Ghost stories aren’t for everyone, but it’s understandable how keen some folks are toward tales of the supernatural like Loi Bao director Victor Vu’s latest, The Immortal. Vu combines action and otherworldly horror to produce an epic, dual-headed ghost story that thrives on the timeless, cyclic nature of vengeance and death. Such is what happens as An (Dinh Ngoc Diep) finds herself in a bizzare situation mired in tragedy; Dreams and apparitions emerge in her wake as her daughter is suddenly dying of brain cancer. A certain birthmark on her back lends to the mystery that now drives her joruney to a remote area near a river – a cave where she discovers a near century-old journal that offsets the crux of Vu’s The Immortal. The journal tells of Hung (Quach Ngoc Ngoan) and Lien (Jun Vu) who dream of a simple family life together until his conniving stepbrother, Khang […]
Director Victor Vu has had a great run the past few years since buzzing with superhero thriller, Loi Bao, and subsequently filming his new fantasy drama epic, The Immortal. Reuniting with Loi Bao actor Quach Ngoc Ngoan for a starring capacity, the film is currently making the rounds in Vietnamese cinemas and taking the top spot at the box office and we now have an exclusive clip. The film’s action producer, Jason Ninh Cao, collaborated with action director Vincent Wang (Dracula Untold, The Great Wall) in designing the spectacle right down to the last squib. You can also take a gander at that effort in a recently-released five-minute behind-the-scenes look at the film which showcases speaking segments from Wang, Vu and other crew. Ngoan stars from a script by Vu and co-writer Kay Nguyen which sees An, a woman stumble upon a cave with mysterious secrets that unveil the tumultuous […]
With the foothold superhero movies have gained throughout the spectrum of cinema, the dynamics fluctuate greatly with Hollywood being the most noticeable blip. Other territories sprout with more regional appeal whereas Victor Vu’s latest, Loi Bao, has the fruit of momentum on its heels for greater profusion. Following screenings at Fantasia in Canada and East Winds in the U.K. in the past year, Vu’s new film still stands firm in today’s film climate. Its circulation outside of Vietnam sort of deems it a worthwhile talk topic with respect to Asian representation in cinema, and its attribution to the superhero genre certainly makes it ripe for the occasion. Its lead star, Cuong Seven, has all but proven his apt, physical capability thusfar as the villain in Cuong Ngo’s 2016 thriller, Tracer. Switching into protagonist for the duration of Vu’s new crimefighting foray, Seven pulls his weight firmly in carrying a story […]
Director Victor Vu is now two-for-two in recent memory. Having made a dent in the festival scene with superhero action sci-fi, Loi Bao, his latest, The Immortal, now aims higher in its cinematic scope and visual volume with Loi Bao actor Quach Ngoc Ngoan front and center. Actress Dinh Ngoc Diep inaugurates the tale telling as a woman who journeys to a mysterious cave containing the terrifying secrets of Hung, a man who has lived for three centuries. What unfolds is an epic narrative that explores Hung’s life – one filled with ambition, vengeance and dark magic. The newest official trailer is online and surely goes out of its way to provide some visual allure for its narrative near the start. Vu’s noted alliance also has him joined by Loi Bao cohorts, action director Vincent Wang and action producer Jason Ninh Cao for the film’s October 12 release.
Fantasia will be the next festival highlight for Vietnamese director Victor Vu’s recent hit, Loi Bao starring Cuong Seven in July. In the meantime, the wait now settles through October for the release of Vu’s The Immortal which now has a first trailer to show for its efforts reuniting Vu with core Loi Bao crew members, action director Vincent Wang and action producer Jason Ninh Cao. Thankfully you can largely divulge as much of the plot as you wish from the subtitles which gives this an impression as something of a supernatural period epic with some shots hinting at an early 20th century setting. Loi Bao antagonist, actor Quach Ngọc Quan takes the mantle in the lead role this time around joining the aforementioned Seven actress Dinh Ngọc Diep and fellow Lôi Bao co-star Vũ Tuấn Việt. Check out the trailer below!
