THE HIT LIST: October 23, 2017

I’m actually a little upset that I came across a few of this week’s entries as late as I did, particularly having tried to been on top of it. Such is why I need at least two more of me (especially since one could use the extra sleep ?).

At any rate, tireless and forever tired as I am (a phrase coined by my friend Philippe), my quest continues to help bring notable independent content and stunt talent to the spotlight per our weekly vehicle here at the Hit List. Let’s load up on paramount stunt talent with the latest stunt and training reels from today’s talented stunt performers beginning with Dylan Rampulla, Jessica Barfoot, LeRoyal Tutt, Alina Andrei, Kage Yami, Damali Ross, Tony Vittorioso, Donny Nichols, Niko Dalman, Camran Bostanabad, Johnny Zhao Haitao and Darrell McLean. We round out this playlist with a tasty teaser reel by a fantastic group from the land down under called Dauntless Movement Crew, and a delighful and adventurous parkour mini doc by performer and filmmaker Remi Girard.

Onto a few promotional bits this week and we revert to an earlier piece I did for Stephen Vitale’s upcoming chanbara horror proof of concept, Sword Of The Dead. The teaser is available in the campaign video I wrote up on here but you’re more than welcome to view an isolated version just beneath. And, by all means, stay tuned for our forthcoming interview.

Last and far from least is the latest creative effort from Chasing The Dragon and London Has Fallen co-star, actor Bryan Larkin with Dead End, the latest entry in a series of shorts here from director and co-star Carter Ferguson. Filmed on a shoestring budget, London, Hong Kong and the U.K. serve as the backdrop for the narrative with Larkin starring as a contract killer whose latest job with a young hitman goes awry, forcing the two to question their motives.

Larkin wrote the self-funded Dead End which was also crowdfunded in an effort to help circulate through festivals, so keep an eye out for this one.

And onto the business we go of bringing hearty fight action by way of a select number shorts and action practice gems, starting with a pair of offerings via Vimeo with Ulrik Bruchholz and Andy Long having brought their six-year old test bout to my attention over the weekend with Do Not Disturb. The second comes courtesy of one of my favorite people in film and action, Tanay Genco Ulgen who harnesses his strengthening storytelling for a gripping crime thriller capped off with brutal action featuring Starlise Waschuk in One Eight Seven.

For the playlist just beneath, our good friends at Lunar Stunts warm up the crowd with an L.A.-set installment of Eric Nguyen’s The Fighting Journey while Kai Ferris and Ben Van Huis aim to please with a slick new lightsaber gem, and Gaetan Caillot trades fisticuffs and prop-knife warfare with Gabriel Senges over at Stunt-Do Fighting as the start of this week’s Fights And Films playlist. Following that is David Lavallee‘s own triskadekaphobic action short offering with The 13th Friday as one of two shorts this month reviving the Jason Voorhees fandom – the other being Flawless Films‘s newest fanfight pitting the resurrected killer against the Gingerninja himself, Aaron Gassor as Spider-Man.

Filmmaker and fight choreographer Lawrence Yip assembles his own throwdown with performers Sam Jaikaran and Nhan Du for hitman short, Just Another Job, before we take a Critical Coffee Break with a couple of guys named Trevor and Orion and learn their swift and applicable techniques for breaking a werewolf’s curse, Troy Sandford and Vladmir Ershov delve right into a spectacular action short with an anime twist for Said Chaou’s My Revenge, and Rooster Teeth’s latest shortfilm thereafter ties into the Volume 5 premiere of RWBY, focusing on the rising underdog, Yang, and I highly recommend watching the series now available online via YouTube or Rooster Teeth, or Crunchyroll.

Inanna Sarkis and Anwar Jibawi return with a second episode of spy comedy webseries, Secret Life (watch the first installment HERE), while Brian Lee and Matthew Sumner clown around over at Beat Down Boogie for an Epic Clown Fight that’ll slap you so hard your momma will feel it.

Brazen Action Design sets forth an impressive debut this month with Jackie Zenders’s action proof-of-concept, Providence, set in a dystopian world as we witness seeds of betrayal and family upheaval between forces of law and order, and lingering factions of chaos. Zenders directs from her own script, co-written by Veto Swarn who stars along with Jonathen Wallace, Monique Avila, Jake Moore, Daniel Masterson, Austin Durden, and Hayden Lam among the B.A.D. cast.

