Well Go USA’s press pack for director Cheng Er’s latest film, Hidden Blade, partly states that he’s best known for keeping his audiences guessing. That he does, this time with a story set in the early 1940s with events chronicled before, and afterward, amid the Communist party’s campaign as it’s set against the backdrop of the invasion of imperial Japanese forces. The film weaves in its elements and characters from all angles, flashing forward in its efforts to set things in motion for the audience to begin following our main characters and learn more about them. That process eventually begins to materialize a little more about a half-hour into the film where we’ve then come to acquaint ourselves with the likes of He (Tony Leung Chiu-Wai), Ye (Wang Yibo), the sinister Captain Wang (Eric Wang), Tang (Da Peng) and Watanabe (Hiroyuki Mori), all members of a Japanese spy agency operating […]
The past year has been a little bit interesting with a few teasers making the rounds for director Cheng Er’s new World War II spy thriller, Anonymous. Not much happens in either of those teasers, save for offering little pieces here and there of characterization to go by, along with the casting of celebrated actor Tony Leung Chiu-wai to boost the film’s wider marketability. That all changes just a little more for the better now with a brand new teaser making the rounds, and footage suited to entice fans of espionage and spy warfare. That means quite a bit of hallway footage, dudes in suits, lots of walking, and more walking, all peppered in the latter half with some gunplay to whet the appetite. Fun! The logline via Letterboxd: On December 7, 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. The following day, the Wang False Government followed Japan’s declaration of war against […]
Raiders trilogy and The Grandmaster star Tony Leung Chiu-Wai will star along with Extraordinary Mission actor Yihong Duan in Fox Hunt, billed as a ripped-from-the-headlines police action thriller being produced by the state-backed Shanghai Film Group. Variety‘s Patrick Frater reports that Fox Hunt is based on the real-life operation that launched in Summer 2014 as a global anti-corruption initiative steered by China’s Ministry of Public Security. The director’s position awaits filling while cameras will reportedly roll in France and China. …The operation seeks to find and repatriate Chinese people who have fled abroad to avoid accusations of corruption. The film is expected to show cross-border criminal proceedings and the use of Interpol’s so-called Red Notices… Frater also elucidates an interesting tidbit about the film’s existence in the wake of recent protests in Hong Kong over a recently-suspended government bill that would have allowed fugitives to be handed over to authorities […]

Apart from its paltry reception in the U.S., Raman Hui’s Monster Hunt bolstered China’s box office with record numbers and was a major hit in the region. Its critical approval also stands firm as a fairly exciting and enthusing endeavor from a director boldly stepping up at the helm following a notable career on several animated projects in the U.S.. As of this Chinese New Year now, fans of the first film will finally get to set foot back into the world Hui helped build, setting the stage for Monster Hunt 2. Storied by Peter Cirlella and scripted once more by Alan Yuen, the sequel further chronicles the adventures of a baby monster destined to become king and prevent a civil war with the help of human allies. Recent campaigning for the film saw more gags than not with some behind-the-scenes footage to boot. This time, we have some actual […]
