Highland Film Group is proudly unveiling a first look at Spectre actor Christoph Waltz and Cooper Hoffman of Licorice Pizza in Old Guy, the new action comedy from director Simon West. Hoffman joined Shazam! Fury of the Gods actress Lucy Liu in casting announcements on Friday for the film which recently wrapped in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Waltz plays Danny Dolinski, an aging contract killer who still believes he’s the best at what he does. Stuck at a dead end but vying for the love of club manager Anata (Liu), Danny is thrilled when The Company pulls him back in the field, but only to train Gen Z newcomer Wihlborg (Hoffman), a prodigy assassin with an attitude. The mismatched pair is asked to eliminate top members of a competing crime syndicate and, in the process, uncover their employer’s true motive: removing the old guard in a full takeover. However, The Company […]
Christoph Waltz (No Time to Die, Big Eyes, Inglourious Basterds) is set to star in Old Guy, a new action comedy from director Simon West (The Expendables 2, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, The Mechanic). West directs from a script by Greg Johnson (The Last Son), the story of Terry Eubanks (Waltz), an aging contract killer who still believes he’s the best at what he does. Simon West’s latest stake in big scale action and spectacle has finally arrived with VOD release date for the explosive survival thriller, Skyfire. Screen Media acquired the pic back in October and has just unveiled the official trailer, with plans to release the film exclusively on-Demand from Janaury 12. A young scientist (Hannah Quinlivan) invents a cutting-edge volcanic warning system and returns to the tropical island where her mother tragically died, hoping she can prevent future deaths. The island is now home to the world’s only volcano theme park and resort, the brainchild of its reckless owner Jack (Jason Isaacs). Chaos soon erupts when the once dormant volcano starts to rumble. It’s a battle with nature to get off the island while fiery death and destruction rains down from the mountain.
Simon West’s volcanic survival thriller, Skyfire, will get a theatrical and on-demand release this December in North America through Screen Media Films, as announced by Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment Inc. on Thursday. The film released in the mainland last December to box office acclaim, billed as “China’s first large-scale disaster movie”, with a cast that lists Jason Isaacs (Hotel Mumbai), Hannah Quinlivan (Skyscraper), Xueqi Wang (Iron Man 3) and Shawn Dou (Wolf Totem). In Skyfire, chaos erupts when the once dormant volcano at the world’s only volcano theme park and resort starts to rumble. A young scientist (Quinlivan) must convince the resort owner (Isaacs) to evacuate the island before it is too late. West, best known as the blockbuster director behind Con Air, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, The Mechanic, and The Expendables 2, to name a few, directed from a script by Written by Will Wei Bu and […]
Currently while offsetting his latest entry in the Mojin franchise, fans can expect more of Simon West out of China with the kind of spectacular footage currently seen in the new Skyfire teaser. Set on a beautiful and remote island, a devastating volcanic eruption brings together geologists, resort owners, and tourists as they race against the clock to survive and save lives. Skyfire stars Hannah Quinlivan, and actors Wang Xueqi and Shawn Dou. Merdian shopped the project along with BaseFX at Cannes and is tentatively set for a 2019 release until further notice.
Director Simon West has been more than busy over in China, co-helming on one title and solo directing another – the latter, Skyfire, hailing from Meridian Entertainment and Base Media. The five year endeavor which wrapped late last year was written by Sidney King and stars Hannah Quinlivan (Skyscraper) as a young geologist who finds herself in a race against time to save her family from a volcanic island in the South China Sea on the brink of deadly eruption. The previous teaser poster was well-suited for the hype and the new one now online finally lends a look at the cast featuring actors Wang Xueqi (Bodyguards And Assassins, Helios), Shawn Dou (Urban Games, To The Fore) and Jason Isaacs (The OA, Star Trek: Discovery) among the cast. The poster also reveals a 2019 date so we shouldn’t be too far off with a proper rollout going forward. Hat tip […]
The first official artwork for The Legend Hunters has arrived, directed by Li Yi Fan and Simon West. It’s the project formerly known as Mojin X – the big giveaway being it stars Celina Jade as reported last October. Also starring are Hanyu Zhang and Jiang Wu, following suit with the on-going Mojin franchise. Story, plot and release date are all unknown, so I’ll be sure to update as soon as possible on these. Hat tip to Asian Film Strike for this find.