Last and far from least is a brand new comedy short by stuntman and filmmaker, actor Marcus Shakesheff who is never one to shy away with his love and fandom for all things comic book and DC. Here in The British Superman, he leads as mankind’s ill-gotten and unpopular savior named Neville at the center of his own documentary in which a professor puts our less-than-enthusing hero through a series of trials to prove he’s from the planet Krypton. It’s a less-action oriented affair but Shakesheff plays the role fittingly and entertains viewers from start to finish.

He’s only appeared in The Hit List a few times having done three shortfilms (two of which I have seen), and you need only to see the results for yourself apart from his exceptional work reel just above.

RUN HOME JACK: Help Fund Enligh10 Media's New Martial Arts/Parkour Crime Short

The Austin, Texas branch of independent film company Enligh10 Media is less than a week from the end of their campaign to help fund their newest action-packed short, Run Home Jack. Shortfilm director Mathew Ruybal is set to helm the project with his own script, telling of a mild-mannered introvert in his 30’s whose chance encounter with a group of men seeking to hire him for his “skills” puts him in a moral dilemma that forces him to choose between his new life, or a return to that which he once thought to have abandoned for good.

Dardrex Presents: DARREN HOLMQUIST V. SHAUN BEEHAG

Darren Holmqist tries to force Shaun Beehag into submission in their latest fight.

It’s not often that independent online filmmakers and action performers travel to other areas of the world to make short test fights for the simple fun of it. However, for online actioner Darren Holmquist, it was quite convenient a pairing when Aussie professional traceur Shaun Beehag flew to California recently on business and decided to pay Holmquist a visit.

Hence, we are offered a brand new test fight this week featuring Holmquist and Beehag, choreogrpahed much to the tune of Holmquist‘s “New Style” of evolving choreography that strays from the usual Hong Kong elements he’s incorporated in his projects over the years. The new short was also another opportunity for Beehag to help sharpen his performance level as a stuntfighter since going on hiatus early last year to establish himself as a fitness trainer and an obstacle racer.

The project is also one in a small handful the few have worked on several years ago, formulating a creative understanding they have grown to mutually share and benefit to this day. Needless to say, Beehag agrees. “Darren is really patient and understanding, which for me as someone coming off a year of no filming was great because it enabled me to pace myself and ease back into choreography again.” he says. “He would be great for beginners to work with, and for more experienced filmmakers, he’s very eager to collaborate and work together on coming up with the choreography which is a great experience.”.

Beehag also added, “The shoot was really relaxed and a lot of fun, and lots of laughs were had which eased the strain of two hours sleep and the chill of San Francisco fog. Plus, he’s got a great team behind him too. Frank Hernandez and Jeff Lunzaga were both really nice to work with.”.

Holmquist has a few more projects that the public will get to see this year, including a few that are now in post-production dating back to recent work in Redding, as well as a new stunt reel on the way two weeks from now. Meanwhile, Beehag will be more focused this year on Parkour training, matriculating himself into Brisbane’s film festival scene, film production and will hopefully attain the funds needed to build his own multifunctional freerunning and cinema stunt training academy at home.

In between all these and more, if the two can find a way to collaborate once again, Beehag assures it. “Next time I’m in America I suspect, or if he comes to visit me in Australia.” he says. “We are both looking at spending some time in Los Angeles in the future, so if that lines up right, there would be a lot of work going for us then.”.

CBR Stunts Goes Parkour In A New 'Watch Dogs' Fan Film

I’m not a part of the gaming culture so video games are a bit alien to me these days. But I do take notice when fans of certain franchises come out of the woodwork to put together some of the most amazing and inspired fan-attributed projects ever to hit the internet. One such case is Ubisoft’s new action adventure game, Watch Dogs, and independent filmmaker Devin Graham has delivered his own inspired take on the popular upcoming product with a brand new parkour-enfused shortfilm now available on his YouTube channel in the embed below.

Featuring freerunners  Chris Romrell and Robert Bennett of CBR Stunt Team with comedic actor and YouTube personality Craig Benzine, the new shortfilm was shot on location in Chicago where the actual game takes place. The cinematography is excellent and smooth, and presents a great look at some incredible parkour work done by the performers, especially when it came to the bigger stunts; No CGI or wires involved. These guys put their lives on the line for the love of their craft, and it deserves to be viewed and shared. After all, you know what they say: Sharing is caring.

