at Deadline is confirming the additions of Jurnee Smolett-Bell (Roll Bounce, Underground) and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Death Proof, Scott Pilgrim VS. The World) for the respective roles of Black Canary and Huntress. Smolett-Bell and Winstead were among a crop of picks for the roles including Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Sofia Boutella, Janelle Monae, Margaret Qualley and Cristin Milioti. The two will now join the DC feature headlining with actress and DCEU prospect, Suicide Squad headliner and actress Margot Robbie who will reprise as Harley Quinn. Cathy Yan is making her mark at directing from a script by Bumblebee scribe Christina Hodson which will see our trio battle a force of evil in a Gotham left unprotected […]
Universal Big things are finally impending after more than two decades for Paramount and Skydance’s long-awaited production of fantasy action thriller, Gemini Man. Will Smith, cast early on as the lead will be joined by actor Clive Owen and actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead as trade news sources THR and Variety have noted in recent memory for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon helmer Ang Lee to direct. The project was originally set up at Disney from a pitch by Darren Lemke in 1997 but remained on the backburner due to the lack of technology for the same actor to produce dual performances on screen. Nowadays with such tech on hand, the Bright star will lead the film as an over-the-hill assassin who becomes the prime target of a cloning program that assigns his killer, a rendition of himself 25 years younger, to take him out. Owen will star as the head of […]
Well, I went and saw Die Hard 5 last night. It isn’t better than Die Hard 4, just a little bigger in size and scope with a lot of explosions and car/truck crashes, but it brings something worth looking forward to when Die Hard 6 comes out. It was larger in scope, taking place in Russia amidst political turmoil and unrest, and holds its own with epic gun battles action scenes to keep viewers interested. To be honest, I missed a good few bits of it toward the end because I was falling asleep. That could be because it was real late at night and my body started shutting down in my seat because of it. But to be even more honest, this is the first time in my history as a filmgoer that I have fallen asleep in front of an action film (missing one or two minutes every […]
