Casting is underway with plans toward a summer shoot on action comedy series, Obliterated, which has moved from TBS to Netflix as of Monday. The show hails from Sony Pictures Television and is being shepherded by Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald, the minds behind hit Karate Kid spin-off series, Cobra Kai. Obliterated is billed as a high octane action-comedy that tells the story of an elite special forces team who thwarts a deadly threat to Las Vegas. After their celebratory party, filled with booze, drugs and sex, the team discovers that the bomb they deactivated was a fake. The now intoxicated team has to fight through their impairments, overcome their personal issues, find the real bomb, and save the world. Patrick Hughes (The Expendables 3, The Hitman’s Bodyguard, The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard) is well on the up-and-up at Netflix this season. The streamer’s latest acquisition of Hughes’ latest out of Sony Pictures, The Man From Toronto, will bow in all territories sans China later this year, following in line with Sony’s first look with the streamer in 2021. Penned by Robbie Fox and Chris Bremner, The Man From Toronto stars Kevin Hart and Woody Harrelson, and “revolves around a case of a mistaken identity after the world’s deadliest assassin, known as the “man from Toronto,” (Harrelson) and a stranger, played by Hart, run into each other at an Airbnb. NIMONA: Get A First Look At The New Netflix Animated Feature Arriving In 2023

Netflix on Monday unveiled the first look at Nick Bruno and Troy Quane’s new animated feature, Nimona. The streamer is also partnering with Annapurna and DNEG Animation on the project which is based on the New York Times bestselling graphic novel by author ND Stevenson. Penned by Roy Lee, Karen Ryan, Julie Zackary, Nimona is set in a techno-medieval world where a shape-shifting and might-be-a-monster teen is the only one who can prove the innocence of a knight who’s been framed for a crime he didn’t commit. The streamer describes the film as “a story about the labels we assign to people and the shapeshifter who refuses to be defined by anyone.” Leading the voice cast is Chloë Grace Moretz as Nimona, with Riz Ahmed as Ballister Boldheart, and Eugene Lee Yang as Ambrosius Goldenloin. Robert L. Baird, Megan Ellison, Andrew Millstein are exec producing the film which is slated for a 2023 release.

I’m hoping we’ll hear more soon on the 2020-announced Green Hornet redux that screenwriter and author David Koepp was attached to write at the time. Meanwhile, it’s worth discussing his latest effort now with everyone’s favorite Point Break director, Kathryn Bigelow, who is adapting Koepp’s upcoming novel, Aurora. Set to publish on June 7 from HarperCollins, Aurora “follows characters who are coping with the collapse of the social order, set against a catastrophic worldwide power crisis.” per the logline via Netflix on Thursday this week. Bigelow, the Academy Award winning helmer of films also including The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty and Detroit, will also produce the film alongside Greg Shapiro, Gavin Polone and Koepp, who is also credited for penning Stephen Soderbergh’s pandemic thriller, Kimi. Following the announced removal of several Marvel/Disney shows from Netflix last month, Disney+ is affirming is committment to its line-up as of Tuesday, bringing “Daredevil”, “Jessica Jones”, “Luke Cage”, “Iron Fist”, “The Defenders” and “The Punisher” to its platform beginning March 16. The move also includes all seven seasons of “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” which initially enjoyed a seven-year run on ABC following its Fall 2013 premiere. The news also brings word of a change in operative use where all U.S. subscribers will be then prompted to set parental controls, using enhanced content ratings and PIN protection for all included profiles. “Those that choose to keep their settings the same will continue to enjoy Disney+ as they always have within a TV-14 content rating environment, with the option to make changes at any time under Profile settings.” says the streamer. You’re not alone if you’re like me and feel as if the next Deadpool movie couldn’t come fast enough. Actor Ryan Reynolds clearly hasn’t missed a step when it comes to delivering performances in physically demanding roles, which ought to spice things up for you in case you haven’t seen director Shawn Levy’s Free Guy yet. That one is now available on disc, digital and streaming where available, and come March 11, should make for a nice double feature alongside Netflix’s The Adam Project, also helmed by Levy. The legendary manga series BASTARD!! is well known worldwide among manga fans. With over 30 million copies sold, the Shueisha published series is a mix of high fantasy and heavy metal the likes of which are only comparable to…well, Heavy Metal. Surprisingly, however, besides a short OVA run between 1992 and 1993, the series has never received a full length animation. Enter Liden Films and Netflix, with a 24 episode Original Net Animation! Bastard!!: Heavy Metal, Dark Fantasy began publishing in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump in 1988, moving to Ultra Jump in 2000, where it currently makes it’s home. Regretfully, the latest chapter was released in 2010 and the latest tankobon released in 2012, but the series maintains a strong cult following. Will Smith is getting a foot in the game with Netflix to bring to life an adaptation of Tọlá Okogwu’s upcoming novel, Onyeka and the Academy Of The Sun. The film will focus on a teenager who learns she has powers and travels to Nigeria to learn more about her origins, where she discovers a threat to her newfound magical community. Ola Shokunbi (Satellite, Indigo, upcoming A Yellow Heaven) is set to write the adaptation based on the novel which will publish this June in the U.S. and the U.K. from Simon & Schuster. Smith and Jon Mone will produce the film via Smith’s Westbrook Studios banner alongside David Oyelowo for Yoruba Saxon. Director Roel Reine’s latest return to martial arts and fantasy with Netflix’s Fistful Of Vengeance does a fine job of maintaining the same energy and flair of its preceding Wu Assassins series, and overall delivers largely on what fans can expect from a film headlined by Iko Uwais, an action star who broke ground more than ten years ago with some of the most elevated action cinema ever shot on camera. Reine continues a lot of that fanfare here, though lacking the same effect as its predecessors, but still bearing some fruit along the way.
