We’ve got more than a month until Jon Watts’s Spider-Man: Homecoming opens in theaters and so Sony Pictures has plenty of time and opportunity to make its case. The only minor downside is that apparently Wonder Woman is the most anticipated superhero film of the summer, which is great for Warner Bros.’s still-fledgeling DC cinematic foray, and for a film that’s already rating higher than expected among early viewers.
Where the Russos’ Captain America: Civil War left us off, director Jon Watts picks up for moviegoers with actor Tom Holland in Spider-Man: Homecoming for its July 7 release. The week is lit so far with events trickling from CinemaCon and such include the goings-on from Sony in their daring bid to return us to the world of eager superhero Peter Parker in the form of well fitting Tom Holland taking in the title role.
“(It’s) the most surreal feeling ever. We’re going to get to see a kid whose trying to do his algebra homework, but also [trying to] make New York a safer place, so it’s a really fun balance between the two.” says Holland (via Movieweb). Also starring are Marisa Tomei as Aunt May with Robert Downey Jr. back once again to assert the continuity of the MCU as Tony Stark/Iron Man, and opposite Michael Keaton back and frowning as the blue-collar principal villain, Adrian Toomes/Vulture.
SYNOPSIS:
A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.
The new trailer, following that of several months ago, explores a bit more than expected and maybe even spoils one particular moment in the film. That said, it also sets up the quandry Holland’s Parker is faced with in the eyes of Stark as he does his best to micromanage all ends as the arbiter here of all things involving superheroing, which I think is fascinating after all that’s happened in the past fifteen years or more with this being Sony’s third stake in Spider-Man’s big screen prospects.
If I’m being honest, I hated covering Spider-Man so much back between 2013 and onward because of the fatigue it drew and how Sony’s prior scheduling was so ambitious right before nearly collapsing that I didn’t think this was going to be at all worth recovering from. Granted, I guess it’s fair that Sony feels it can bring Spider-Man back to the big screen in a way that freshens and aspires to be greater and cohesive, and clearly it’s well on the way to doing so after Civil War. It still feels like one Spider-Man movie too much but I admire what’s unfolding here and I might give this one a shot myself.

Sony Pictures is officially tackling properties, Silver Sable and Black Cat for a feature-film production according to THR. Christopher Yost who helped scribe the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok is now penning the script with Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal producing for a hopeful Fall start date.
The news comes more than two-and-a-half years since Sony Pictures first announced the effort to bring a female-centric Spider Man title about. A number of things may have factored into why this probably didn’t take shape almost sooner, notably Sony and Marvel ultimately forging a partnership to reboot Spider-Man for a welcome entry into the MCU which now sees actor Tom Holland in the forthcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Silver Sable (a.k.a. Silver Sablinova) was launched at Marvel in 1985, created by Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz. Skilled in weapons, hand-to-hand combat and strategy, she leads the Wild Pack, a group of mercenaries whose m.o. is to hunt down international war crimimals, while her loyalty to Spider-Man in the comics is known to be fleeting.
Sable is a character lesser known in the comics compared to Black Cat, launched in 1971 by Keith Pollard and Marv Wolfman and who shares a deeper, complicated romantic history with the popular wall-crawling hero from Queens. Black Cat (a.k.a. Felicia Hardy) was the daughter of a world-renowned cat burglar and became her alter-ego after surviving a traumatic experience, ultimately forging her prowess in fighting and acrobatics.
Black Cat almost appeared in director Sam Raimi’s initial live-action trilogy before briefly appearing in name in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in 2014 before Sony pulled its future immediate plans at the time.
Sony has also begun advancing efforts for a Venom feature film franchise as of last week. Spider-Man: Homecoming opens on July 7.
I grew pretty fatigued in the months before and after Sony’s 2014 attempt at a summer sequel with Marvel wall crawler, Spider-Man, and before I go any further, I still am, sort of. All of the tedious energy it takes to cover comic book movies – from micro updates on images to casting announcements and confirmations is why I largely don’t cover comic book movies as much as I’d like to, and especially with all of the developments there were at the time for actor Andrew Garfield’s succession into battling the Sinister Six along with the studio’s further push for a possible female Spider-man project in the works.
Thus, and in the spirit of togetherness following last year’s post Sony e-mail hacking updates, we’ve mostly scratched all of that for the time being and largely in part due to the spotlight now on actor Tom Holland who has been more than enthusiastic on social about his place in the current Marvel universe as the friendly neighborhood web-flinger prior to his debut in this year’s Captain America: Civil War. He proved himself then, though now as a solo act (with the exception of Robert Downey Jr. further setting the table as billionaire Avenger Tony Stark a.k.a. Iron Man), Holland now takes the stage in director Jon Watt’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, as our hero tries to balance out life as a high school student in Queens, New York City, and as a superhero in the making opposite. Actor Michael Keaton trades in the wings of Batman and Birdman for that of supervillain, Vulture, among the film’s other antagonists.
The beautiful Marissa Tomei also returns as Aunt May from Civil War, joining a cast that rounds out with Donald Glover, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Tyne Daly and Bokeem Woodbine. Spider-Man: Homecoming, which premiered its first official trailer late Thursday evening on Jimmy Kimmel’s late night show on ABC is online ahead of its July 7 release.
