Could HALO Be Coming To Showtime?
I’m not a gamer. Point in fact, the last time I owned a console was a Sega Genesis in the early 1990’s, so I won’t pretend to be at all familiar with the highly popukar sci-fi game Halo. However, as it stands, the game itself has been poised for sometime now to get its own live-action feature film for the past nine years, with the last known attempt to garner Elysium helmer Neill Blomkamp for its director.
In the meantime, we did get a cool little webseries back in 2012 via Machinima Prime called Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn, but since then, plans for the live-action film itself continue to sit in limbo. However, on Friday, the official word came that Xbox Entertainment Studios is currently heavy in talks to develop a potential TV series for Showtime, as well as Xbox Live for interactive viewers.
The series has reportedly become a high priority for studio president Nancy Tellem who has been working on the series with Steven Spielberg under his Amblin Entertainment TV banner for a little over a year now. This time, if all goes well, production will seek showrunners with Steven Spielberg executive produce from a script by Stuart Beattie.
This is kind of what I wanted to see happen with Mortal Kombat, which is also suffering from film development hell with a possible third webseason on the way (last I checked anyway, unless we’re still mistaken). But it’s good to see Halo making the rounds in the news this month for such a production. As a Showtime viewer, and someone who enjoys a good action series on cable, I’m all for it.