Paul Walker And David Belle Take On BRICK MANSIONS In A New B-Roll Featurette

Moviegoers are just a few weeks away from the release of Camille Delamarre‘s directorial debut, Brick Mansions, a redux of the 2005 French original, Banlieue 13. And this week, we are offered just a little more insight into the production with a brand new six-minute B-roll featurette and a brand new clip to get a whiff of the action that will hit the big screens in North America on April 25.

For some, the footage may be a bittersweet offering after the death of actor and philanthropist, Paul Walker, who stars opposite David Belle reprising his role from the initial film. As it stands, the film was meant to mark a new movement for the actor as a bonafide cinematic action hero following the spectacular success of Universal’s hit franchise, The Fast And The Furious. By some notable accounts, that very commitement to the job and the willingness to meet the physical demands represented more than just a great day at the office. 

“The set was like a playground for Paul,” Belle says in a recent statement quoted at USA Today. “Sometimes, he would make me laugh just before a take when I was all serious and focused. I would have to get my wits together. There was always joy and fun with him.”

The director also stated his own observations of the late actor, who completely finished all post-production work on the film just days before he died. “It was a big triumph for Paul — he had never done a movie like this,” says Delamarre of Walker and Belle. “He pushed himself so hard here, and the results are better than we could have ever hoped for. They are incredible.”.

Catch Brick Mansions in theaters on April 25, 2014.

David Belle Makes A Run For It In A New Clip From BRICK MANSIONS

Opinions may still be up in the air on just how well Camille Delamarre‘s forthcoming directorial debut will fare in the latest remake to hit the big screen, Brick Mansions. One thing is certain, however, is that there will be plenty of freerunning action from the cast, including lead actor and premier Parkour originator, David Belle who you can now check out in a brand new clip for the film below.

The clip teases the opening spectacular sequence as Belle reprises his role as Lino (a new iteration of the former name, Leito) from the first film in 2005, Pierre Morrel’s Banlieue 13. Joining in the action is late actor Paul Walker taking the reigns as the undercover cop, Damien (formerly played by Cyril Raffaelli) who forms his reluctant partnership with Belle‘s character to infiltrate Detroit’s most dangerous walled-in ghetto to stop a notorious crimeboss bent on unleashing hell on Earth in the form of a nuclear bomb.

Brick Mansions releases theatrically on April 25!

Watch The Riveting New Trailer For BRICK MANSIONS

Actor Paul Walker‘s tragic death has been a high point of focus for a few of the studios currently responsible for completing and promoting the late actor’s last two films, one of which include the upcoming Parkour action remake, Brick Mansions. Unlike the forthcoming release of Fast And Furious 7, Walker had already completed all of the post-production work he was needed for on Brick Mansions within days before the sudden car crash on November 30, 2013 that claimed his life and that of friend and businessman Roger Rodas. And in the months since, EuropaCorp and Relativity Media made it clear that they would revamp their promotional campaign before it began so that they could promote the film in a way that would honor the actor’s memory.

Take that in mind as we now look at the latest second trailer for the film, marking Luc Besson protegè Camille Delamarre‘s directorial debut. While much of the analysis among observers so far is that it basically resembles the original 2004 Pierre Morrel helmer almost beat for beat, today’s second trailer does carry a more definitive effect as we are offered small, split-second glimpses into the depth of Walker‘s character, Damien, and the rift between him and actor RZA‘s role as the villain, Tremaine. In my view, aside from the similarities drawn between both films, this particular promo does an exceptional job at putting Walker front and center with actor and parkour impressario David Belle as the driving force of the high-speed action both actors will endure. In my opinion, whether or not you approve remakes, I think Brick Mansions is going to deliver a fine spectacle with tons of action and a good story, with a largely exceptional cast headlined by one leading man in the middle of his finest hour in the world of cinema.

Brick Mansions opens April 25. Support this film. Don’t let it tank.

SYNOPSIS:

In a dystopian Detroit, abandoned brick mansions left from better times now house only the most dangerous criminals. Unable to control the crime, the police constructed a colossal containment wall around this area to protect the rest of the city. For undercover cop Damien Collier (Paul Walker) every day is a battle against corruption. For Lino (David Belle), every day is a fight to live an honest life. Their paths never should have crossed, but when drug kingpin, Tremaine (RZA) kidnaps Lino’s girlfriend, Damien reluctantly accepts the help of the fearless ex-convict, and together they must stop a sinister plot to devastate the entire city. With stylized action featuring thrilling Parkour stunts (David Belle is the co-founder of the physical training discipline), Brick Mansions puts an entertaining twist on the action genre.