One project I’m looking forward to is director Victor Vu’s latest foray with The Immortal, reteaming him with fellow cohorts Jason Ninh Cao and action director Vincent Tran (Doctor Strange) since collaborating for last year sci-fi action thriller Loi Bao. Both are actually on my own menu as we speak with the latter already having had its regional rollout in Vietnam and with any luck the film won’t be too far off from some wholly welcome acquisition news in due time. At any rate though, the project now stands poised for a little more profusion with an upcoming festival premiere at this year’s sixth edition of the East Winds Film Festival, now announcing Loi Bao as event’s Opening Gala and with Vu serving as one of this year’s special guests. Vu’s 2015 novel adaptation, Yellow Flowers On The Green Grass and 2014 thriller, Vengeful Heart, are also being slated for […]
Among all the sorts of things a film fan could hope for, pushing the envelope certainly serves well as a priority and always tantamount for any director working on an action film. One as ambitious as Victor Vu’s latest sci-fi thriller, Loi Bao, certainly has its merits in that aspect given what we’ve seen in the stunts and fightwork from action director Vincent Wang and it’s certainly feasible to note actor Cuong Seven thusfar as a worthy lead. The film opens on December 22 and not only has new key art, but a final trailer as well with subtitles that delve further into the narrative; Seven, a versatile performance artist following his previous work on Cuong Ngo’s Tracer, stars as a dying man who undergoes a life-saving head transplant onto a new body only to bear witness to the residual after-affects of its mysterious owner: Near boundless superhuman skills and […]
Film fans in Vietnam have a few more months until the release of director Victor Vu’s new action thriller, Loi Bao. For this, we have some brand new poster art with its December 22 date stamped accordingly and all the essentials to help keep the hype going. The film itself sees Truy Sat co-star, actor Cuong Seven back leading a new superheroic tale of a man whose verge from a cancerous death brings him to the forefront of a modern medical procedure. It’s one that invites something of an entirely new body and a number of gifts like superior strength and fighting prowess, as well as a peculiar set of memories. That’s all I really know about the plot since everything else I can find is in Vietnamese but we have a story that reads a little familiar to a few recent titles. It’s still exciting and sheds a much-needed […]
Aside from any hint of distribution overseas as of yet, we have what we currently need with news on what’s coming for director Victor Vu’s superhero actioner, Lôi Bao, starring Cuong Seven. That one has a few trailers in its wake ahead of its December release while we can now confirm Vu’s latest supernatural action thriller, Nguoi Bat Tu (The Immortal), which just wrapped principal photography in Quan Binh (once home to the set of Kong: Skull Island) as well as in the provinces of Hà Nam and Bien Hoa Dong Nai. There’s no logline or any story information as of yet while we have confirmed a March 2018 release. We have also ascertained further cast and crew information which has Vu reuniting with several cast and crew from Lôi Bao, joining Seven once more with that film’s starring villain, actor Quach Ngọc Quan, who now serves as the lead. […]
With plenty of reason to believe 2017 won’t be the last we hear from Blood Letter helmer Victor Vu, the Vietnamese-American filmmaker’s latest, Loi Bao, already looks quite the contender in Asian action cinema with none other than actor Cuong Seven in the lead role. The film is poised for an October release moved a month from earlier reports of a September date, and now has an official trailer to show for its efforts. That being said, there aren’t any plot specifics being made publically available (at least none that I can find in English yet), although the English subtitles do allow a bit more for absorption. This, plus a story seeming of a man back from the verge of death who takes on a new identity and is suddently imbued with superb fighting and athletic skills and the ability to lift a car with his bare hands… I’m pretty […]
It was earlier this week that the first official teaser trailer for Blood Letter helmer Victor Vu’s new action movie, Loi Bao, released online, and much to the delight of action fans instinctive enough to catch on. Truy Sat co-star Cuong Seven makes his starring role here and for a teaser that has already begun catching on, bolstered by some of the big stuntwork highlight throughout while we await further details on the project. In the meantime, with Loi Bao expected to wrap filming in less than a week, Film Combat Syndicate can exclusively report that Vu’s next project, tentatively untitled, has already been confirmed. As it stands, any and all film details are being kept heavily under the table until further notice, otherwise while reteaming Vu with action director Vincent Wang (The Great Wall, Marvel’s Doctor Strange) and action producer Jason Ninh Cao (Lua Phat, Iron Monk). Stunt rehearsals […]
Last we checked in with actor Cuong Seven, he was getting his kicks opposite actress Troung Ngoc Anh in Cuong Ngo’s action crime thriller, Truy Sat. Having made the case then, the actor and seemingly prominent rising action talent has since been seen on set with Blood Letter helmer Victor Vu and action producer Jason Ninh Cao (Iron Monk) for the new action thriller, Loi Bao, which boasts some big stunt sequences at great heights in the first teaser now rumbling online. The plot details are nil and underwraps but the teaser does offer several things here: English subtitles, a September release, and some upworthy production design to accomodate. Seven himself reportedly performed about 90% of the high-flying stunts and action coordinated by Vincent Wang who directed sequences for Zhang Yimou’s The Great Wall and assisted that effort on Marvel’s Doctor Strange as well among others. Actor Quach Ngoc Quan stars […]
Releasing on February 25, 2014 courtesy of Epic Pictures Group is the long awaited fantasy martial arts swordplay epic, Sword Of The Assassin from writer and director Victor Vu. Known in its native Vietnam as Thiên Mệnh Anh Hùng (later known as Blood Letter), the film is recorded as one of the most expensive films done in Vietnamese film history. The film did hit a few snags during its film festival run in the last couple of years since its completion and release, but genre fans in North America will finally get to see another gem from the Vietnamese action industry on DVD and Blu-Ray next year. Sword Of The Assassin stars Huynh Dong, Midu, Van Trang, Khuong Ngoc, Van Anh, Minh Thuan and Jaivee Mai The Hiep, and is produced by Phuong Nam Films and Saga films, in association with BHD, the same company that delivered the biggest […]
