Hats off to Fred Topel’s Showbiz Cheat Sheet article for listing all the current films available now streaming on The Criterion Channel featuring leading lady of action, Michelle Yeoh. The ceremony has not waned since the release of Everything Everywhere All At Once, the Daniels-directed bouquet of kung fu, sci-fi, fantasy, and family comedy and drama attributed to a ubiquitous cinematic vision and incumbent messaging of love and acceptance, and generational healing, also being hailed as a banner moment for AAPI inclusion in entertainment. Indeed, while Yeoh’s nascency in film and television may not have been rooted in martial arts like most of her prominent colleagues in the Hong Kong industry, the Malaysia-born, decorated and now SAG award-winning screen star has more than earned her stripes with an amply and largely memorable resume of hits that have shaped her career thus and so. If you have Criterion, you’re welcome to […]
After the warming welcome that the film had by the critics, the appreciation of the audience and its recent success on the latest Golden Globes ceremony, it was time for us for show some love on the latest film by Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, because we should consider ouselves lucky to live in a multiverse where this film exists. Everything Everywhere all at Once, is a wonderful trip where we follow Evelyn (Michelle Yeoh) a Chinese housewife owner of a laundromat, fed up with her life and circumstances, who unexpectedly starts a journey through different multiverses, in a path paved by the decisions she made in the past, and the ones she didn´tm getting herself into a voyage through what it could’ve been and what actually is, in order to find the perfect balance to keep on living with no remorses, in a plot that is an ode of […]

Years ago, I became obsessed with listing my “top-tens” or “fives” in final fight scenes. There was a UK website that produced such lists and for their final fight scene list, it bothered me for the longest time that it never had the one featured in Drive between Mark Dacascos and Masaya Kato, so you can imagine how fulfilled I felt when the page loaded and I finally saw it listed. That website has long since disappeared, but the practice of listing fight faves stands strong among the action genre fandom to this day. Thus, I felt compelled to just list my own top ten in final fight scenes just to feel it out some and see what folks think. For this, I applied several factors into this analysis; While choreography and cinematography are both important elements, I made other deductions as well which include the scene’s connection to the […]
I haven’t been able to catch Big Bad Wolves, so I don’t have a reference to go by when discussing anything prior to the latest solo-directing work of that film’s co-helmer, Navot Papushado. Going forward, I can only speak instinctively and defer to my natural responses for a film like Gunpowder Milkshake, an assassin thriller that undoubtedly attempts at following a formula to success. The uncertainty here, really, is that the formula isn’t its own which kind of makes things a bit problematic, even for a genre of film that’s about as escapable as breathing or standing. Assassin thrillers are fun to watch. We all love the time-honored tale of the lone killer who for some reason wants out of the life that they’ve otherwise fallen in by some tragic twist of fate, exacerbated by another twist that raises the stakes and compels you root for said protagonist right down […]
Director Joe Carnahan has been one of the most fascinating filmmakers I’ve followed in the last two decades, having seen all of his movies sans his 1998 directing debut, Blood, Guts, Bullets and Octane. Carnahan definitely gets right down to the grit and gumption of his stories. They’re not all masterpieces, but they kick ass at levels that are wholly worth the attention of his viewing audience. Often times though, that fact gets drowned out by a lot of bullshit, whether it’s Carnahan’s past Twitter fracas or the sheepish excuses of overweening film festival programmers who think a superhero movie about a latino crimefighter doesn’t come up to scratch (as documented in since deleted Tweets), or the blowback he gets for expressing views that reflect on matters of politics or just basic human decency, barring labels. Funny thing about politics though: More often than not, it is inherently inescapable in […]

Michelle Yeoh is making her return to action with Gunpowder Milkshake. As the trades cycled on Friday, the Star Trek: Discovery actress will join Karen Gillan of MCU franchise fame for the female-fronted thriller along with Lena Headey (Game Of Thrones), Angela Bassett (Black Panther), and Paul Giamatti (Shoot ‘Em Up, Billions). Navot Papushado and Aahron Keshales (Big Bad Wolves) are directing from a script they wrote with co-writer Ehud Lavski. Not much about the plot is being made public (at least willingly despite some serious Googling with a expanded results and no, I won’t share here at least yet), though current loglines are listing it as ” a high-concept female-centric assassin thriller that spans multiple generations”. Fair enough. Cameras roll June 3 at Babelsberg FilmStudio, Germany. Studiocanal and The Picture Company partners Andrew Rona & Alex Heineman are producing with Keshales serving as exec producer. Yeoh is just coming […]
Next December will see the first of a quartet of sequels arising finally for James Cameron’s transformative action adventure sci-fi saga, Avatar 2. An official title may yet be pending unless that’s the title Walt Disney Pictures goes for after acquiring all of 20th Century Fox’s properties as of last month. What is official, however, is the addition of actress Michelle Yeoh following her recent appearances in Crazy Rich Asians, CBS All Access series Star Trek Discovery, and Yuen Woo-Ping’s Master Z: The Ip Man Legacy. She will join a cast of new and returning faces led by Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana, with Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang also returning. Director Yuen Woo-ping takes the mantle for actor and martial artist Max Zhang’s latest solo feat, Master Z: The Ip Man Legacy, a fresh and livening underdog tale spun-off from the current Ip Man trilogy long prior to the fourth film’s release this summer. Zhang has made some great strides in the last few years, including at least a few Hollywood credits to his belt – this, after proving formidably as a major seller to fans of the genre long since stunt-doubling Zhang Ziyi on the set of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Fans of the Ip Man franchise won’t feel too left out as Yuen’s spin-off assures with the occssional flashback here and there to cosign the new venture that otherwise expands the commercial Ip Man cinematic universe. Hong Kong is where our story is set, still under British rule, and a system of government that’s become inherently corrupt. Following […]

EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE is set to shoot next Spring from Neon and AGBO’s The Russo Brothers
I’ve seen my fair share of time loop thrillers. Joe Carnahan, the man with the plan for the upcoming reinstallment of The Raid has his own vested in Boss Level, and once more returning actor Frank Grillo to the big screen courtesy of Entertainment Studios following their acquisition from Emmett/Furla/Oasis a few days ago. Grillo is already joined by Naomi Watts, Ken Jeong, and Mel Gibson for the new movie still in production, and as it stands, word brings that martial artists, actresses Selina Lo and the incomparable Michelle Yeoh are now attached to the film. Production is already underway in Atlanta, Georgia with a 2019 release in tow, as reported via Patrick Frater’s exclusive at Variety on Friday. Groundhog Day with an action genre twist – BOSS LEVEL follows the story of ROY PULIVER who is trapped in a time loop. Every day he wakes up and the assassins that are pursuing […]
Longtime actor and producer Raymond Wong took to the floor at Filmart in Hong Kong to launch Mandarin Motion Pictures, ripe with a slate still fresh with titles both new and pending. The move comes following Wong’s sale of Pegasus Entertainment to Nice Rich Group Ltd. last October, which Wong launched in 2009 with son, Edmond Wong, after establishing himself for years as a staple film producer of Cinema City’s Aces Go Places franchise, and with Mandarin Films in 1991 which served to produce the first two Ip Man titles. This brings us to at least one important title to keep in mind with actor and action star Max Zhang whose career has since begun spanning across the world from Asia to North America. Moviegoers in the former will likely be first to bear witness to his latest headlining role in the Ip Man franchise spin-off, Master Z: Ip Man […]