It was last October when word got around that Simon West (The Expendables 2, Gun Shy), wrapped his first Chinese feature film after five years of development. That project now arrives with the first piece of artwork for upcoming disaster thriller, Skyfire, produced and financed by Meridian Entertainment and Base Media. Penned by Sidney King, Skyfire takes place on a volcanic island in the South China Sea where a young geologist and her father are now in a race against time to save lives before the island blows. Actress Hannah Quinlivan (S.M.A.R.T. Chase, Skyscraper), and actors Wang Xueqi (Bodyguards And Assassins, Helios) and Shawn Dou (Urban Games, To The Fore) are among those leading the cast. A release date is still pending along with other technical details to the matter as we look toward what follows up from this point on. Peep the artwork below in the meantime and log […]
This year marks the twentieth anniversary of Con Air, a roller-coaster of an action movie starring Nicolas Cage and the debut film of director Simon West. Like fellow action maestros Michael Bay and Antione Fuqua, West worked his way through the ranks at Propaganda Films making award winning music videos and commercials. As a feature filmmaker, he’s directed everything from the surprisingly solid Tomb Raider (starring Angelina Jolie at the height of her fame) to Expendables 2 (the best film in the franchise) as well as TV shows like Human Target. Now he’s here to talk about his latest action project, Stratton. Adapted from a popular book series about an elite operative in the British SBS (Special Boat Service), this could become a new British action franchise to stand side by side with Bond. South Korean actor Gang Dong-Won (Kundo, Master, The Priests) is one of his region’s most popular actors. That said, if you were to ask me if he would be on par for a Western debut, I’d say your guess is as good as mine…or in this case, Stratton, Gun Shy and The Expendables 2 helmer Simon West’s. Per Variety’s exclusive over the weekend, Tsunami LA is the title of Gang’s American debut with international reps Hannibal Classics and Foresight Unlimited producing through a $55 million dollar budget. The film is currently in pre-production for a 2019 relese with a story telling of a massive tidal wave that hits Los Angeles. “I found the script very interesting when Hannibal first showed it to me. Also, people of my generation all have a special reminiscence about West’s ‘Con Air’,” Gang told Variety. “And it is a rare opportunity obtain a leading role […]
Since his 1997 debut film, Con Air, Simon West has been a solid B+ action filmmaker. Over the last twenty years, he’s directed ten feature films ranging from the surprisingly decent (for its day) video game adaption Tomb Raider (2001) to the Jason Statham remake of The Mechanic (2011). He’s responsible for the best film in the Expendables franchise (Expendables 2), though that’s not exactly high praise. But over the last five years, the kinds of films that West specializes in have fallen out of fashion and into the DTV realm. There are plenty of talented directors in the DTV space making solid and occassionally spectacular action films, does West have what it takes to join their ranks? John Stratton (Dominic Cooper) is the leader of an elite team of British anti-terrorists. After his team is betrayed on a mission, their token American is killed and Stratton barely survives. Now, […]
Actor Dominic Cooper’s feasibility as an action star is something I wouldn’t have suspected, as unassuming as he is. Then again, recent years have shown that filmmakers can make anyone an action star and the outcome depends on how the filmmaker in question applies the necessary methods for doing so. Some are pretty lackluster in this effort while others do manage to keep things well knit and lensed in the process and this, on top of of a tight script, good drama and pacing can certainly do a film justice. Stratton achieves this, albeit measuring about as far in its spectacle as you would presume to believe a limited theatrical and VoD run would allow. The bright side is that it largely maintains itself for worthy viewing with action fans, providing an otherwise refreshing and watchable espionage thriller from top to bottom. Taken from the published work of pennamed author […]
Following this year’s release of Saban-acquired action adventure, Salty, Momentum Pictures is following suit on January 5 with the long-awaited run of Duncan Falconer novel adaptation, Stratton. An official trailer has already begun circulating as of a few weeks ago marking the latest campaign for the new espionage thriller since opening in France and other markets previous and pending. Based on the novel series of the same name, STRATTON is directed by Simon West (The Expendables 2, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider) and stars Dominic Cooper (Captain America: The First Avenger, Need for Speed), Austin Stowell (Whiplash, Colossal), Gemma Chan (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Submarine), Thomas Kretschmann (Jungle, King Kong), Tyler Hoechlin (“Teen Wolf,” Everybody Wants Some!!), with Tom Felton (Harry Potter series) and Connie Nielsen (Wonder Woman, Gladiator) and Derek Jacobi (Murder on the Orient Express, The King’s Speech). When a high-stakes M16 mission to intercept […]
Con Air, The Expendables 2 and upcoming Stratton helmer Simon West is up for a return to the big screen for his new film, Gun Shy, which Saban Films acquired back in June. A dose of comedy to accommodate the action adventure narrative are what lie ahead this time around per its adapted screenplay from “Salty” author Mark Haskell Smith. When vacationing in Chile, an aging and pampered rock star’s (Antonio Banderas) supermodel wife is suddenly kidnapped by renegades. Unable to navigate more than ordering a sandwich from room service, now he must take to the backstreets of Santiago in this hilarious caper that is as entertaining as it is hair-raising. Rounding out the cast are Ben Cura, Mark Valley, Aisling Loftus, David Mitchell, Jeremy Swift, and Jesse Johnson from a script by Smith and co-scribe Toby Davies. The film opens in limited theaters and on VoD September 8. Check out the trailer below.
What was once slated to be a Henry Cavill action vehicle has since aligned its essentials together with AMC series Preacher star Dominic Cooper front and center for the title role of upcoming action thriller, Stratton. Vertigo will be doling out the film in the U.K. in the coming weeks with a September 1 date stamped and as such, now has its first official U.K. trailer running to help stir anticipation for the new Simon West film based on the work of pennamed author Duncan Falconer. Whilst on a mission targeting a laboratory manufacturing biochemical weapons in Iran, Stratton (Cooper), a determined and dedicated SBS operative working alongside MI5, and his US counterpart, Navy Seal Marty (Tyler Hoechlin) discover that their operation has been compromised and must escape. In the mayhem that follows, the mission goes spectacularly wrong and Marty is mortally wounded.Back at base Stratton is summoned by the […]
As lackluster as most of The Expendables 3 felt back in 2014, the film had some delightful moments worth basking in, namely the parts with actor Antonio Banderas playing an aging mercenary going through a midlife crisis. He continues to leave a presence for me long after my first viewing of him in the 90’s sequelizing the title role of El Mariachi in Desperado and I’m glad to see him sticking around. Nowadays, the star of the 2014 sci-fi thriller, Automata and co-star the 2015 rescue biopic, 33 días can be expected to appear in a few noteworthy titles in the next few years. More relevantly, you can add the new independent action comedy effort, Salty, which attached filmmaker Simon West (Con-Air, The Mechanic, The Expendables 2) successfully broke records upon meeting its crowdfunding target of £1.8 million pound sterlings via the Syndicate Room last year. via THR: Billed as […]
